The Bulletin

[email protected] Winter 2017 Vol 18, Issue 4 Page 1 www.merrickjc.org The miracles of Chanukah are well-known. The Chanukah story ends with these miracles, but it begins when a small group of Jews made the decision that they would oppose those who sought to eradicate the foundation stones of Jewish life. Chanukah began not as a war fought for the survival of the Jewish people. No, it was a rebellion of those committed to see Judaism survive. The Maccabees resisted both the Greeks and the Hellenizers of the Jewish people because they would not “let the light go out” of their Jewish identity.

Already in the time of the Talmud the rabbis discussed the placement of the Chanukiya – the menorah. For them where the Chanukiya was placed was of utmost impor- tance. You see they believed that in lighting the menorah it was necessary for it to be visible to outsiders so that Jews and non-Jews alike would see the lights proclaim- ing the miracle of Chanukah in each and every Jewish home.

Placing the Chanukiya near the window of our home is part of our tradition of Chanukah. Those lights symbolize a story which is a precious part of the narrative of the Jewish people. Placing the Chanukiya where it can be seen by passersby sends a powerful message both to those within the home as well as those on the outside. To those outside it states that in this home there is a family for whom the story of Chanukah is a source of pride and inspiration. For those inside those lights are an eight day reminder that the Chanukah lights are a symbol of who we are and of our spiritual connection to one of the timeless and meaningful stories of our people.

So where will you place the menorah this year? How we answer that makes a difference in our lives and in the lives of our children and grandchildren. From the time of our sages 2,000 years ago it was under- stood that the Chanukiya was not to be kept out of sight. Placing it near to a window, our sages felt was a significant expression of a family’s Jewish pride and their commitment to live distinctively as Jews.

How you answer the question I’ve posed is up to you and you alone. Still, as we celebrate this beautiful Festival of Lights I hope that you will join me in displaying your Chanukiya promi- The Bulletin nently and proudly. published quarterly by Merrick Jewish Centre Betty and our family join me in wishing you a CONGREGATION OHR TORAH Chanukah Sameach. 225 Fox Boulevard Merrick, NY 11566 Rabbi Charles Klein Temple Office: (516) 379-8650 Michelle & Michael Schwartz & family Charles A. Since the news of the quarter of a million-dollar matching grant we have rai sed more than a quarter of a millions in additional funds. It’s been exciting to see the gifts coming in by mail, phone, email and website. The gift has been chal- lenging members to dig deeply. Three Years Running Some of you have been following my running exploits over the past 3 years. You’ve seen pictures on Facebook, you’ve seen me limping on a Monday – and many members par- ticipated in my Youth Lounge Fundraiser 80 Mile Marathon last year. It’s hard to believe that my running streak will reach three years at the end of December. What started out as a mile-a-day new year’s resolution way back on 1/1/15, has culminated in completing my 26th marathon a few weeks ago. My events range from 26.2 miles to 100 miles – from 4.5 hours to 28 hours nonstop. Rain – heat – below zero temperatures – blizzards – it’s been challenging. In November I ran the New York City Marathon and had a blast. I found it awesome that the very first thing I did when I arrived at Ft. Wadsworth in Staten Island was to be able to participate in the first of 3 minyan run by an Army Chap- lain, who had set up a tent and brought with him ample siddurim, kippas, tallesim and teffilin. Talk about being able to bring your Jewish identity with you wherever you go! While running it was incredible how many spectators came out to cheer me on. I think I gave “high-fives” to half of Brooklyn. In all my races I’ve met wonderful people along the way who encourage runners from the sidelines or “pull me along” when I can’t bear to take another step. I experience a spirituality when I’m out on the trail – whether it’s just me and the trees or running along a lit path at night – I find that I’m able to “connect” with Judaism in a way that’s sometimes hard to do in the sanctuary. I recommend to everyone to try to find a regular physical activity – something that will get the heart rate up a bit (with medical consent) – and I think you’ll be able to share with me this enhanced ability to be calm and push aside the stress and worries of the day. Worst case scenario – it’s good exercise! So – what’s on my agenda for 2018? As of now, I have an 80 miler in March and a 100 miler in June. There are lots of races to plan for during the other months and many miles to run in-between!

Wishing you and your family and Happy and Healthy Chanukah!

B’Shalom,

Jamey Kohn Administrative Director

Page 13 Here’s Looking at you, Casablanca...

[The film “Casablanca” just celebrated its 75th anniversary, having its initial release on November 26, 1942 at the Hollywood Theatre, with its general release January 23, 1943. AFI ranks the film as the 2nd greatest film of all-time (Citizen Kane was #1). Here is an article examing the Jewish influences on “Casablanca,” originally published February 14, 2014 at algemeiner.com] by Robert Gluck / JNS.org JNS.org – On Feb. 14 each year, many Americans attend screenings of “Casablanca,” rent the movie, or view it in another way for Valentine’s Day. As time goes by, the Jewish influences on the Oscar-winning 1940s romantic film become more apparent.

Jews involved in the production of “Casablanca” in- clude Murray Burnett, the author of the play on which the movie was based, director Michael Curtiz, screen- writers Philip and Julius Epstein and Howard Koch, producer Hal Wallis, composer Max Steiner, and actor Peter Lorre (born László Löwenstein).

“Burnett wrote the play before World War II began,” James Pontuso, author of the book “Political Phi- losophy Comes to Rick’s: Casablanca and American Civic Culture,” tells JNS.org. “This was a warning to Americans about what was happening. According to Charlotte Chandler, author of “Ingrid: Ingrid Bergman, A Personal Biography,” “It’s an inspiring movie.” after her father’s death, Ingrid was sent to live with an aunt, who died of heart disease only six months later.

“She then moved in with her Aunt Hulda and Uncle Otto, who had five children,” Chandler writes. “An- other aunt she visited, Elsa Adler, first told Ingrid, when she was 11, that her mother may have ‘some Jewish blood,’ and that her father was aware of that fact long before they married. But her aunt also cautioned her about telling others about her possi- ble ancestry as ‘there might be some difficult times coming.’”

The ending of “Casablanca”—when Bogart urges Bergman to get on the plane—continues to be a subject of debate. Most critics agree that the ending implies what course should be taken in the difficult times that were coming. Stein says the producers wanted audiences to walk away believing that there is a greater cause than personal satisfaction.

What accounts for the continuing popularity of “Casa- blanca?”

“It captures the American character in many ways,” Pontuso tells JNS.org. “We don’t like being a world power. But who else is going to do it? Because of Hitler we had to take on world responsibilities. We do it, but only because we have to. It’s the greatest American film. It shows we’re willing to fight for the right reasons.” A poster for a screening of Casablanca in Israel, 1950s. Stein says that while viewers enjoy the romance of

by Dr. Yvette Alt Miller / Aish.com

Fans of the hit musical Hamilton have something to celebrate: America’s Library of Congress has announced they are putting hundreds of Hamilton’s letters and other documents online. Those of us who are curious about America’s Founding Father and the first Secretary of the US Treasury can now learn more about Alexander Ham- ilton. One surprise might be Hamilton’s extensive Jewish connections.

“An isle in the Caribbean”

In the musical Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton sings that he was “Born in an isle in the Caribbean / I knew I was poor.” The isle in question was Nevis, “Founding father without a father” a British possession then known for its sugar, tea and cocoa plantations and its slave trade. Page 20 A new book by David Dalin, titled JEWISH JUSTICES OF THE SUPREME COURT: FROM BRANDEIS TO KAGAN, tells the story of the eight Jewish Supreme Court justices. They are, in chronological order: Louis Brandeis, Benjamin Cardozo, Felix Frankfurter, Arthur Goldberg, Abe Fortas, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, and Elena Kagan. There have been several biographies of individual justices, namely Brandeis, Cardozo and Frank- furter, but this is the first book to cover all eight. “There are good stories in the book, which humanize the justices and their Jewish background, and are not included in most of the books written about them’’, said the author, a rabbi and historian, and a Brandeis Un iversity graduate. For instance, Arthur Goldberg’s family recipe for charoset, a Passover staple, written on Supreme Court letterhead, is one of the book’s 38 photos. The story of Jews on the Supreme Court began in January 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson made his historic nomination of Louis Brandeis to become a Justice. The Senate confirmation hearings lasted an unusually long time, four months. It was one of the most contentious Senate hearings in American history. According to author Dalin, much of the opposition was anti-Semitic, including that of Harvard president A. Lawrence Lowell, who later pushed for quotas on Jewish students. Next was Benjamin Cardozo, who joined Brandeis on the Court in 1932. He was nominated by Herbert Hoover, and was the only one of the eight to be nominated by a Republican President. Cardozo was one of the court’s greatest writers and was supported by both Democrats and Republicans. The 350-page book, published appropriately enough by Brandeis University, interweaves the justices’ careers with their connections to Judaism. Brandeis had the least Jewish background of any of the justices, but he was a strong supporter of Zionism. He was instrumental in persuading Woodrow Wilson to support the Bal- four Declaration, and a few times seriously considered resigning from the Supreme Court to devote himself to Zionist activities. Brandeis started the tradition of hiring Jewish law clerks. Frankfurter appointed many Jewish law clerks, and was the first to hire an African-American law clerk, but he could not begin to imagine a woman as a law clerk. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was highly recommended to him; she was a brilliant student. He refused to meet with her or interview her! The past and present achievements of Jewish Supreme Court Justices have hopefully helped to create an environment where it is unlikely that there will be, in the future, strong opposition to a justice simply because of his or her religious or ethnic background.
