1 Introduction

As the armorial of the army collected in 1297 by Philippe IV ‘le Bel’ roi de France for the invasion of Flanders is already described and commented in two parts by Max Prinet (1934) and Paul Adam (1959) and in part reissued by Gerard Brault (1973) and on the web by Brian Timms (c.2004), why publish it anew ? The aim is fourfold: to present the armorial, with comments in English, as it might have looked when first blazoned, secondly to present two hundred of the most important members of the french warrior class active in the middle of the reign, thirdly to compensate for the difficulty in obtaining the editions and manuscripts, and lastly to update the references and provide an ordinary of its arms. Most of the information is already available and discussed in the papers by Adam and by Prinet, and readers with knowledge of french might want to consult the original papers for their discussion of the evidence and for details left out here. Some supplementary information is available in either Brault RAE or Boos LBR and has not been repeated here.

Five manuscripts are known, three medieval and two late copies. The lost original, possibly collated by a herald in the service of Robert (II) C.Artois [7], is assumed to have been blazoned: a) present owner unknown, painted and blazoned, as an annex to a treatise 'Enseignements notables servans aux rois d'armes, héraults et poursuivants' by Jeannet Fauquet (fl.1495-1506), herald to Emperor Maximilian and Philippe duc de Bourgogne, once owned by Dr. Höfflinger of Wien and with CPF/b-c-d used by Adam-Even. b) Lille, Bibl.Municipale, ms.429 :165r-188r (anc.506), 15th century, painted, probably made by a herald at the court of the dukes of Bourgogne, some blanks were maladroitly identified; c) Bruxelles, KBR, ms. Goethals 673:46-50, 15th century, blazoned in a hasty hand, dated 1218 in arabic numerals in the somewhat different introduction, french language, nearly all legends and a few blazons are missing, many abbreviations, a few explanatory shields and notes in the margin or in the text; d) Besancon, Bibl.Municipale, ms.Chifflet 186:145r-154r, 17th century, blazoned, made by Jules Chifflet (1615-1676), used by Prinet and Brault; e) Paris, BnF, ms.fr.n.acq.6889:259r-, painted, a copy of CPF/b;

Strictly speaking this is a tentative reconstruction as only the KBR manuscript has been reviewed, but a concordance with the previous editions is appended. The blazons included in the present legends are taken from Prinet, Adam or Brault. The items are merged according to Paul Adam with a head of 17 items, starting with the king of France, an insert of 3 members of the Dreux family [22- 24], and a tail of 35 items. Two items were overlooked by Prinet [83, 127]. A number of presumed doubles are left as in the previous editions and the manuscripts.

Armorial references has been kept to a minimum of contemporary items, and if none were available a few later, but major, armorials have been used. For a full set of armorial references, see Clemmensen OM. The items in Herald’s Roll FitzWilliam version (FW) were copied from Tournoi de Compiègne (TCO) by the collator of FW.

2 The politics of Flanders

At the turn of the 13th century Flanders was an important economic and political entity. Its economic importance was based on the large cloth manufacturing industry in the several large towns and their trade links with the rest of Europe, not least the wool trade with England.

The factors determining the politics and size of Flanders were several, and easily exploited. Most of Flanders was part of the kingdom of France and its count a vassal of the king. But the parts east of the Schelde / Escaut, i.e. Aalst, Dendermonde and Waas, were part of the Holy Roman Empire, and linguistically it was also split between french and speakers. As a vassal of the king of France the count was subject to the judicial processes of the Parlement de Paris, but like his neighbours and occasional enemies, Brabant, Hainaut and Holland, he acted in many matters as a sovereign. Internally there were opposition to the count from the wealthy burgher-merchants of the towns and they in turn were often opposed by the poorer town dwellers and from time to time the landed nobility were opposing either.

The size of Flanders fluctuated with time. Around 1100 it comprised not only the core castellanies of Brugge / , / Gand, Courtrai / Kortrijk, Ypres / Yeper, Furnes / Veurne, Cassel, and Bergues / Bergen, and the imperial parts, but also the country of Arras with the counties of Boulogne, Guines, St.Pol and Hesdin and the castellanies of St.Omer, Aire, Bailleul, Bourbourg, Lille, Arras, Douai and Bapaume. By 1300 most of Artois was relinquished to France, but still coveted as the french king coveted the rest of Artois. And he not only coveted the remaining castellanies (mainly Lille), but wanted to exersize his sovereignty over Flanders. The french kings had steadily expanded their influence and after the annexation of Toulouse the king had only four major vassals to worry about. The duc d’Aquitaine al. king of England was the major problem, but the duc de Bretagne was also a nearly independent vassal and there was, in the eyes of the king, no need for Flanders to emulate the previous two. The duc de Bourgogne was less of a problem being loyal to the crown. The county of Bourgogne al. Franche-Comté was an imperial fief, though usually aligned with the french crown.

The last male count of the maison d’Alsace was Baudouin IX ‘ of Constantinople (d.1206) and from then to 1278 Flanders was ruled by his daughters and their husbands. The present count, Gui de Dampierre (r.1278-1305), son of Margaret of Flanders (Alsace) and Guillaume de Dampierre, had serious problems with the burghers of the flemish towns, who ultimately brought their grievances to the Parlement de Paris, who summoned the count. Gui refused to obey and sought assistance from Edward I king of England, who at the time had Aquitaine invaded by the french on a similar charge of defiance.

The grandfather of the present french king, Philippe IV ‘le Bel’ (b.1268, r.1285-1314), was Louis IX ‘le Sacre’ (d.1270) noted for his crusades and foreign interventions. But Philippe had fought a rather catastophal campaign in Aragon at his accession and tried for his reign to use overt force as little as possible and never outside France. But in order to assert his authority the french king ordered an army to meet at Compiègne on June 2nd 1297 under his personal command, having with him, his son Louis ‘le Hutin’ (later Louis §, r.1314-1316) and his young brother Charles C.Valois (1270-1325). This army was shortly reinforced by Jan (I) C.Hainaut on June 23rd, crossed the border to Flanders on August 1st, and besieged Lille, and fouraging force under the command of Robert C.Artois fought the flemings on the plain of Bulscamp outside Furnes / Veurne on August 20th. Lille capitulated on August 25th. An armistice was signed on October 9th.

3

The result of the campaign was that Gui de Dampierre was deposed and imprisoned, and Jacques de Châtillon de St.Pol [9] was appointed royal governor of Flanders. But the wealthy and therefore powerful flemish merchants resented the occupation. Recognizing the unrest the governor and the royal concellor Pierre Flote took the french army to Brügge in May 1302. As most of the rebellious fraction had fled the city and the remaining refused to negotiate, the french harassed the town. But at sunrise on May 18th the brugeois attacked, killed many and forced the french to retreat to Courtrai and Lille, from which they summoned reinforcements.

The french reinforcements commanded by Robert C.Artois [7] reached Courtrai on June 26th and on July 11th the french mounted knights met the flemish municipal infantry and mounted nobles outside Courtrai. This ‘Battle of the Golden Spurs’ was a stunning defeat of the french with many knights dead – and the french were driven out of Flanders. But the french could not leave Flanders alone, not only was it a very rich province, but abandoning it might encourage others, e.g. Aquitaine, Picardie and Bretagne, to seek formal independence of the french crown. So, the following year Philippe ‘le Bel’ had the count of Hainaut, himself threatened by the flemings, to open a new front on the eastern and northern borders of Flanders, while the connétable of France, Gaucher de Châtillon, held on to the fortified town of St.Omer on the southern border. On April 4th 1303 a battle was fought at Arques in which the flemings scored a costly victory, forcing the french back into St.Omer.

The resulting truces failed and in early 1304 a new french army led by Philippe ‘le Bel’ himself moved north, meeting the flemings at Mons-en-Pèvèle on May 18th. The french won a costly, but decisive victory, which halted the flemish indepence movement for many years, sealed with the peace treaty of Athis-sur-Orge in 1305.

Many of the nobles who took part in the first succesful campaing of 1297 later died either at Courtrai or at Mons.

4 The participants and their arms

The army marshalled at Compiègne in June 1297 was a feudal host of nobles called up by individual summons from the king through his baillis and sénéchals. As such most of the nobles would have marched, camped and fought with men of their own region. Such summonses would have been served months ahead to allow for travelling from the South and the East across wooded highlands. Besides the newly summoned men, others were recalled from the occupation of Aquitaine, a march of some 700 km. From Compiègne they marched the 130 km across the northern french plain to Lille in three weeks, being reinforced there by the C.Hainaut. Investing Lille their supplies needed replenishment, and the french dispatched a large fouraging party towards the coast near Furnes / Veurne, 70 km off, which the flemings tried unsuccesfully to intercept on August 20th. When relief became unlikely, Lille capitulated in less than a week and the flemings sued for peace.

Is this reflected in the armorial? The answer is both yes and no. This is not an order of battle armorial as is e.g. the Galloway Roll (London, College of Arms, ms. M 14 bis) giving two formations involved in an action of 1300 in Scotland, but more like a traditional roll of arms starting with a segment of titled nobles followed by barons and knights. But there are traces of a regional order. The items 30-62 belong mainly to nobles having their origin in the old royal domain, modern Ile-de-France including the Vexin, south-western Beauvoisis and western Champagne. The next, 63- 95, can be placed in Picardie, closest to the flemish border. This segment ends with a younger son of the D.Brabant (Godefroi S.Aerschot [95]) and five other with flemish and hainauter origin. The fourth segment, items 96-112, are men of Normandie as noted by Michel Popoff (Marche d’Armes II, Normandie, Paris 1983). The three regions were probably named in the margins of the source manuscript (Brault ERA 84). From there the structure becomes less clear with from three to seven segments of men from Bretagne (items 158-173), the Poitou-Touraine-Limousin (items 137-173, 182-191), a few from Bourgogne (items 192-197) and again some from Picardie (items 174-181, 198-202) with a few individuals and men from Hainaut sprinkled into it.

Do we have all the army here. Probably not, though the infantry and mounted sergeants are of course not included, the army would probably have comprised some 1500 to 2500 knights and noble squires, and what we have here are practically all men of substance. The king would have wanted a substantial force, but hardly the (in medieval terms) overwhelming force collected for the Courtrai campaign of 1302 and the Mons-en-Pévèle campaign of 1304, where some 3000 knights were present at each, but probably more than the 800 estimated for the holding of the border before the battle of Arques in 1303 (deVries 14, 34, 28). From the above and a look at the titled nobles it appears that the summonses were only issued to nobles living in the North-East and along the lower Seine and Loire-Vienne rivers. The men of Bourgogne might well have been recalled from Aquitaine along with a few brabantians and others in french service. In addition, some flemings of the loyal french party (the Lelierts, from the fleur-de-lis) led by Guilbert châtelain de Bergues [92] were also present. The flemish nationalists were known as the Liepaerts, from the lion of the comital arms.

For the authorship Paul Adam speculated that the armorial was collated in blazon by a herald in the service of Robert C.Artois [7], the principal field commander. That might well be the case, but the only argument for it is that it would be an obvious job or interest for a commander’s herald. The only hard evidence at hand is that at least one manuscript (either the original or more likely a later copy) was handed down through a succession of heralds in the service of the duc & comte de Bourgogne & C.Flandre & Artois &c until it landed in the hands of Joannet Fauquët (fl.1497-1506),

5 a picardian in the service of the habsburger emperor-duke Maximilian. As with many other manuscripts from the burgundian courts copies have been found in the major depositories: Wien, Lille, Besancon and Bruxelles. Though the weight of probability is on the source manuscript to have survived in the , Robert D.Bourgogne [12], Otton C.Bourgogne [11] or even Gui C.St.Pol [9] might have been the sponsor. The manuscripts provides themselves little evidence of the authorship or early survival.

The date given at the beginning of the armorial is August 1297, which appears probable, though the compilation might well have been carried out later. Two items are curious: Robert de Wavrin S.St.Venant [91] and Jean de Haverskerke S.Hondschoote [93] placed with the leader of the Lelierts, Guilbert châtelain de Bergues [92]. Both were reportedly among the defenders of Lille (Funck-Brentano PB 239) and ought to have been excluded from the armorial. But both had a history of loyal service to the french king and must have been received into this grace and trust immediately after the surrender of Lille on August 25th. Especially Robert de St.Venant was trusted with important duties during the following years.

Returning to the 202 coats-of.arms and their bearers, there are only five items for which we do not have independent evidence of the relationship between man and arms (items 134, 167, 178, 183, 196) in the material available. There are probably a dozen items where the coats-of-arms deviate from what is currently acknowledged as correct. They are mostly minor variants, having the colours inverted or the drawing simplified as in the arms of Champagne [28]. In the case of Preuilly [83, 177] the cause might be that a charge (a maunch gules) was omitted leaving only the orle of eagles, not azure as they ought to be, but gules as the omitted charge. For Magnac [185] and Ville [176] the minor charges were misplaced and for Werchin [189] omitted. Such mistakes are common when blazons are copied.

The arms of France [1] are not a courtesy only, as the king of France, Philippe ‘le Bel’, was present in person, though probably not always and mainly leaving the actual command to the professional soldiers. From there the pride of place goes to the young members of the royal family, brothers and cousins of the king, and nominal commanders. Following them comes the high nobility, not necessarily by rank or importance, but by family. The crucial ally Jean C.Hainaut being placed as item 17 and Jean D.Bretagne, not a count, probably the most powerful vassal next to the defiant Gui C.Flandre as item 13, after the Artois and Châtillon-St.Pol families. Two young royal guests, Raymond Berenger C.Andria [5], a distant cousin of the king, and Sanchez di Aragon [5], heir to the minor kingdom of Mallorca and to the southern border area of Roussillon, are placed with the royal family. Another foreigner, hardly a guest, the councillor-diplomat-banker-soldier Mouche dei Francheschi [29] given a comital title, ends the segment.

Paul Adam mentions a few differences between the painted Wien manuscript (CPF/e) and the others, but also finding identical errors in all manuscripts, e.g. Gui Chemillé [144] and Adam Bruyères [141]. Such errors has been emended in this edition. The S.Beauval [78] has ermine a border engrailed gules in CPF/e, which Adam sugggests might have been intended for a now missing Thierry van Hondschoote (XDD:2428), a fleming known to have been in french service at the time.

In general the legends and blazons have survived in comprehensible form making it relatively easy to establish the connection between the entries and contemporary persons. Especially if one is working on well-researched editions, but this might also have been done with a reasonable ordinary

6 of arms and the standard historical works available. In a few cases it is only the name and a documentary note of attendance that allows one to make the connection to an anonymous entry in another armorial. In a dozen cases it has been necessary to alter or amend the identifications of the previous editors, usually because the precise family use of arms is hard to unravel or because of the age and/or time of death of the incumbent lord is difficult to align with the well-established date of this collation. The Trie family [45, 46, 53] is one example. The well-known Châtillon arms [9, 10, 81, 131] are another puzzle. In their many variants of minor charges, they are probably the most cited coats-of-arms in medieval armorials, but whether the changes in the posture of lions from passant to issant or rampant, or the colour change from sable to gules, are distinctive for branches and persons, or indicate parallel use by branches, is difficult to unravel. Furthermore they influence and might confound the blazons of similar arms [100]. A critical review of the Châtillon arms is sorely needed.

A last example of the problems observed and the indebtedness owed to other scolarly editors of this and other armorials is ‘mesire itier de merdoine’ [150], whom Prinet correctly identifies with Itier de Brion S.Merdogne in the Auvergne, but with the help of de Boos is connected to the vermandois Plessis-Brion family. But the head of the senior line, Gui S.Plessis-Brion also served in Flanders as a banneret in 1297 – but is not to be found in this armorial. Gui is named in VER:138. Is the anonymous entry in LBR:396 this Gui (as proposed by de Boos) or perhaps Itier?

Bruxelles, KBR, ms.G 673 pp.47-50

This 15th century copy of the CPF appears to be copied from a disordered painted copy in a hasty, sometimes nealy illegible hand. It has not been transcribed, but the legends from the major copies are reproduced as an aid to compare the manuscript with the various editions. The G673 blazons are placed opposite their closest ‘partner’ in blazonry, usually but not always identical. In a few instances the actual blazon or comments are added in italics. § indicates verification of arms. The items on the G673 pages are numbered: 1-26 (p.46), 27-74 (p.47), 75-119 (p.48), 120-162 (p.49) and 163-186 (p.50). The introduction refers to a campaign in Flanders by the king of France in 1218. Only the first 10 items have both legends and blazons, the next two have legends only, and the remainder have blazons only, though items 29 Melun and 80 Courcy are named as such without further blazon. The terms used in the blazons are different from that used in the primary copies, and the border a.o. are placed before the main charges. At least one of the copyists involved in the copies leading to G673 have made several errors in the interpretation of the arms, viz. in 103 a ‘bourdon’ is introduced as the blazon’s ‘deux fesses .. et a une bordure d’oiseles’ is confused with a bourdon or pilgrim’s staff within an orle of martlets. Though this copy, apart from the irregular concordance, corresponds well with the reconstructed CPF, it has not be used to amend the main presentation, mainly due to the unsatifactory blazonry and lack of names.
