Chuck Hepola Associate Head Coach • Running Backs/Recruiting Coordinator

Chuck Hepola is in his fourth year as running backs coach/recruiting coordinator and second as associate head coach, previously serving as assistant head coach in 2011. Under Hepola’s guidance, the Colonels have had an All- Southland running back in two of his seasons. Last season, Marcus Washington, who earned all-conference in 2011, was named honorable mention after ranking fourth in the SLC with 59.8 yards rushing per game. Hepola came to Nicholls after a one-year stint at Louisiana-Monroe. Prior to ULM, Hepola spent the previous four years at East Central University as the offensive coordinator/quarterback’s coach. For ECU, Hepola coached six all-conference players, including two-time first-team selection quarterback Marcus Johnson. Under Hepola’s guidance, Johnson became the school’s all-time leading passer as a junior and shattered ECU’s single-season passing record with over 3,100 yards in 2008. In 2007, Hepola guided ECU’s offense, setting 13 school records on the offensive side of the ball. Before his four-year stint with ECU, Hepola spent two seasons as an assistant, specializing in quarterbacks under current Nicholls head coach Charlie Stubbs at the University of Tulsa. Hepola was an integral part of the schools prior to signing on with Tulsa. He served as head coach at Logan- 2003 staff that guided Tulsa to an 8-4 record, a second place finish in the Rogersville and was defensive coordinator at Hillcrest and Willard. Jeremy Atwell Assistant Head Coach • Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers

Jeremy Atwell is in his fifth season as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Colonels, second as assistant head coach and seventh overall with the Nicholls football staff. Last season, senior linebacker Jordan Piper emerged as one of the top tackler’s in the NCAA, racking up a Southland best 9.7 per game.At UCA, Piper tied the single-game program record of 23 tackles, which was set in 1977. Atwell, who spent four years as the defensive coordinator at Thibodaux High School, first joined the Nicholls staff as the defensive end coach in 2001. A native of Tulsa, Okla., Atwell wrapped up a distinguished playing career at Southeast Missouri State in 1999 as he was named first-team All-Ohio Valley as a linebacker, leading the OVC in both tackles and tackles for a loss. Atwell arrived in Cape Girardeau in January of 1998 after spending two seasons at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College in his home state. At NEO, Atwell earned second-team all-conference accolades as a linebacker after making the move from strong safety his freshman season. After winding up his playing career, Atwell spent a year working with the SEMO program as a student coach. Included in his responsibilities were coaching the Indians’ secondary and coordinating weekly film exchange. He also coordinated the walk-on program and graded and evaluated recruits on film. Atwell and his wife, the former Cindy Adams, have two sons, Christian (11) and Cameron (4), and a daughter, Callie-Claire (8).

steve adams Assistant Coach • Special Teams Coordinator/Safeties

Steve Adams is in his first season as the Colonels’ special teams coordinator/safeties coach after spending two years at Concord University. While at Concord, he served as the Mountain Lions’ defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator as well as the special teams coordinator in 2011 and co-special teams coordinator in 2012. Last season, the Mountain Lions ranked in the nation’s top 10 in scoring defense (17.2 ppg/9th) and pass defense (163.3 ypg/7th), while finishing 13th in the NCAA Division-II in total defense (293.9). All four of his starting defensive that season, ranking fifth in turnover margin (+1.4) and sixth in backs earned all-conference honors – including first-team All-American (22). Justin Anderson Assistant Coach • Wide Receivers/ Passing Game Coordinator Justin Anderson is in his fourth season as wide receivers coach for the Colonel football program. Anderson came to Nicholls after serving as an offensive graduate assistant at his alma mater, Brigham Young University. Anderson, a native of Orem, Utah, was a two-year letterwinner for the Cougars receiving corps in 2001-02. He was a part of the 2001 Mountain West Conference championship squad that went on to compete in the Liberty Bowl. Prior to joining the Cougars, Anderson was a standout player at Ricks College, where he earned all-region honors. Before returning back to BYU, Anderson spent four years as the

offensive coordinator at Harmony High School in St. Cloud, Florida. Under his expertise, the Longhorns won a district championship and he helped many prep athletes go on to compete on the collegiate level. Anderson is married to the former Anne Stock and the couple resides in Thibodaux with their four daughters: Dakota (11), Kenedi (9), Rubee (7), and Peyton (4) and infant son, Jayce.

Freddie banks Assistant Coach • Cornerbacks

Freddie Banks is in his first season with the Colonel football coaching staff, serving as the cornerbacks coach. Banks comes to Thibodaux after spending two seasons with the Minnesota State University Moorhead football program, acting as the defensive backs coach/defensive play caller in 2012 and cornerbacks coach in 2011. Along with his defensive duties, Banks helped out with the special teams and assisted the strength and conditioning program. Last year, he also served as assistant director of development, working mainly with alumni relations. Before becoming a coach, Banks, a native of Harvey, Ill., played cornerback at North Dakota State from 2007-2010. As a senior, he contributed to the Bison defense that ranked number one in pass efficiency and interceptions in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. In 2008, he was part of the defense that led the FCS in pass defense and ranked fifth in total defense, 19th in scoring defense and 22nd in rush defense. While at NDSU, Banks earned a degree in sociology with a minor in advertising/public relations. Banks is married to Candace Rena Banks.

Matt Clark Assistant Coach • Offensive Line

Matt Clark is in his first season as the offensive line coach and second year overall with the Colonels. Last season under Clark’s guidance, tight end Nick Scelfo landed on the the All-Southland and All-Louisiana teams after finishing third on the team in receptions and receiving yards. Clark joined the Nicholls coaching staff after spending three seasons as an offensive graduate assistant at Louisiana-Monroe. Clark, a native of College Station, Texas, worked with the offensive line at ULM for two years after assisting the quarterbacks and wide receivers in 2009. In his first season, Clark helped develop two receivers who earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors and the offense compiled the fifth-highest yard-per-game average (392.3) in program history. Clark began his collegiate football career at Air Force before transferring to Western Washington University, where he was a three-year starter at While at WWU, he worked as an intern with the Seattle Seahawks in tight end and fullback for the Vikings. Brandon nowlin Assistant Coach • Tight Ends

Brandon Nowlin joins the Colonel coaching staff after serving as head football coach and athletic director at Morgan City High School for three years. While at Morgan City, coach Nowlin was selected as the Tri-Parish Coach of the Year in 2011. Before taking over at Morgan City in 2010, Nowlin coached in the collegiate ranks, starting in 2006 at Iona College where he worked with the defensive line and specialists for the Gaels. Nowlin then coached at Adrian College, serving as special teams coordinator and tight ends/offensive backs coach. He also acted as the assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Bulldog program. After coaching at Adrian, Nowlin spent three seasons at Central Arkansas until 2010, where he coached the tight ends/H-backs and was a special teams assistant. During his tenure at UCA, the Bears claimed a Southland Conference championship in 2008, finishing with a 10-2 overall record and a 6-1 mark in the SLC. While at UCA, Nowlin coached All-American and All- Southland Conference tight end Marquez Branson, previously of the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons. In 2008, Branson led all tight ends in the FCS in receiving yards (737) and touchdowns (11) while finishing second in nation in receptions (45). During his three seasons at UCA, the Bears averaged 35.4 points per game and ranked in the top twenty-five in every offensive statistical category.

A native of Baton Rouge and graduate of Catholic High, Nowlin played football at LSU where he was a member of the 2003 National Championship team as an H-back/fullback and was also named to the Academic All-SEC Team. At LSU, he received a degree in business administration before earning a Masters in sport management. While attending graduate school, Nowlin began his coaching career at Catholic High, working with the offensive line and tight ends in 2004 before spending a season directing the running backs/special teams.

Brandon Washington is in his first season with the Colonel football program, serving as the defensive line coach. Washington joins Nicholls after coaching the defensive line at the Atlanta Sports Academy from 2010-12. Under his direction, the Spartans recorded 123 sacks in three seasons, including 67 in 2012, helping the team to a 40-6 overall record. While at ASA, he also served as the strength and conditioning coach.
