2016 Family and Friends Information

Family and Friends Host Hotel – Family and Friends will enjoy an inviting stay at the newly renovated Historic Downtown Holiday Inn Hotel. The hotel is within a short walking distance of the Theater, the venue for the 59th National Finals. Reserve your room(s) by calling 251.694.0100 and requesting a room in the Distinguished Young Women block. Room rates are $119 per night for either a double queen or a king room. Transportation from the – UBER and taxi/shuttle services are available to area hotels from the Mobile Regional Airport. You may contact Transportation Company at mobilebaytransportation.com or 251.476.7711 for information. Car rental agencies are also available at the Mobile Regional Airport. Registration – All guests are required to register, at a cost of $10/guest.* This grants limited access to certain activities where the participants are present. Beginning on Wednesday morning, June 22 and continuing through the day until 4:30pm, family and friends may check in at the Family and Friends Hospitality Suite of the Historic Downtown Holiday Inn Hotel. Any family member or friend of the family may register for the complete package of events or any of the daily packages as detailed below. In order to make the necessary reservations for selected activities and venues, please submit your forms by the registration deadline on Friday, June 3.

*Note: If Family and Friends’ guests register for all four daily packages at a cost of $160 per person, the $10 registration fee will be waived. Program tickets are not included in the cost of the package and must be ordered separately. Full event package registration will include all of the daily packages below - 9 meals, admission to all named local attractions and drinks and snacks in the Hospitality Suite each day. Mardi Gras Museum The highlights Mardi Gras in Mobile - both the regal and raucous sides. The museum boasts 14 galleries and 5 video presentations. Experience royalty in a restored mansion - majestic crowns, scepters, and bejeweled roes. Get rowdy in the Den with a behind the mask view of the street party. Climb aboard a rocking floor and throw beads to a cheering crowd. Youth can become a costumed masker in the Little Mystics Den.

GULFQUEST Interactive Maritime Museum With 90 interactive exhibits, simulators, displays and theaters, GulfQuest is a place you’ll want to visit often. The exhibits are housed on multiple decks of a life-sized replica of a container ship, so come ready to walk and browse and take your time. There are many places to sit and enjoy the view, both inside the museum and outside overlooking the beautiful and the busy of . Bellingrath Gardens Enjoy 65 acres of floral pageantry in a Southern estate garden. Bellingrath Gardens and Home features a 15-room museum home, vast gardens and a bayou boardwalk. The gardens include a bridal garden, a conservatory, a great lawn, a nature walk, an Oriental garden, a rose garden, a chapel, the Mermaid Pool, Mirror Lake, an observation tower, and a riverside pavilion. Dauphin Island Beach Located on the northern shores of the Gulf of Mexico, the sparkling sand and cool surf of Dauphin Island begs one to dip their toes in the sand and enjoy the sun. Boasting beautiful foliage, natural wildlife, plentiful camping sites and some of the best beaches along the Gulf Coast, a day trip to Dauphin Island is truly an event you don’t want to miss. Holiday Isle Condominiums graciously opens its doors to Distinguished Young Women for swimming, dining and a relaxing get-away!

USS Alabama Battleship USS Alabama (BB-60), a South Dakota-class battleship, was the sixth ship of the Navy named after the US state of Alabama. Alabama was commissioned in 1942 and served in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters She was decommissioned in 1947 and assigned to the reserve duty. She was retired in 1962. In 1964, Alabama was taken to Mobile Bay and opened as a museum ship the following year. The ship was added to the National Historic Landmark registry in 1986. Visitors are allowed to view the inside of the main gun turrets and anti-aircraft guns. The powder magazine was opened to the public through some holes that were cut, and stairs put in. The bunk of Major League Baseball Hall of Fame member Bob Feller is marked for those touring. Feller served on Alabama for several years during World War II, serving as Gun Captain by the end of the conflict.

History Museum of Mobile Located in the Old City Hall/ Southern Market in downtown Mobile, the History Museum of Mobile documents the 300-year history of Mobile and the surrounding region. The museum is an educational and entertaining destination for both adults and children. As you explore the museum's galleries, interesting artifacts and fascinating stories will appear around every corner. The museum also boasts audio and interactive exhibits that engage visitors as they learn.

Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center With more than 150 interactive exhibits, thought-provoking larger-than-life IMAX films, and fun, hands-on educational programming, the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center aspires to increase science literacy among the people of south Alabama and the Gulf Coast region, residents and visitors alike.

Historic Fort Conde The current Fort Condé, about 1/3 of the original fort recreated in 4/5-scale, opened on July 4, 1976 as part of Mobile’s United States bicentennial celebration. Fort Condé protected Mobile and its citizens for nearly 100 years from 1723-1820. It was built by the French as a defense against British and Spanish attack on the strategic location of Mobile and its Bay, the eastern most part of the Louisiana colony. The military importance of Mobile and Fort Condé was huge. The fort and town protected access into the strategic lands between the Mississippi River and the Atlantic colonies along the Alabama and Tombigbee Rivers.
