Cari Sindaci,

Dear Mayors,
Our cities play a leading role in building the future of humanity. We have the responsibility of governing communities of citizens and we are aware of the big challenges we must face regarding issues like culture, ethics and sustainability. This awareness is the reason for the commitment and the enthusiasm I experience every day and that I clearly heard from you during the UCLG World Council which we had the honour to host in Florence last December.
In the footsteps of a great mayor like Giorgio La Pira, our objective was to share ideas with the representatives of cities around the world by entertaining debates about international governance and sustainability. Today, more than ever, we must widen the perspective of local communities to include an international dimension so as to better administrate at the local city level.
As we all know firsthand, the administration of a city imposes concrete and precise choices every day; I believe it also requires an effort to formulate a long- term vision and a daily commitment to act upon a general plan focusing on sustainability, quality of life, and openness to the world if we are to make our cities more attractive and liveable.
It is for this reason that your presence was a great opportunity for Florence and, I believe, for all of us. We experienced something of the highest value. That is why I would like to thank each and every one of you for your participation. I look forward to beginning our work together.
Together we can paint the future.
Yours sincerely,
Matteo Renzi
