Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No.185: So Endeth the Season BUT FIRST: • Chappell- Hadlee ODI Refusal to call for DRS reviews allowed the Aussies to get off to a great start – 124 opening partnershipbefore Lockie Ferguson forced Warner into a hurried hook. Santner wove a spell and had Finch caught at 145 then only Labuchagne got through to 258/7 after 50 overs. Sadly, our batsmen failed to respond adequately – only Latham looked in good touch – and Australia won by 71 runs. Covid 19 has now caused the cancellation of ODIs 2 and 3 and the three T20s to be played here in NZ. A great shame! • Plunket Shield Auckland 179 and lost to Wellington by an innings & 7 runs. Without Mark Chapman, who broke a thumb in pre match training, the Aces batteng poorly and were totally outplayed. At Colin Maiden Park, Our Ben Horne didn’t have his greatest game – 2 and 6 but took 2 catches ‘keeping. Latest: Wellington has been awarded the Plunket Shield. Last 2 rounds cancelled due to Covid 19. • Hallyburton Johnstone Shield - Grand Final – at Seddon Park, Hamilton Auckland Hearts 322/5 beat Northern Spirit 255/10 by 67 runs Very impressive batting earned the Hearts this win and the Shield. Parnell’s Olivia Lobb, behind the stumps for Northern, took a catch and stumped Arlene Kelly, Hearts’ top scorer with 110. Olivia, opening, also scored a commendable 31 being 2nd out at 85. • National Men’s Provincial A Championship – at Queen’s Park, Invercargill Auckland A 268 and 104/4 drew with Otago A 250 Our Josh Fisher aquitted himself well – batting 9, he scored 19 of 45 whilst at the crease and, bowling, took 3/49 (14.3o 5m) in Otago’s innings. TRAGIC LOSS FOR THE MONEY FAMILY, PAPATOETOE CC STALWARTS: On Saturday morning we learned that 3 members of the Money family had died in a traffic accident. Parnell looked a trifle jaded after the disappointment of the Jeff Crowe Final the previous Sunday. And the Papatoe batsment took advantage – 55 for the first wicket then 120 without further loss. We were patient, however, and our pace attack was rewarded with a major collapse in the middle order. Propects of a total less that 200 were then dashed by Istead and their 261 looked a good total, particularly as neither Ollie Pringle nor Brad Rodden were available for Day 2. Worse still – Flynn McGregor-Sumpter was out in the 2nd over. Ben Rae and Ollie Pringle then, a little nervously, saw us through to stumps – 22/1. DAY 2. First ball - Ben Rae, hit on the pads, raucous and prolonged appeal, umpire hesitant, finally given out - 22/2. A real setback and though we had a buffer of 14 points over 2nd placed Takapuna, a loss here could destroy our chances of taking the Championship. Ben Rainger joined Fanie (now in for Ollie Pringle) who batted forcefully till stumped at 85. Acting Captain Andy, with Ben, put a stop to any nonsence and played exceedingly well to take the game away from Papatoetoe. Half centuries for each came up, the total reached 200 until Ben, surprisingly, lost his wicket with the total 216. Andy carried on but, likewise, he was dismissed 8 short of a well deserved ton. In retrospect, both should have scored 100s but they did make the game safe for us. The lead came up soon after and then a scurry for additional bonus points and good buffer against Takapuna and Cornwall on the Points Table. Over the boundary for 6! Fanie wrested the initiative from Papatoetoe – 44 off 42 balls including 5 fours and two 6s Ben Rainger – an outstanding 69 off 156 ball with 6 fours Andy – a brilliant “captain’s knock” – 92 off 120 balls 12 fours , 4 sixes HEDLEY HOWARTH TROPHY – POINTS at end of play, 14 March: P W L D Bonus Points Total 1. Cornwall, no. 2., plays Papatoetoe and Takapuna, 3rd, plays AUCC. HOPEFULLY WE CAN MAINTAIN, EVEN INCREASE, THIS LEAD AND BRING HOME THE HEDLEY HOWARTH TROPHY COME DOWN TO SHORE ROAD [PLENTY OF OPEN SPACE AND FRESH AIR] AND ENJOY THIS GAME For Howick Pak, and Papatoetoe (playing Cornwall – 2 plays 7), too, much depends on this final round – one will be relegated. And relegation can significantly affect sponsorships and playing strength – promising youngsters, disregarding loyalty, may change to a “top tier” club. And which club will be promoted …………………………..? Thanks go very largely to Giacomo and Dean followed by Eddie who got some return out of the lower order. Cornwall started very much better – 70 for the 1st wicket off 20 overs. But Harry, with his leggies, ripped their innings apart and gave us a substantial 1st innings lead. Will, Quin and Dean then got us to 146/5 and a declaration left Cornwall almost 200 to chase. Whilst Cornwall gave it a bit of a go, wickets fell but only 5. In the end there was no outright either way and the match ended in a draw. Most importantly, we gained 13 points (to go into 2nd place) and Cornwall only 3 - see Points Table below: Points after Round 6, are 1.
