N presenting this the second edition of my Address Book to the stamp collectors and dealers of the world it is with mojre assurance, as my firstI edition although very imperfect was a pronounced success. It is impossible for a work of this kind to be perfect, but this is a great improvement on my first edition. The names have been carefully revised and I wish to express my thanks to those who have very kindly revised and corrected my lists in their various localities. The United States list will be found much better than the former edition, and we hope that the third edition will be even better. Those who send $1.00 in advance for a copy of the third edition will be en titled to a 5-line advertisement in the book free.

He had a hard upbringing, under the gaze of a strict father who threatened him with the belt if he caught him backing off from a confrontation. 'I used to run from fights,' he told American writer Peter Heller in 1970. 'And papa would see it from the steps. He'd take his belt, he'd say "All right, me or him?" and I'd go beat the kid: His father worked wherever and whenever he could, in shipyards and factories, sometimes as a welder, sometimes as a carpenter. 'I remember nine dollars a week paychecks,' the youngster recalled. 'Me, my mother, my step-brother, and my father and whatever hangers-on there were...there were always floaters in the family.' Pastrano was an overweight child but, like millions of youngsters at the time, he wanted to be a sports star like baseball's Babe Ruth.

    An Outlaw Practice: Boxing, Governance and Western Law Ian J*M. Warren A Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Human Movement, Performance and Recreation Victoria University 2005 FTS THESIS 344.099 WAR 30001008090740 Warren, Ian J. M An outlaw practice : boxing, governance and western law Abstract This investigation examines the uses of Western law to regulate and at times outlaw the sport of boxing. Drawing on a primary sample of two hundred and one reported judicial decisions canvassing the breadth of recognised legal categories, and an allied range fight lore supporting, opposing or critically reviewing the sport's development since the beginning of the nineteenth century, discernible evolutionary trends in Western law, language and modern sport are identified. Emphasis is placed on prominent intersections between public and private legal rules, their enforcement, paternalism and various evolutionary developments in fight culture in recorded English, New Zealand, United States, Australian and Canadian sources. Fower, governance and regulation are explored alongside pertinent ethical, literary and medical debates spanning two hundred years of Western boxing history. & Acknowledgements and Declaration This has been a very solitary endeavour. Thanks are extended to: The School of HMFR and the PGRU @ VU for complete support throughout; Tanuny Gurvits for her sharing final submission angst: best of sporting luck; Feter Mewett, Bob Petersen, Dr Danielle Tyson & Dr Steve Tudor;

    Talking Pictures TV www.talkingpicturestv.co.uk Highlights for week beginning SKY 328 | FREEVIEW 81 Monday 29th July 2019 FREESAT 306 | VIRGIN 445 64-Day Hero: A Boxer’s Tale on Talking Pictures TV In this compelling and thought-provoking 1985 documentary, sports writer and novelist Gordon Williams uses archive footage, and interviews with family members and friends, to investigate the troubled life of British boxing hero Randolph Turpin, who could deliver a knockout punch with either hand. In 1951, after defeating the American Sugar Ray Robinson, (considered by many to be the greatest boxer of all time), for the title Middleweight Champion of the World, 23-year-old Turpin became a national hero. He held the title for only 64 days before losing a rematch with Robinson. Turpin’s boxing career continued, but a fight against Carl ‘Bobo’ Olsen at Madison Square Gardens left him badly damaged and he began to decline as a fighter. The subsequent years of scandal, bankruptcy and humiliation led to his early death at the age of 38. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001. Affected Men: Agency, Masculinity and the Race Episteme in Caryl Phillips’s Dancing in the Dark and Foreigners This article explores Caryl Phillips’s approaches to narration and characterisation with a specific focus on the “troubled masculinites” he projects in his literary biographies Dancing in the Dark and Foreigners. His male protagonists’ individual striving towards in- dependent, self-governed, successful, or simply dignified lives habitually clashes with the societal ascriptions they experience, and especially with the constraints imposed by a powerful player in their lives: the race episteme. Caryl Phillips has been noted for his construction of complex female voices and experiences (Pulitano 375). Yet, in most of his works, these are juxtaposed with equally challenging male experiences and perspectives, and in some, Phillips has foregroun- ded his focus on “troubled” masculinities, or more specifically, the limitations of black male agency in Western contexts.

    The Commemorative Activity at the Grave of Munich Air Disaster Victim, Duncan Edwards: A Social and Cultural Analysis of the Commemorative Networks of a Local Sporting Hero by Gayle Rogers A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire July 2017 ABSTRACT The Commemorative Activity at the Grave of Munich Air Disaster Victim, Duncan Edwards: A Social and Cultural Analysis of the Commemorative Networks of a Local Sporting Hero The Munich Air Disaster claimed the lives of 23 people in a plane crash in Munich in 1958. It is a significant event within modern England’s cultural history as a number of Manchester United footballers, known as the Busby Babes were amongst the dead. The players who died have continued to be extensively commemorated, especially Duncan Edwards. This research considers the commemorative activity associated with Edwards since his death and was initiated when the researcher pondered the extensive commemorative activity by strangers that she encountered at the family grave of her cousin Edwards. The commemoration of the Disaster and of Edwards has been persistent and various with new acts of commemoration continuing conspicuously even after fifty years since the event. Such unique activity particularly demonstrated at Edwards’ grave was considered worthy of further investigation to ascertain why such activity was occurring at such a volume. Although general historical and biographical accounts of the Disaster and Edwards are apparent, specific research concerning the commemoration of the event was not evident. The researcher set out to identify who the commemorators were, why they were undertaking dedicatory acts and what those acts manifest as.
