Recollections of Life in Clayton Gordon Best Wright (Emigrated to Auckland New Zealand 1950) Clayton History Group Part One of Two I was born on 16th August 1926 at 17 Pasture Side Terr (East), my father’s name was William Wright and my mother’s name was Hilda Annie (nee Moore). When I was born, my mother was attended by Dr William Cunliffe and Nurse Brook, I was the only child brought into the world on Nurse Brook’s birthday. In those days food was rather basic, but it seemed important to get plenty of fat inside you so as to withstand the cold winters, not apparently a good idea these days. When we lived on Oxford St my father had a vegetable garden and grew broad beans, peas, potatoes and cabbage. Later while living at “The Nook” we had an allotment near what is now the council estate, a poultry run at Tenter Hill and a goat called Chloe which was put out to graze in the Avenue during the day. did arrive the ink was made of Stephens dry ink and water. When we lived in Cambridge Street in1933, we were as with many other parts of Clayton, on the night soil disposal system. This involved what was called a privy /midden, one part a toilet and one part for rubbish. Night soil collectors called with a horse and cart to empty the privy/midden and dispose of it in one of the disused quarries in the district.
