THE ASCENDING VOICE IV

AN INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM OF SACRED

Malibu, California | May 12-14, 2016 WELCOME!

Pepperdine University proudly welcomes you to The Ascending Voice IV, the fourth international symposium of sacred a cappella music. A decade ago we first conceived of a great gathering of people who love sacred a cappella music. We could not have imagined then that this triennial gathering would appeal to so many people beyond national, ethnic, cultural, and denominational boundaries. Each time we convene we re-experience the great truth: a cappella music is truly universal in its appeal. Of course, all great music has the potential to uplift and entertain; but unaccompanied human voices, when joined together in to express the great themes of Scripture, can inspire the soul unlike anything else. Such music can transform lives, shape movements, and revive communities. Ascending Voice is more than a conference to stimulate the intellect or satisfy the appetite for virtuoso performances, though wonderful lectures, workshops, and concerts will be in abundance. is above all something God calls us to do. So this year’s event is especially focused upon practice. This is the time for singing! Blest be the tie that binds Our hearts in Christian love; The fellowship of kindred minds Is like to that above. Connecting to our theme from Psalm 96:1, Cerulean (our very own - in-residence) and the Festival Choir have programmed a diversity of a cappella sacred from around the world. As we listen, learn, and sing together may our “kindred minds” join together before the fount of every blessing. May our hearts be tuned to sing his grace. And may each one find refreshment of the spirit through conversation, worship, shared meals, and singing. In the words of poet-musician-theologian George Herbert, may divine music be “the way to heaven’s door.” Darryl Tippens, Ryan Board, and N. Lincoln Hanks Directors, The Ascending Voice Symposium

Cerulean

Definition (from oxforddictionaries.com): a deep blue color; azure - from Latin caeruleus, probably from caelum sky

As the resident ensemble of Pepperdine University’s The Ascending Voice, Cerulean is an elite chamber choir of mixed voices whose mission is to discover, rediscover, promote, and celebrate the highest forms of Christian sacred a cappella music. The name connects to the purpose of The Ascending Voice and evokes the notion of voices of praise offered up to the heavens for God’s glory. Working within the parameters of the triennial symposium The Ascending Voice, Cerulean performs high-quality public concerts and serves as a resource to workshop and lecture presentations, singing examples of various a cappella worship styles. Cerulean also advances the cause of new Christian art music by commissioning and performing new sacred a cappella concert works. Cerulean’s members include professional singers, composers, and church musicians from across the U.S. who love sacred a cappella music. Performing a cappella singing at its highest level, Cerulean is especially pleased to include Pepperdine alumni in the ensemble.

TAKE 6 Take 6 is one of the most pioneering and influential contemporary Christian a cappella groups of all time. Six virtuosic voices unite in crystal clear harmony, against a backdrop of syncopated rhythms, innovative arrangements, and funky grooves that bubble into an intoxicating mix of gospel, jazz, R&B, and pop. Praised by such luminaries as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston, the multi-platinum-selling sextet has toured the globe, collaborated across genres, and is recognized as one of the preeminent a cappella groups in the world. Quincy Jones called them the “baddest vocal cats on the planet!” Since their 1988 debut, Take 6 has received 24 Grammy nominations in four genres: gospel, jazz, R&B and pop—winning 10 Grammys in three categories. In addition, they have won 10 Dove Awards, and one Soul Train Award. The group, originating on the campus of Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, is famous for its creative integration of spiritual and inspirational lyrics with R&B and jazz influences. They have collaborated with numerous artists including Ray Charles, Don Henley, Al Jarreau, k.d. lang, Queen Latifah, Stevie Wonder, and many others. Their newest album Believe, which debuted in April, has appeared simultaneously on six Billboard charts. According to the Huffington Post, “If you don’t remember just how successful and influential a cappella group Take 6 is, well, that’s okay. They’re ready to serve a reminder with their new release Believe.”
