2 14th Annual Conference General Information

Welcome to the 2015 ASPE CONFERENCE

The 14th Annual Conference is here and we are so pleased that Denver has welcomed us in celebration of SP education and methodologies.

The 2015 ASPE Annual Conference is the collective vision of many collaborators and contributors. The exceptional Conference Committee, our ASPE staff, leaders from the field, and you – our dedicated members and conference attendees – have all helped to shape this year’s outstanding program and unique learning experience.

This conference promises to engage you, showcase creative works, stimulate professional development, and provide ongoing opportunities to network and collaborate. In addition to sessions essential to our work—program development, assessment/evaluation, training, feedback, communication—we have presentations on extending SPs into new disciplines, hybrid and mixed modalities, incorporating technology, and certification of the healthcare simulation educator (activities I continue to challenge everyone to do). To ensure that we take care of ourselves along the way, there are sessions on stress relief and relaxation, and—many opportunities to sit down, connect, and network with your peers.

To start it off, Pamela Andreatta, PhD, EdD, MFA, will reflect on the essential role of simulated (standardized) patients in simulation-based clinical education. On Monday, Anne Marie Madziak, Hon B.A. MLIS,will challenge us to reimagine leadership as everybody’s business. Then on Tuesday, Antoine Tesniere, MD, PhD, will give the state of address on virtual simulation.

To deepen your knowledge, I encourage you to take part in the networking and professional development opportunities the conference has to offer. Connect with members of the Board of Directors who are always happy to hear from you. Connect with an ASPE SIG or committee. ASPE has four Special Interest Groups (Hybrid, GTA/MUTA, Interprofessional Education (IPE), and exSPanding our graSP in non-healthcare professions) and nine committees who are seeking new members to help make ASPE an even stronger organization. I also hope you’ll consider getting involved in one of these groups. It’s the best way to stay connected to your colleagues throughout the year and guide ASPE’s future.

With over 100 presentations, you are sure to be inspired. Connect with old and new friends and colleagues and visit the exhibit area to experiment and explore all the great products and resources for our field. This year’s conference offers something for all learning styles, and career levels. We’re delighted you are here! Thank you for your attendance, participation, and commitment to transforming professionals through the power of human simulation.

Sincerely,

Karen (“K”) Lewis, PhD President 3 Things to Do in Denver!

8 14th Annual Conference Welcome to the Conference

A dedicated group of ASPE members who form the Conference Committee has been planning the ASPE 14th Annual Conference at the Denver Marriott City Center, Denver, Colorado, for several months. As The ASPE Bookstore Conference Chair, I’m delighted to share some of the highlights with you! This conference promises to be filled with informative cutting edge sessions for all levels of learners in diverse formats that include workshops, brought to you by the Education and Professional Development Committee presentation discussions, training techniques, posters, oral research reports, snapshot sessions, and much more. There will be invaluable opportunities to interact with vendors and network with new and old colleagues. The book store is also returning this year with all the latest books pertinent to SP methodology. For the first time, we will have an interactive on- line schedule and a conference app that will help you to effortlessly negotiate through the meeting in addition to the printed program. We had a record number of attendees and submissions this year, as well as invited workshops, reflecting the richness and perspectives of SP practice around the world. Sessions are arranged in diverse themes, including: Administration, Advancing Your SPs, Curriculum/Case Development, GTA/MUTA, Hybrid, Interprofessional Education, SP Educator Development, SP Methodology: Applications Beyond Medicine, and Technology. For those of you who are returning from last year, we listened to your feedback! Food and posters are in separate areas and we scheduled a “poster crawl” on Monday, June 15, 1:00 - 2:00 pm. Posters will be presented in small, themed groups, led by facilitators who will guide you through short oral presentations by the authors, followed by questions. We’ve also included more snapshot sessions this year as many of last year’s attendees really liked the diversity and pace of these shorter sessions. Prior to the conference start on Sunday, there will be multiple networking opportunities including an orientation for first time conference attendees and a round robin information session introducing ASPE’s four Special Interest Groups (SIGs) – Hybrid Simulation, Non- Medical/Expanded Uses of SPs, GTA/MUTA and Interprofessional Education. Find out how you can get more involved in ASPE by joining one of these groups! Every committee also welcomes new members. You will have a chance to find out about the various committees at the business meeting luncheon on Tuesday. The conference kicks off with a key note by Pamela Andreatta, “The Essential Role of Simulated (Standardized) Patients in Simulation-Based Clinical Education.” Other plenary sessions feature “Re-Imagining Leadership as Everybody’s Business,” delivered by Anne Marie Madziak, SPs and Virtual Simulation by Antoine Tesniere and Everything ASPE, with reports by our members-at-large and ASPE grant research presentations. Finally, at lunch on Wednesday, we will have a reflective debrief of the conference, featuring ASPE leaders and conference attendees, and a look forward to the next year’s conference in Tampa. We look forward to seeing you in Denver and learning from the vast pool of expertise that is gathered, confident that the scope and understanding of your practice will be expanded and enhanced. This is your conference and we greatly value your feedback as it helps us to improve each year. Electronic surveys will be sent out for your invaluable feedback. I look forward to meeting you!

Best Regards, Cathy Smith, Conference Chair

The Standards of Practice task force has initiated the process to define general principles, knowledge, skills, values and issues that encompass the overall and daily responsibilities of this profession which will serve a range of purposes. Once these practices are drafted and vetted, the committee will begin the process of membership review with activities such as written responses to questions posed on the ASPE website, discussion groups, presentations and written correspondence.
