Januar 2019 Szene aus dem Film “Feng Shui” © Star Cinema Philippinen: Die Geister in den Horrorfilmen aus Südostasien sind nicht in erster Linie literarischen Metaphern nachempfunden, wie in vielen westlichen Verfilmungen. Sie sind vielmehr Teil einer Mythologie, die von vielen Menschen in der Region immer noch als selbstverständlich angesehen wird. Zugleich spiegelt das Genre die gesellschaftliche Realität und das, was in dieser lieber ungesagt bleibt. Nach meinem Umzug von Deutschland nach Manila im Jahr 2004 war ich begierig darauf, die Filmkultur eines Landes kennenzulernen, von dem ich zu diesem Zeitpunkt so gut wie nichts wusste. In den ersten Monaten nach meinem Umzug sah ich fast jeden philippinischen Film, der in die Kinos kam, obwohl ich kein Wort Tagalog verstand. Und durch puren Zufall war der erste Film, den ich gesehen habe, Chito S. Roño´s Horrorfilm “Feng Shui” (2004). Ich wusste nichts über den Film, aber ich wurde mit einem unvergesslichen Kinoerlebnis belohnt. Während Furcht erregender Szenen bedeckten die Leute ihre Augen mit den Händen, sprangen von ihren Sitzen, schrieen, um Hauptdarstellerin Kris Aquino vor der Weißen Dame zu warnen, die vor ihrem Fenster schwebte. Jeder der vielen Morde im Film verursachte einen kollektiven Aufschrei, der aus einer gemeinsamen Kehle zu kommen schien. Der Filmhistoriker Tom Gunning hat den Begriff “Ästhetik der Überraschung” (aesthetics of astonishment) für diese Art des Filmerlebnisses geprägt: die naive, unmittelbare Reaktion eines Publikums, das sich die Fähigkeit bewahrt hat, das Geschehen auf der Leinwand als real zu akzeptieren und entsprechend darauf einzusteigen.

Campos / Ghostly Allegories 611 GHOSTLY ALLEGORIES: HAUNTING AS CONSTITUTION OF PHILIPPINE (TRANS) NATIONAL (CINEMA) HISTORY Patrick Campos University of the Philippines Film Institute [email protected] Abstract By reading through the con–texts of Yam Laranas’s The Echo (2008) and Kelvin Tong’s The Maid (2005), the essay considers three Filipino genres that ironically gathered momentum at the time of the Philippine film industry’s crisis and decline in the 1990s up to the 2000s – the historical drama, the OFW (overseas Filipino worker) film, and horror. In the process, the essay constitutes an alternative map of Philippine cinema premised on inter-national transactions across states and film industries, on the one hand, and on the nodal and spectral bodies of Filipinas that network these states and industries, on the other hand. Dwelling on multiform hauntings, it ultimately focuses on how nations/cinemas – through (de)localized genres – are constituted and called into account by specters of (cinema) histories. Kris Aquino and the/as a Philippine Horror Genre Louie Jon A. Sanchez Ana Felisa E. Lorenzo & John Andrew Del Prado (Translators) This paper discusses Kris Aquino as text vis-à-vis as a unique horror genre, within the context of her title as the “Philippine Box Office Horror Queen.” While foregrounding comprehensive arguments about Aquino’s textuality, the essay also reveals her cinematic history, which has crowned Aquino as the queen of the genre, which the author calls, pelikula ng lagim [translation]. This cinematic history is used as a narrative guide in constructing an in-depth scrutiny on the concepts of genre, lagim, and the pelikula ng lagim. The author strategically plays with these concepts, thus heightening their meaning, while revealing the rich, covert discourse of Aquino as a genre that has launched itself as “a culture of kasarian” [literally, gender, but by way of a Filipino root word, sari, variety, or more appropriately, polysemy], highlighted in the two franchise Feng Shui movies (Roño, 2004, 2014), where she played the heroine.
