October 9 to 18, 2018 CROSSROADS OF CIVILIZATIONS October 9 to 18, 2018 On this circumnavigation of Sicily aboard our spanking-new luxury yacht, we’ll have the chance to observe the legacy of more than 3,000 years of diverse cultural impact on the island that has included wave after wave of new peoples, new ideas and new artistic techniques over the millennia, leaving in their wake grand temples, great cities, captivating villages and extraordinary works of art. We’ll visit ancient Greek temples and theaters at Segesta, Taormina and Syracuse, and view Roman and Byzantine artwork. Traveling with classics professor Marsh McCall, discover Agrigento’s Greek temples, and Monreale and Palermo’s strong Norman influences. Our voyage begins and ends in Malta, yet another cultural crossroad, where we’ll view prehistoric temples on the island of Gozo as well as Valletta’s impressive monuments. BRETT S. • BEGINNINGS Ad 1–325 SUMMARY Christianity Rapidly Spread Beyond Its Original Geographical Region of Roman-Occupied Palestine Into the Entire Mediterranean Area
PART 1 BEGINNINGS AD 1–325 SUMMARY Christianity rapidly spread beyond its original geographical region of Roman-occupied Palestine into the entire Mediterranean area. Something of this process of expansion is described in the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament. It is clear that a Christian presence was already established in Rome itself within fifteen years of the resurrection of Christ. The imperial trade routes made possible the rapid traffic of ideas, as much as merchandise. Three centers of the Christian church rapidly emerged in the eastern Mediterranean region. The church became a significant presence in its own original heartlands, with Jerusalem emerging as a leading center of thought and activity. Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey) was already an important area of Christian expansion, as can be seen from the destinations of some of the apostle Paul’s letters, and the references to the ‘seven churches of Asia’ in the book of Revelation. The process of expansion in this region continued, with the great imperial city of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) becoming a particularly influential center of mission and political consolidation. Yet further growth took place to the south, with the important Egyptian city of Alexandria emerging as a stronghold of Christian faith. With this expansion, new debates opened up. While the New Testament deals with the issue of the relationship of Christianity and Judaism, the expansion of Christianity into Greek-speaking regions led to the exploration of the way in which Christianity related to Greek philosophy. Many Christian writers sought to demonstrate, for example, that Christianity brought to fulfilment the great themes of the philosophy of Plato.

Click here for table of contents Click here to search MONITORING THE STRUCTURES OF THE ANCIENT TEMPLE OF ATHENA INCORPORATED INTO THE CATHEDRAL OF SYRACUSE A. CARPINTERI, G. LACIDOGNA, A. MANUELLO Department of Structural and Geotechnical Engineering Politecnico di Torino Torino, Italy L. BINDA Department of Structural Engineering Politecnico di Milano Milano, Italy SUMMARY Some of the most significant architectural works are monumental masonry constructions, in stone or bricks. Among these, the Cathedral of Syracuse can be viewed as a fundamental element in the history and the cultural heritage of Europe. For the preservation of these monuments it is necessary to assess their durability by taking into account cumulative damage and cracking conditions in the structures, and the evolution of time-dependent phenomena such as creep. The adoption of the most advanced and innovative monitoring techniques is taking on ever greater importance in the analysis of this problem. The paper describes the methods used by the authors to determine the conditions of the materials and crack patterns in the structures of the Cathedral. INTRODUCTION In recent years, the authors have been working on the development of a method for the assessment of materials and structures based on the spontaneous release of pressure waves originated by the evolution of damage. This monitoring technique, referred to as Acoustic Emission (AE), is non invasive and non destructive and therefore is ideally suited for the control of historic and monumental structures in seismic areas (Carpinteri and Lacidogna 2006a, 2006b, 2007). With this technique, if it is not known, the initial position of the damage can be determined with the aid of a multiplicity of sensors and through triangulation (Carpinteri et al.
