2016 CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP

HOW IT ALL STARTED: Cleveland opened up their 20th playoff appearance on April 17 against Detroit. The Cavs swept the Pistons, 4-0, in the First Round to advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals for the 10th time in franchise history. They followed that up with a 4-0 sweep over Atlanta to get to the Eastern Conference Finals for the 6th time ever. The Cavs defeated Toronto, 4-2, to make it to the NBA Finals for the second year in a row and third time ever (2007, 2015, 2016). The Cavs defeated Golden State 4-3 for their first ever NBA title, improving to 100-89 all-time in the postseason (16-5 in 2016), including 63-31 at home.

2016 NBA CHAMPIONS: The Cavaliers won their first ever NBA championship after defeating the Golden State Warriors, 4-3. Below are a few notes on their Finals win:

 DROUGHT IS OVER: The Cavs’ 1st championship in franchise history ended a 52-year drought by major pro sports teams from Cleveland (Dec. 27, 1964-Browns).

 ROAD WIN IN GAME 7: Cleveland became just the 4th team to win an NBA Finals Game 7 on the road (4-15) and the first since Washington Bullets beat the Seattle SuperSonics in 1978. The Cavs also clinched each of their four playoff series in 2016 on the road, becoming just the 3rd team to do so since the current playoff format began in 1984, joining San Antonio (1999) and Detroit (1989).

 DOWN 3-1: Cleveland became the first team to overcome a 3-1 deficit in the Finals. Each of the 32 previous teams to trail 3-1 lost in the Finals. Overall, the Cavs are the 11th team to climb back and win after trailing any playoff series 3-1.

 FORCING A FINALS GAME 7: The Cavs were just the 3rd team in NBA history to force a Finals Game 7 after trailing 3-1 (1951 New York Knicks and 1966 Los Angeles Lakers).

 100TH PLAYOFF WIN IN GAME 7: Cleveland’s 93-89 victory in Game 7 of the Finals was also the 100th playoff victory in team history (100-89).

 DO IT AGAIN: Irving, James and Love totaled at least 20 points apiece in back-to-back games twice (May 6-8, May 25-27). No other trio had back-to-back games of that kind in the 2016 postseason. The last time a trio achieved that feat in consecutive games of the Conference Finals was in 1982, when the Lakers' Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bob McAdoo, and Norm Nixon reached 20 points in back-to-back games against the Spurs. 2015-16 REGULAR SEASON RECAP

ON TOP OF THE EAST: Cleveland finished the 2015-16 regular season with a 57-25 record, their best mark since the 2009-10 season (61-21). The Cavs clinched the top seed in the Eastern Conference after a 109-94 win over Atlanta on April 11. It marked the 3rd time in team history the Cavs finished with the best regular season record in the conference (2008-09 & 2009-10).

 CENTRAL CROWN: For the second straight season, Cleveland secured the Central Division title after defeating Denver, 124-91, on March 21. It marked their 5th Central Division title in franchise history (1975-76, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2014-15). Also in the win over the Nuggets, the Cavs reached the 50-win mark for 9th time in team history (1988-89, 1991-92, 1992-93, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2008-09, 2009-10 & 2014-15).

 SHARING THE ROCK: The Cavs averaged 22.7 assists in 2015-16 and were 35-3 this season when dishing out 23 assists or more.

 A TRIO: The Cavs had three players score 20 or more 10 times in 2015-16 (1/4 vs. TOR, 1/6 at WAS, 1/8 at MIN, 1/21 vs. LAC, 1/29 vs. DET, 1/30 vs. SAS, 2/6 vs. NOP, 2/8 vs. SAC, 3/10 at LAL, 4/3 vs. CHA). ROAD FINISH: Cleveland finished with a 24-17 (.585) record on the road, which was tied for the best mark in the Eastern Conference (tied-3rd in NBA). Their .585 road win percentage was also the 3rd-highest in franchise history.

DOWN GOES THE WEST: Cleveland finished the West portion of the 2015-16 schedule with a 22-8 mark against the Western Conference, which includes a 12-3 mark at The Q. Over the last 45 regular season games versus the West, the Cavs are 36-9 against them, including 20-3 at home. Cleveland’s 22-8 record (.733) against the West this season was the franchise’s 3rd-best mark against them (26-4 in 2008-09 and 23-7 in 2009-10).

The last Cleveland player with a first-half double-double in consecutive games was Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who did it in three straight games from Jan. 12-16, 1998. ROCKIN’ THE Q: The Cavs sold out all 41 regular season home games in 2015-16, the third time in franchise history the team has accomplished that feat (2009-10 and 2014-15). To date, including regular season (381) and playoffs (55), there have been 436 sellouts at The Q and 102 consecutive sellouts (regular season and playoff games only, dating back to 10/30/14).

 102 IN A ROW: From the last 29 games from the 2008-09 season to January 21, 2011 (including seven 2009 playoff games and six in 2010), the Cavs sold out 102 consecutive games at The Q.

 11 STRAIGHT HOME OPENER SELLOUTS: The Cavs opened the 2015-16 season at Quicken Loans Arena on Oct. 30 against the Miami Heat, which was their 11th straight home opener sellout.

 Cleveland also filled up the arena in all 10 home games during the 2015 Playoffs.

 The team’s 400th sellout (regular + post) at The Q came on Jan. 2, 2016 against Orlando.

On Tuesdays and Thursday, coaches and members of the front office, along with other Cavalier Legends will appear with Wills and Snyder. CHARGE NAME NATE REINKING AS HEAD COACH: Nate Reinking has been named the fourth Head Coach in Canton Charge history. He originally joined the Charge as an assistant under then Head Coach Steve Hetzel for the 2013-14 season with a focus on player development and opposition scouting. After Hetzel’s NBA Call-Up, he was retained under new Head Coach Jordi Fernandez as an assistant the next two seasons while adding game-planning and game personnel to his responsibilities. With defensive principles the focus in his three years on the Charge staff, Canton’s scoring defense ranked 1st in 2013-14 (101.4ppg), 1st in 2014-15 (95.8ppg), and 5th last season (103.3ppg). Reinking came to the Charge with over 20 years of collegiate, professional and international experience as both a player and coach. He is an assistant coach with the Great Britain National Team, as he prepares scouting reports and implements game plans through on- court instruction and video breakdown. Reinking also played for Great Britain from 2005-12, representing the nation in international tournaments such as the Olympics and European Championships.
