We have come to the end of the Liturgical Year with today’s celebration of “Christ the King. What does this celebration mean? In one word: everything! It means that there is a solution to the problems of the world. Today’s Solemnity calls us to be part of the solution. It warns us that if we are not part of the solu- tion to the world’s deepest needs, we will be part of the world’s problems. Today’s celebration focuses on the fun- damental truth of our Faith: that Jesus Christ died so that we may live…eternally…in His Father’s Kingdom. As Saint Paul reminds us in today’s Second Reading, Jesus’ resurrection restored us to the life that was lost by Origi- nal Sin. All who belong to Christ will be handed over to God the Father at the end of time. That includes each one of us. But handed over to what? Eternal union with the Father in Christ, or eternal separation from the same. To- day’s celebration is not just about events of the past. The Solemnity of Christ the King is about us, right here, right now. If Christ does not reign supreme in our lives we will easily overlook His Presence in the hungry, the thirsty, the strangers, the naked and all those Jesus mentions in the Gospel. Recognizing His Presence in the mar- ginalized gives us opportunities to grow closer to Him. Without Jesus as King, Thanksgiving is just about the pil- grims and Christmas will be nothing more than a celebration of material excess. But WITH Jesus as King, everything changes. May this approaching Season of Advent be a time of fruitful reflection. What does this celebration mean? In one word: everything! — Fr. Tom New Communion Procession Coming!

In answer to repeated requests to “make our Communion pro- cession more simple,” we will begin a new way of processing to re- ceive Communion next weekend. While the image to the left is not particularly clear, it conveys the basic idea of the flow for Commun- ion lines. We’ll begin our Communion procession with the center sec- tions processing up the middle isle. Choir members will receive Communion last, in order to begin the Communion hymn as soon as possible. At an appropriate moment our ushers will invite those seated in the front two side sections to process down the side isles to the back of the nave, cross over, and process up the middle isle. Fol- lowing these front sections, those seated in the main side areas will follow, beginning with the front pews. Once reaching the front of the middle (main) isle, those coming to Communion may choose any of the four stations for the Precious Body (circled numbers 1,2,3,4 in the diagram), and thereafter receive the Precious Blood (stations numbered 5,6,7,8) before returning to their pews. We plan to use the same format at all weekend Masses. We hope this process will shorten the time for our Commun- ion process, as well as being a bit more intuitive for visitors to our

A new ministry for women Thank you! The Office EVANGELIZATION Of: CATECHESIS Pope Benedict XVI on prudence This week we reflect on a beautiful quote by Pope Benedict XVI. By reflecting on its main themes, humility, reason, and truth, we can get a better understanding of what he is saying to the bishops. Pope Benedict XVI made this point in a homily to a group of newly ordained bishops, telling them that prudence is “something different from shrewdness.” On the contrary, “prudence demands humble, disciplined and vigilant reason that does not allow itself to be dazzled by prejudices; does not judge according to desires and passions, but seeks the truth — even uncomfortable truth.” Thoughts from the catechism to help us understand the quote…

Our holy mother, the Church, holds and teaches that God, the first principle and last end of all things, can be known with certainty from the created world by the natural light of human reason." Without this capacity, man would not be able to welcome God's revelation. Man has this capacity because he is created "in the image of God." Catechism 36 Man tends by nature toward the truth. He is obliged to honor and bear witness to it: "It is in accord- ance with their dignity that all men, because they are persons . . . are both impelled by their nature and bound by a moral obligation to seek the truth, especially religious truth. They are also bound to adhere to the truth once they come to know it and direct their whole lives in accordance with the de- mands of truth. Catechism 2467 “Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist, there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance.” St. Augustine

Questions: 1) Am I humble? How can I cultivate this virtue? 2) Am I more likely to judge according to desires and passions or by reason? 3) What is shrewdness? Can I distinguish it from prudence?

Challenge: Let us seek truth with all of our being. Reflect on one of the times we have avoided “uncomfortable truth” and ask God to give us the courage to seek it. “Prudence… seeks the truth—even uncomfortable truth.”
