BAILEY B.S., Austin Peay State University, 2006 M.A., Austin Peay State University, 2008 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2015 Abstract The thriving areas of development around the cities of Franklin and Nashville in Tennessee bear little evidence of the large battles that took place there during November and December, 1864. Pointing to modern development to explain the failed preservation of those battlefields, however, radically oversimplifies how those battlefields became relatively obscure. Instead, the major factor contributing to the lack of preservation of the Franklin and Nashville battlefields was a fractured collective memory of the two events; there was no unified narrative of the battles. For an extended period after the war, there was little effort to remember the Tennessee Campaign. Local citizens and veterans of the battles simply wanted to forget the horrific battles that haunted their memories. Furthermore, the United States government was not interested in saving the battlefields at Franklin and Nashville. Federal authorities, including the War Department and Congress, had grown tired of funding battlefields as national parks and could not be convinced that the two battlefields were worthy of preservation. Moreover, Southerners and Northerners remembered Franklin and Nashville in different ways, and historians mainly stressed Eastern Theater battles, failing to assign much significance to Franklin and Nashville. Throughout the 20th century, infrastructure development encroached on the battlefields and they continued to fade from public memory.

Oct. 9, 2016 – Historic Nashville, Inc. (HNI) announced its 2016 Nashville Nine, a list of the city’s most endangered historic places, at a press conference held today at the Union Station Hotel in downtown Nashville. Award winning recording artist and songwriter Butch Walker joined HNI representatives to reveal the Nashville Nine properties and to underscore how vital preservation is in maintaining Nashville’s unique character. Walker, who now calls the Nashville area home, is a local recording artist, songwriter, and record producer, as well as a passionate preservationist. Best known for his work in punk, pop rock, and hard rock genres, Walker operates a music recording studio on Music Row. In recent years, Walker and his band, the Black Widows, have toured with rock bands such as Train and opened for Pink. The 2016 Nashville Nine was nominated by members of the community and represents nine historic properties threatened by demolition, neglect, or development. These properties will be the focus of Historic Nashville’s advocacy and outreach throughout the coming year. Historic Nashville works to promote and advocate for the recognition of historic places and the impact they have on the culture, commerce and creativity of the city. Over the years, Historic Nashville has successfully assisted in the preservation of numerous landmarks such as the Ryman Auditorium, Union Station, and the Hermitage Hotel.

Beasley III Principal Investigator January 2018 ABSTRACT Under contract with Metro Parks & Recreation, Nashville., Tennessee Valley Archaeological Research (TVAR) conducted historical background research and a ground penetrating radar (GPR) assessment of Greer Stadium in anticipation of potential development of the project area. Limited subsurface testing of the targeted areas was also conducted as a means to ground-truth the GPR data. The purpose of the investigation was to provide Metro Parks & Recreation with an assessment of the site in regard to previous disturbances and a recommendation about the potential preservation of archaeological remains in the project area. Investigations resulted in the identification of stratified archaeological deposits and intact cultural features, which likely contain human remains associated with the “contraband camps” that were part of the building of Fort Negley, a Civil War-era fortification designated as archaeological site 40DV189.The GPR survey, coupled with subsurface testing, also revealed that significant portions of the project area have been subjected to extensive land alteration and leveling. The survey indicates that the southwestern portion of the project area includes intact deposits that potentially include human remains.

But as the A's right-hander reflected on a 4-3 defeat to the Chicago White Sox, he wasn't kicking himself over any one pitch. Cahill instead pinpointed his error on Omar Vizquel's seventh-inning bunt with Alex Rios on second base, when the pitcher airmailed a throw down the right-field line that allowed Rios to score. That aided a two-run rally that gave the Sox a 4-1 lead, which was crucial as the A's answered back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh but got no closer. "I threw the ball away, and it kind of made the difference in the game," said Cahill (6-1), who was trying to become the first A's starter since Dave Stewart in 1988 to win his first seven decisions. The defeat featured some traits of previous A's losses, including a lack of timely hits, as Oakland stranded 10 base runners. Josh Willingham, who struck out four times, grounded into a game-ending fielder's choice with the tying run at third base in the ninth to cap his 0-for-5 day. But the A's have another less-scrutinized problem to iron out: The defensive mistakes by their pitchers are piling up and proving costly. Cahill's bad throw was the 10th error by an Oakland pitcher this season.

    HISTORY NASHVILLE BASEBALL HISTORY The 2019 season signifies the 42nd season for the Nashville Sounds. It’s the 22nd season as a member of the 16- team Pacific Coast League, and the first as the Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers. Despite the 42nd season as the Nashville Sounds, baseball’s roots in Nashville go back to the 19th Century. In fact, baseball has been played in Middle Tennessee since at least 1860, when the Republican Banner newspaper published a July 25th report on the game’s popularity the previous fall. During the Civil War, Union soldiers temporarily based here helped spread the game in the local community. Home field was a place known as the Sulphur Springs Bottom, a half-mile north of today’s state capitol. When the original Southern League was organized in 1885, Nashville was a charter city and games were played at Nashville’s Athletic Park, as the Sulphur Springs Bottom location came to be known. The city fielded several entries in the league over the next ten years -- the Americans (1885-86), the Blues (1887), the Tigers (1893-94), and the Seraphs (1895) -- but was unable to claim a pennant. When the Southern Association was formed in 1901, Athletic Park – which was later given the name Sulphur Dell by famed sportswriter Grantland Rice -- became the permanent home to the Nashville Volun- teers (or Vols, for short), who played there for the next 61 years. Under the guidance of manager Newt Fisher, the Nashville club won the SA’s first two pennants. The team, which was not known as the Vols until a “name the team” contest conducted prior to the 1908 season, continued to build a solid, loyal fan base.
