4 GREETINGS FROM THE YMCA

Welcome and Good Evening,

It is with great pleasure that I greet all assembled here tonight in celebration of the YMCA of Greater Bergen County’s 54th Annual Sports Award Banquet.

The Y is a powerful association of men, women and children joined together by a shared commitment to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthy living and fostering a sense of social responsibility. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in kids, our health and our neighbors. That’s why strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side by side with our neighbors in our communities to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Congratulations to tonight’s honorees and thank you for all that you do in your schools and communities. We recognize each of you for your personal and ath- letic achievements, and for instilling in each other a collective sense of what is right and what is good. These are values that you have learned while competing in sports, and values by which you have chosen to live.

Thank you to the members of the Sports Award Committee for their hard work and dedication in putting this event together. It is truly one of Bergen County’s premier events.

Finally, I would like to thank all the businesses, corporations and organizations participating in this year’s banquet that provided financial support for Y pro- grams that serve the greater Bergen County community.

Again, congratulations to all here tonight and best wishes for continued success.

Glenn MacAfee Executive Director YMCA of Greater Bergen County

We count on the generosity of our members and partners to keep our Annual doors open to whomever needs a place to go to help them be more healthy, confident, connected and secure. All proceeds from tonight’s Support event will provide programs such as child care, camp and swim lessons to those in need. Campaign Thank You!

JOHN FRANCOLLA AND LARRY LIFRIERI Special Achievement Award

Larry has been married to his wife, Viola, for forty-seven years. They have three children: Larry (46), Jean (44), and Joe (38). They currently have eight grandchildren.

John has been married to his wife, Peggy, for fifty-one years. He has four children: Gina (50), John (47), Lisa (44), and Brian (37). They currently have seven grandchildren.

Larry and John joined WCTV, an all-volunteer access group, in the spring of 1985. They began televising Town Rec. in the fall of 1985. Their first high school broadcast was Thanksgiving Day 1987 – Demarest vs. Westwood. Since then Larry and John have broadcast almost 250 high school football games, which include forty-one playoff games, eleven sectional championship games, five of which were broadcast from Giant Stadium.

Their first championship broadcast game was in 1989 between St. Peter’s Prep. and St. Joseph’s Regional. They broadcast what was referred to as “The Game of the Century” between Paramus Catholic and Bergen Catholic in December of 1992. In 1994, when the high school football champi- onship returned to Giant Stadium, they broadcast the inaugural game between St. Peter’s Prep and Bergen Catholic.

Since 1993 they have been covering the Oscar Thompson Memorial Basketball Tournament (the Jamboree). They have called over 160 Jamboree games and 25 Jamboree championships. In 2017 Larry and John were presented with the Howard H. Bollerman Memorial Award for out- standing contributions to High School Basketball in Bergen County.

They have broadcast two high school girls’ county basketball championships and three girls’ high school softball county championships. They have broadcast NCAA men and women basketball games: Robert Morris vs FDU, LIU vs FDU, and Mt. St. Mary’s vs Ramapo. Since 1993, on WCTV’s Live Exit 168 Show, Larry and John have interviewed over 200 coaches, reporters, student athlete and sport celebrities.

We thank the YMCA of Greater Bergen County for this prestigious award. We recognize all the WCTV volunteers who freely provide their time and talent to make WCTV a leader in broadcasting high school sports. Without the assistance of these dedicated individuals, none of our broadcasts would be possible.
