What is an attention defi cit? Is there such thing as a normal attention span? Those were a couple of questions posed by speaker Michelle Gamble of Sankofa Healing and Enrichment Inc. at a program hosted by NAMI Wakulla on Monday, May 20. Gamble’s presentation was on ADD/ADHD and was entitled “The ho- listic transformation of a ‘curse’ into a bless- ing.” Gamble told of her childhood and how she showed the same classic signs of ADD/ ADHD that are used to diagnose and medicate kids today. “I was always jump- ing from one thing AMANDA MAYOR Michelle Gamble to the next,” she ex- plained. “I was never doing just one thing.” Gamble has been a teacher since 1993. She told of how, after the birth of her fourth child, Gamble was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The diagnoses came after 15 minutes of talking, which Gamble said raised red fl ags in her mind. “I did not accept that diagnosis,” she said. “There was no way this person was going to tell me that and then prescribe strong drugs after only spending 15 minutes talking with me.” She said that the “slump” that she was in which spurred her inclination to seek help in the fi rst place was eventually turned around with diet and exercise. She revealed that each of her fi ve children are at every level of the spectrum in learning curves and processes. “The brain is the part of the body that we know the least about,” Gamble said. “So why are psy- chological opinions the ones that we question the least?” Turn to Page 2 OBITUARIES Mary Helen Ailstock
