Macomb County Art Institute Authority 2019 Governance Arts Authorities shall have the right to appoint two voting members to serve on the DIA’s Board of Directors. Don Ritzenhein and Lillian Demas retained their appointments to the Detroit Institute of Arts Board of Directors for CY 2019. 1 Free General Admission 61,337 Free General Admissions + 3,576 Admissions to the Detroit Film Theatre = 64,913 Total Macomb County Admissions 2 Student Services and Curriculum Development DIA staff consult with teachers prior to field trips to ensure that students continue to have meaningful, educational experiences that connect to classroom learning. School field trip gallery teachers have expanded the repertoire of hands-on engagement strategies to further enhance all guided experiences The DIA launched two new STEAM adventures, utilizing the Detroit Industry Murals in Rivera Court for grades 5-12 and in collaboration with DIA Conservation scientists in the galleries for grades 6-12. A new guided field trip program was launched in order to support Social-Emotional Learning. This program was designed to meet the SEL needs of schools and make connections between SEL themes and art. The DIA expanded the Meaning Through Art-Making program to accommodate 3rd – 12th graders. DIA studio instructors led learner-centered gallery tours and hands-on artmaking. Teachers from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties met in January, March, and June to advise DIA staff and provide input on professional development workshops and online curriculum resources. There was an intentional focus to engage the Teacher Advisory Group around issues of inclusivity, diversity, equity, and access. In the fall of 2019, three new educators (one from each county) joined the current Teacher Advisory Group cohort for a 2-year term in order to bring new perspectives to the team while allowing experienced TAG teachers to mentor new members. The DIA hosted “Homeschool Afternoons” at the museum in February and June featuring art-making and guided tours. 3 Free Student Field Trips with Bus Transportation The DIA provides free field trips, free transportation and access to K-12 students across Metro Detroit each year. 17,127 Macomb County residents participated in no-cost school field trips to the DIA. Complimentary transportation was provided to all groups. The DIA provides district-wide field trip experiences and teacher support through the following commitments to Macomb County partners: Utica Community Schools – Every 5th grader to visit the DIA to for a field trip focused on indigenous art and culture. L’anse Creuse – Every 3rd, 5th, and 7th grader to visit the museum for field trips that support writing, social studies and science curriculum. Middle school to attend upcoming performances of Diary of Anne Frank. Warren Consolidated – Every 3rd grader to visit the museum for writing support. All ELL (English Language Learners) will also visit the museum Romeo Community Schools – All 5th graders to visit for a VTS field trip, 7th grade for social studies field trip, 8th grade for Diary of Anne Frank performance, and high school students for World Languages field trip. The DIA education team also continues to explore opportunities to support the high school “Career Pathways” program. 4 Professional Development for Teachers 600 Macomb County teachers participated in the following professional development events. Reynolds, author of The Dot Empty Bowls for Educators 5 The DIA provided the following customized professional development days: In January, DIA staff visited Romeo High School for a Visual Thinking Strategies Training / Planning Day and returned in April for a VTS Modeling and Coaching workshop. In February, the DIA hosted Oakland University (Macomb Campus) Preservice Teachers for a tour of the collection and debrief session. In March, the DIA held a Resource Development Workshop at Macomb ISD as part of their New Teachers Academy. The MISD New Teachers Academy visited the DIA in April for an introduction to the field trip options and educational programs. In April, the DIA hosted a VTS workshop focusing on early learners for a group from the Michigan Association for Education of Young Children as part of their "Week of the Young Child" programming. In collaboration with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra the DIA developed Look. Listen. Connect - a multimedia concert combining music with art from the DIA’s collection in April. The program was part of the DSO’s live educational concert series, facilitated by DSO musicians with DIA education programs staff and webcast to classrooms nationwide. In June, the DIA hosted the Macomb Community College Administrators’ Retreat. In August, the DIA hosted the Lake Shore Administration Team Retreat, which featured VTS with a focus on the K12 Positivity Program. Lake Shore Art Teachers were introduced to VTS through a workshop focusing on art vocabulary in August. In August, L'Anse Creuse Administrators met at the DIA. They were provided an education programs overview and VTS/Shaping Identity tours with debrief activities. The DIA hosted meetings with L'Anse Creuse third, fifth, and seventh-grade teachers to discuss curriculum needs and how they relate to Rivera Court, Native American galleries, and the collection of ancient objects. In August, the DIA hosted Social Studies educators from Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Grade-level-appropriate tours were offered, demonstrating how the DIA’s collection can support the Michigan Social Studies curriculum. Opportunities for further professional development were discussed. A three-day VTS workshop for new and experienced teachers was held at Macomb ISD in August. In September, the DIA hosted the MISD Instructional Consultants Meeting, providing VTS and Shaping Identity tours, as well as a debrief of learning experiences and education programs. In October, the DIA hosted Oakland University Preservice Educators and provided an introduction to education programs. Tours focusing on select curricula were included. DIA staff assisted participants in identifying art works that would help meet classroom goals. 6 DIA educators provided a VTS presentation to faculty and student teachers focusing on early childhood at Macomb Community College Center Campus in October. In October, DIA educators visited Macomb ISD to facilitate a VTS coaching workshop for new practitioners in the New Teachers Academy. In November, DIA educators facilitated VTS discussions featuring images that focused on the theme and overarching goals of the Macomb Diversity Summit. Discussions were followed with debriefs that helped students make critical observations about diversity, inclusion, implicit and unconscious bias. The DIA provided a VTS presentation for Macomb Community College faculty at the Center Campus in November. In December, the DIA hosted a workshop featuring VTS training for teachers from Warren Consolidated schools. 7 Senior Program Thursdays at the Museum The DIA’s Thursday’s at the Museum program, provides tri-county residents 55+ with a different museum experience each Thursday of the month including free group transportation and concluding with coffee reception. In 2019, the DIA continued to attract new audiences for the Thursdays at the Museum by broadening the menu of programs. A selection of special offerings is highlighted below: Art Bingo: seniors learned about the DIA’s collection through an art-themed bingo event. America Let’s Exercise: participants enjoyed a local senior dance group and presentation focused on healthy living and exercise habits for older adults. In the Garden: seniors attended a special talk exploring the hidden meanings behind images of flowers, plants, and gardens in some of the DIA’s favorite works of art. Mother’s Day Music: attendees enjoyed a performance featuring jazz, Latin, vocal, contemporary, and classical sounds. Due to the success of these new programs, the DIA will continue to incorporate special offerings alongside the regular rotation of private film screenings, tours of galleries and exhibitions, and hands-on artmaking opportunities. From August through December, 50 interviews were held with Thursdays at the Museum program participants. Results will be analyzed and will impact future program planning. The DIA welcomed 68 senior groups to the museum with more than 2,056 residents participating in Thursday’s at the Museum. All groups were offered complimentary bus transportation.
