Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers set a new record Sunday evening with the hammer price on a very special case of wine, which for four decades has been tucked away in a private wine cellar.

The price for the case containing 12 bottles reached a total of DKK 480,000 (€ 83,600 including buyer’s premium), which is the highest hammer price ever achieved at a wine at Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers. The bottles are certainly not your average vintage, and interested collectors from all over the world joined the round Sunday evening. The expensive drops come from one of the world's most exclusive vineyards, La Tâche in Burgundy, owned by the prestigious vineyard Domaine de la Romanée Conti. The wine was bottled in 1978 and had been stored in a Scandinavian wine cellar since the early 1980s.

"It's rare that even just a single bottle of this type is up for auction. That we could present an entire case of the wine, which in addition has only been owned by one person since its release and has never been opened, is so unique that I don't believe it will ever happen again," says Thomas Rosendahl Andersen, wine specialist at Bruun Rasmussen.

Six-star Review

1978 stands as a monumental vintage for Domaine de la Romanée Conti, and La Tache 1978 is today considered one of Burgundy's finest – and not least most precious – . The quality was undeniable when renowned wine critic Michael Broadbent in 1983 tasted the legendary wine and awarded it one of his rare six-star reviews – a rating that went off the usual five-star scale.
