We prove that proper interval graphs with ~> 2 vertices have hamiltonian paths, those with ~>3 vertices have hamiltonian cycles, and those with />4 vertices are hamiltonian-connected if and only if they are, respectively, 1-, 2-, or 3-connected. We also study the guard problem in spiral polygons by connecting the class of nontrivial connected proper interval graphs with the class of stick-intersection graphs of spiral polygons. Keywords." Introduction The main purpose of this paper is to study the hamiltonicity of proper interval graphs with applications to the guard problem in spiral polygons. Our terminology and graph notation are standard, see [2], except as indicated. The intersection graph of a family ~ of nonempty sets is derived by representing each set in ~ with a vertex and connecting two vertices with an edge if and only if their corresponding sets intersect. An interval graph is the intersection graph G of a family J of intervals on a real line. J is usually called the interval model for G. 1 Graph Theory “Begin at the beginning,” the King said, gravely, “and go on till you come to the end; then stop.” — Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland The Pregolya River passes through a city once known as K¨onigsberg. In the 1700s seven bridges were situated across this river in a manner similar to what you see in Figure 1.1. The city’s residents enjoyed strolling on these bridges, but, as hard as they tried, no residentof the city was ever able to walk a route that crossed each of these bridges exactly once. The Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler learned of this frustrating phenomenon, and in 1736 he wrote an article [98] about it. Graph Theory At first, the usefulness of Euler’s ideas and of “graph theory” itself was found only in solving puzzles and in analyzing games and other recreations. In the mid 1800s, however, people began to realize that graphs could be used to model many things that were of interest in society. For instance, the “Four Color Map Conjec- ture,” introduced by DeMorgan in 1852, was a famous problem that was seem- ingly unrelated to graph theory. The conjecture stated that four is the maximum number of colors required to color any map where bordering regions are colored differently. -

On Computing Longest Paths in Small Graph Classes Ryuhei Uehara∗ Yushi Uno† July 28, 2005 Abstract The longest path problem is to find a longest path in a given graph. While the graph classes in which the Hamiltonian path problem can be solved efficiently are widely investigated, few graph classes are known to be solved efficiently for the longest path problem. For a tree, a simple linear time algorithm for the longest path problem is known. We first generalize the algorithm, and show that the longest path problem can be solved efficiently for weighted trees, block graphs, and cacti. We next show that the longest path problem can be solved efficiently on some graph classes that have natural interval representations. Keywords: efficient algorithms, graph classes, longest path problem. 1 Introduction The Hamiltonian path problem is one of the most well known NP-hard problem, and there are numerous applications of the problems [17]. For such an intractable problem, there are two major approaches; approximation algorithms [20, 2, 35] and algorithms with parameterized complexity analyses [15]. In both approaches, we have to change the decision problem to the optimization problem. Therefore the longest path problem is one of the basic problems from the viewpoint of combinatorial optimization. From the practical point of view, it is also very natural approach to try to find a longest path in a given graph, even if it does not have a Hamiltonian path. However, finding a longest path seems to be more difficult than determining whether the given graph has a Hamiltonian path or not. -

E-mail: [email protected]. Abstract. In this paper, we study the sub-coloring and hypo-coloring problems on interval graphs. These problems have applications in job scheduling and distributed computing and can be used as “subroutines” for other combinatorial optimization problems. In the sub-coloring problem, given a graph G, we want to partition the vertices of G into minimum number of sub-color classes, where each sub-color class induces a union of disjoint cliques in G. In the hypo-coloring problem, given a graph G, and integral weights on vertices, we want to find a partition of the vertices of G into sub-color classes such that the sum of the weights of the heaviest cliques in each sub-color class is minimized. We present a “forbidden subgraph” characterization of graphs with sub-chromatic number k and use this to derive a a 3-approximation algorithm for sub-coloring interval graphs. Thus, many governments recognize it as a critical element in ensuring the daily existence of societies in their countries. Those responsible for the proper operation of the transport sector must have the right tools to model, analyze, and optimize its elements. One of the most critical problems is the need to prevent bottlenecks in transport networks. Thus, the main aim of the article was to define the parameters characterizing the transportation network vulnerability and select algorithms to support their search. The parameters proposed are based on characteristics related to domination in graph theory. The domination, edge-domination concepts, and related topics, such as bondage-connected and weighted bondage-connected numbers, were applied as the tools for searching and identifying the bottlenecks in transportation networks. Furthermore, the algorithms for finding the minimal dominating set and minimal (maximal) weighted dominating sets are proposed. This way, the exemplary academic transportation network was analyzed in two cases: stationary and dynamic. Some conclusions are presented. The main one is the fact that the methods given in this article are universal and applicable to both small and large-scale networks. Moreover, the approach can support the dynamic analysis of bottlenecks in transport networks. Internet service providers (ISPs), cell-phone companies, search engines, e-commerce sites, and a va- riety of other businesses receive, process, store, and transmit gigabytes, terabytes, or even petabytes of data each day. May 17, 2006 PREFACE Most of the problems in this document are the problems suggested as home- work in a graduate course Combinatorics and Graph Theory I (Math 688) taught by me at the University of Delaware in Fall, 2000. Later I added several more problems and solutions. Most of the solutions were prepared by me, but some are based on the ones given by students from the class, and from subsequent classes. I tried to acknowledge all those, and I apologize in advance if I missed someone. The course focused on Enumeration and Matching Theory. Many problems related to enumeration are taken from a 1984-85 course given by Herbert S. Wilf at the University of Pennsylvania. I would like to thank all students who took the course.
