S m y t h Department of Chemistry, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey Received May 18, 1955 A bond moment is a measure of the asymmetry of charge distribution in the bond and its immediate vicinity and is affected by the environment of the molecular section in question. The moment values, 0-2.0 X 1(R18, for typical covalent single bonds lie, for the most part, between zero and about 0.2 of the values which they would have if they were pure, undistorted ionic bonds, and those of coordinate single bonds, 3-4.5 X 10_18, lie between 0.35 and 0.65 of the undistorted ionic bond values. The lower limits, 2-4 X 10~IS, established for bonds between metallic and acidic elements in organometallic com­ pounds indicate polarities roughly intermediate between those of typically covalent and those of typically ionic bonds. The moments found for salt molecules, 6-20 X 10-18, are lowered by inductive distortion of the electronic shells below' those calculated for the undistorted ionic structures. The covalent single bond moments tend to increase roughly with increase in the electronegativity

Tracy Hall Some of my pioneer progenitors were polygamous members of the Church of Jesus christ of Latter Day Saints which included my grand father arid grandmother. They came across the plains with the great western movement of these.pioneers. My father, Howard Hall, was a non member of the church but was converted by my mother, Florence Tracy Hall, Early on, my parents began to call D;le Tracy and I have used my fonnal name as H Tracy Hall. My grand father, Henry C. Hall began working on the railroad at an early age and the tradition carried on for a long time for three generations. I was born on October 20th in Ogden Utah. I had four brothers, Eug~ne, Wendell, Donald, and'Delbert. Mother never had any daughters. My brothers, and I all had an interest in beco~ing educated persons. Eugene became a respected Pharma­ cist, Wendell became a university professor specializing in languages, Delbert joined the air force and ~came an important officer in his career. All of us took part in World'War II. Wendell'had the most combat on the German lines but came through alive. .... I was' interested in science and technology at a very early age. While in the fourth grade in the Marriott School, our teacher asked eac~ mem­ ber of the class what they wanted to do when they grew up. I told her that I wanted to be a scientist at the General Electric Company. I was only able to say that because I had read all about Thomas Edison and other Scientists at the Carnegie Public Library.

    Recorded on tape 21 January 1964. Ida Rose: I am going to try to get Tracy Hall to tell the story of his man-made diamonds. He has the flu today and is home from work. That is why his voice will sound hoarse. Tracy: Ida Rose's statement was made yesterday. Today's the 21st, and I think she has cornered me and I might have to do what she wants me to do. In October of 1948, I accepted a position as research associate at the General Electric Company in Schenectady, New York. During September I had considered several job opportunities, had traveled to Rochester, New York, to talk to the Eastman Kodak people, had talked to Hercules Powder Company, Allegheny Ballistics lab in Cumberland Maryland, and hd talked with DuPont people, in Virginia, New Jersey and Wilmington and had also talked to people in the Bakelite, Boundbrook, New Jersey. Peculiar thing - all these people wanted to give me a job, but General Electric didn't. As a matter of fact when I had written to General Electric, they told me there was no point in coming to Schenectady for an interview. But I wrote to them and told them I was passing by anyway and would it be all right if I stopped off. They reluctantly said 0>K>, so I did stop off and I apparently didn't make too good an impression with the man who headed the Chemistry Department, Abraham Lincoln Marshall, and with other officials, but did make a real good impression with a fellow by the name of William Cass who at that time seemed to be up and coming in the Chemistry Department and was assisting in a lot of their recruiting activities.

    A Short Biography of H. Tracy Hall I was born October 20, 1919 to Howard Hall and Florence Almina Tracy in Ogden, Weber County, Utah. I was the first of five sons born to this couple. The names of my brothers are Eugene, Wendell, Donald and Delbert. My mother’s father, Helon Henry Tracy and her mother, Nancy Naomi Alexander, were early Mormon Pioneers who knew the prophet Joseph Smith personally and went through all the persecutions of the early church. My grandparents on my father’s side came west to follow the railroad. My mother converted my father to the church before they were married and I do not know anyone who was a stauncher member of the church than my Dad. None of the rest of my father’s family joined the church. After arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, my grandparents settled in Marriott, Utah, a small farming community north and west of Ogden. Both my father and his brother served in World War I. His brother died in England of flu while in the service, leaving behind a young widow and two children. Although my parents met and married in Ogden, when we were still young, my parents decided it would be good to raise their family of boys on a farm. They moved back to Marriot to the place where my mother’s family originally settled. My early elementary and secondary education was in Marriott. (Grades 3 thru 8) Then my parents moved back to Ogden. While I was still in Marriott an interesting thing happened.
