My white friends had intact families, mothers, grandparents, etc. Some of my black friends did too. But others had no father at home or had an “uncle” living with them. A few of my Irish friends in the projects had undefined “uncles” too. Project life was always tough but with strong male figures around, things really weren’t as bad as it would become in later years. We were tough, street smart and mostly stayed away from trouble unless it was forced upon us. I keep reading lately how elected officials, members of the community and members of the religious community are all asking for answers. More so they say they are seeking the root causes of all the violence that has chronically eaten away at neighborhoods in high crime areas like Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan.
