After leaving that business the plan was to travel the world and teach english as a second language by day and play poker at night. Poker has been a passion since 1980. More for the skills needed to be successful, then the gambling aspect. Living for several months in such exotic locations such a Macau, Hong Kong, France, South America, Austrailia, and Italy. This was a good plan and would have been a good way to enjoy the rest of my life and soothe the gypsy in me, but then I boarded the January 2005 Blues Cruise and the path changed. One week later leaving the blues cruise my future plans changed and a new life mission emerged. To help blues musicians, blues music, and the blues community however possible, so the music that has moved me my entire life might continues to evolve and exist. Let's Go Bluesin'! Greetings to our Bluesin' Family, he musicians of the world, along with the live venues, the service, travel, and Ttourism industries, and so many millions of others have had their lives turned upside down since March 2020. Originally scheduled to sail out of Port Everglades this past Sunday on the Holland America Eurodam, we have now rescheduled for LRBC #35 October 24-31, 2021 and can't wait to be back at sea together! To stay connected with our cruiser family, we've teamed up with our fantastic musicians to present: Dry Docked & Landlocked - a Virtual Cruise for the week of October 25-31, starting at 5:00pm CST daily via LRBC Facebook Live, and LRBC Youtube. These daily videos will also be available on the LRBC YouTube page to be viewed at your convenience. We have reached out to the musicians and staff across the globe who will be sharing greetings and well wishes from their homes. We will be featuring videos throughout the week of their living room performances, previous LRBC performances, and various activities onboard the cruises. Legendary invites you to jump on and participate in these Live Streams! See you soon, stay safe everyone! They represent two races, and resumes that legitimatize each one’s right to be called a legacy act. Two of them, Charlie Musselwhite and Jimbo Mathis, contribute original songs. Others are featured in numbers that range from Alvin Youngblood Hart’s take on music spanning almost a century in origin from his reconstruction of the Hendrix rocker “Stone Free” to revamping Charlie Patton’s “Pony Blues” and The Mississippi Sheiks’ “Stop And Listen Blues.” Luther and Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars perform with their late dad Jim Dickinson on Wilbert Harrison’s “Let’s Work Together” and “Come On Down To My House.” As varied as these artists are, they all reach deep within to activate their muse. And each has a deep love, understanding, and the expertise to deliver unique takes on these songs. Musselwhite opens the CD with an original “Blues, Why Worry Me,” is featured on another original, “Strange Land” he wrote when he was 18 trying to feel his way around Chicago, and a cover of the Memphis Jug Band’s “K.C. Moan.” Nowhere does it say this, but I’d be willing to bet most of these recordings were captured in one take. Recorded in 2007 at the late Jim Dickinson’s Zebra Ranch Studio in Independence, Mississippi, the ten numbers feature the musicians gathered in a circle vamping off each other while the tape ran. Spontaneity and pure love of the process dominate. Cody Dickinson is quoted on the cover: “I hope the love in the room can be heard in the music. This record was truly a joy to make.” Spontaneity has always been an important measure of great blues but an elusive one as recording techniques make perfection the imperfect descendent of music born at early 20th century Saturday night fish fries.

You may be surprised to find out that the lead vocalist and creator of Adwela and the Uprising was a football star, semi-pro football coach and team owner. However, after you hear and see the group share their talents, it’s believable that someone has a remarkable ability to pull together a team of people to do their incredible reggae presentations. Most of the facts about this phenomenal reggae group can be found on their website: www.AdwelaAndTheUprising.com which is fine. But to have the best experience with Adwela and the Uprising, you should see and here them live at one of their engagements. This story wouldn’t be happening if I would not have heard and saw them during their open for the legendary Wailers at the Irie Wine Beer, Reggae and Jazz Festival at Shiley Acres in Inwood, West Virginia this fall. Asking myself, “How does this group rank to open for the famous Wailers”? Winning the Virginia Reggae awards, “Favorite New Artist” award is one way to get you in a lineup with the Wailers.

As everyone is aware by now, it is business most unusual these days, and that affects Charlotte Blues Society as well as the businesses we support with live music. CBS has been taking the cues from City, State and Federal officials regarding our events and gatherings throughout the novel coronavirus / COVID-91 pandemic. The Stay at Home order by the County has indeed affected upcoming events, and we hope every one of our members and fellow music lovers will take this advice to heart and follow it, in order that this virus be allowed to run its course with the least transmission and loss of life. We love each of you and want you to take care of your health, and stay safe: “Stay Home” This is serious stuff friends. You know when The Stones start cancelling dates we are looking at something that is epic. The Blues Music Awards in Memphis are cancelled. Live concerts throughout the Carolinas and the world have come to a halt. This is not the flu. This is not a cold. This is a moment in time that we must take action, or perhaps ,more clearly: non- action.

  • PRESS RELEASE Can Ya' Dig It
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 25, 2015 CONTACT: Heather West, 773/301-5767, [email protected] New Orleans, LA – Since bursting onto the scene in 1998, John Lisi has been hailed as one of the best guitar slingers in Louisiana – a major rave for the most musical place in all the world. Indeed, Lisi is a master of the Dobro, mandolin, resonator and Stratocaster, and turns offbeat portrayals of everyday life into funky-bluesy- body-shakin’ music that just makes a person feel better. Call it what you will, John Lisi calls it the same thing he calls his band—Delta Funk! The band’s infectious sound and energetic stage presence combined with Lisi’s brilliant guitar work have made them natural favorites in their hometown of New Orleans. Shut the Front Door is Lisi’s latest and most fully realized rendering of his signature sound, complete with all the essential ingredients—sassy female background vocals, kickin’ horns, and an in-the-pocket rhythm section topped with stunning guitar riffs. His 2002 Louisiana Red Hot Records debut Blues for Chloe saw Lisi backed by blues giants Big Jay McNeely, Henry Gray and Larry Garner. Though Lisi has two prior releases with his mainstay ensemble, Preachin’ to the Choir (2000) and Can Ya’ Dig It (2004), Shut the Front Door is Lisi’s first time teaming up with Louisiana Red Hot to bring Delta Funk! to the national arena. Notable among a number of industry nods, Lisi was honored alongside Dr. John and Alvin Batiste with the Slim Harpo Award for Blues Pioneer in 2009.

Sammy Dee Morton Sammy Dee Morton has played Louisiana and Texas style Blues for 25 years. His smooth, soulful and energetic way of playing has captured many an ear. Sammy Dee developed his chops playing alongside Blues and Cajun performers such as: Kenny Neal, Debbie Davies, Tab Benoit, and Doug Kershaw. He has appeared on multiple recordings, including his latest, Business Is Business and Sammy Dee LIVE, which was recorded at the Boulder Theater while opening for Robert Cray. In 2010, Sammy Dee's song, Strat Struttin’ was released on Guitar Masters Vol. 3 & 4: Les Paul Dedication, BHP Music, Ltd. In 2005, Sammy was deemed an “Honorary Louisiana Bluesman” by the Louisiana Music Commission. In the 70's, Sammy Dee managed a recording studio and used his off hours to further develop his musical talents. His goal was to create his own style. Over the years, Sammy discovered his longing to master the Blues. In the 80's, he played 6 years in a shag band in South Carolina and this helped to develop his strong command for rhythm. Later on in his life, while touring with Doug Kershaw (the Rajin Cajun), Sammy found himself at the New Orleans Jazz Fest opening for greats like Al Green and B.B. King and at Austin Texas, Steppenwolf. Sammy Dee spent five and a half years touring with Doug in the U.S., Canada and overseas. Also, he spent a while living in Louisiana near New Orleans and played with several special musicians which added more influence to his playing style.
