AHEAD OF 2022 RE-ELECTION CONTEST, NH SENATOR HASSAN LESS POPULAR THAN COLLEAGUE SHAHEEN By: Sean P. McKinley, M.A. [email protected] Zachary S. Azem, M.A. 603-862-2226 Andrew E. Smith, Ph.D. cola.unh.edu/unh-survey-center DURHAM, NH - Having just been re-elected, Senator is the most popular member of 's congressional delega on. Ahead of a re-elec on ba le in 2022, New Hampshire residents are divided in their opinion of Senator , whose popularity has fallen somewhat. Congressman Chris Pappas is somewhat popular in the First District while Second District residents are divided on their opinion of Congresswoman Ann Kuster.

These findings are based on the latest Granite State Poll*, conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. Two thousand and twenty-five (2,025) Granite State Panel members completed the survey online between January 21 and January 25, 2021. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 2.2 percent. Included in the sample were 980 residents of New Hampshire's First Congressional District (MSE +/- 3.1%) and 1,037 from the Second District (MSE +/- 3.0%). Data were weighted by respondent sex, age, educa on, and region of the state to targets from the most recent American Community Survey (ACS) conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, as well as party registra on levels provided by the NH Secretary of State and 2020 elec on results in NH. Granite State Panel members are recruited from randomly-selected landline and cell phone numbers across New Hampshire and surveys are sent periodically to panel members.

Favorability - Jeanne Shaheen

New Hampshire senior Senator Jeanne Shaheen was comfortably re-elected in November 2020 and con nues to be modestly popular in the state. Currently, 49% of New Hampshire residents have a favorable opinion of Shaheen, 36% have an unfavorable opinion of her, 13% are neutral, and 2% don't know or are unsure. The percent of Granite Staters who have a favorable opinion of Shaheen has stayed between 45% and 55% for most of her me in the Senate.

Shaheen's net favorability ra ng (the percentage with a favorable opinion minus the percentage who have an unfavorable opinion) is +12. Shaheen's net favorability ra ng has remained largely steady since early 2020 but remains slightly lower than it was during most of her first two terms in the Senate. Shaheen is very popular among Democrats (+86) and unpopular among Republicans (-60) while Independents (-3) are neutral.

New Hampshire junior Senator Maggie Hassan, facing a re-elec on ba le in 2022, con nues to lag Shaheen in favorability. Currently, only 41% of New Hampshire residents have a favorable opinion of Hassan, 36% have an unfavorable opinion of her, 19% are neutral, and 4% don't know or are unsure.

Hassan is very popular among Democrats (+74) but is unpopular among Republicans (-59) and somewhat unpopular among Independents (-20).

Favorability - Chris Pappas - First District

Thirty-nine percent of New Hampshire's First Congressional District residents have a favorable opinion of Congressman Chris Pappas, 30% have an unfavorable opinion of him, 24% are neutral, and 7% don't know enough about him to say. Pappas's net favorability ra ng (+9) has increased since December (-3).

Pappas is very popular among Democrats (+72) but is unpopular among Republicans (-46) while Independents (-8) are largely neutral.

Second District Congresswomen Ann Kuster comfortably defeated her Republican challenger in November but her favorability ra ngs remain low in the district. Forty-one percent of New Hampshire's Second Congressional District residents have a favorable opinion of Kuster, 43% have an unfavorable opinion of her, 10% are neutral, and 7% don't know enough about her to say. Kuster's net favorability ra ng (-2) has increased since December (-19) but is lower than it was during much of her previous term in the House of Representa ves.

Kuster is very popular among Democrats (+75) but is very unpopular among Republicans (-76) and somewhat unpopular among Independents (-28) .
