Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, July 2, 8 a.m. • Acres: 2,794 • Location: Near Mahogany Grove Campground between Kyle and Lee Canyon • Start Date: June 28th • Cause: Human • Containment: 40% • Personnel: 385

Las Vegas, NV, July 2, 2020 – The Mahogany Fire was quiet overnight, maintaining at 2,794 acres with 40% containment. Additional crews joined the effort to continue to secure and improve anchor points, develop and improve containment lines and mop up hotspots. Air operations will take advantage of cooler temperatures and low winds this morning.

The Department of Transportation has closed State Road 156 at the intersection of State Road 158. This temporary closure is necessary for firefighter and public safety. Fire personnel will be cutting hazardous trees and helicopters will be doing critical bucket work in the area. The closure is intended to be temporary and will reopen when it is safe for the public.

Weather conditions can greatly effect fire behavior so they are closely monitored by fire mangers and firefighters. Today winds will become south to southwest by mid to late morning with speeds increasing to around 10 to15 mph. Afternoon wind gusts are forecast to around 20-25 mph. Relative humidity is expected to fall into the upper teens to mid-20s. Warmer temperatures are expected Friday and Saturday. These factors create near critical fire weather conditions and will remain in place due to expected warmer temperatures and lower relative humidity in the area.

State Routes 157 remains open, but SR 158 remains closed with the additional closure of SR 156.

Fire officials would like to remind the public to keep Unmanned Aircraft Systems, or drones, away from the fire area as they halt aerial firefighting efforts.

Officials also ask the public to remain vigilant over the Fourth of July holiday weekend to do their part to prevent wildfires. Fireworks are illegal on all U.S. Forest Service lands year-round, regardless of weather conditions or holidays.
