Dr. Don Johnson (1973), MD The Ottawa Hospital Dr. Johnson is a 74-year-old Orthopaedic Surgeon retired from academic practice at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa Canada. He grew up the son of a minister in a small nearby town, Kingston Ontario. His father was a Chaplain at the Royal Military College. With this background, he knew that he did not want to be a minister, and enrolled in medicine at Queens University. During his three years of military service he had hoped to learn how to fly planes, or at least parachute out of them. Instead of high adventure in the clouds, he settled for training as a trauma surgeon at the National Defense Medical Center in Ottawa. Just as he was finishing his training Dr. Johnson was invited and did serve as the Team Physician for the Carleton University hockey team. This seed of opportunity kindled the fire of enthusiasm for his professional passion in the field of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He soon was the Team Physician for both the University hockey and football teams, followed soon by the Canadian Olympic teams and finally the professional football and hockey in Ottawa. In this “jock doc” phase of his life, he was consumed with athletics both professionally and personally. He climbed on Mount Everest, completed the Hawaii Ironman competition, swam across the San Francisco Bay from Alcatraz, competed in a 100 mile x-country ski marathon and ran a 100 mile race across the Sierra Nevada mountains while working full-time performing almost a 1000 surgeries a year. It was a busy time of life! Dr. Johnson has been married for 52 years to Carole. For some reason, she has continued to support his various interests, and has managed to run their homes in Canada and Florida. She also was the administrator of their Sports Medicine Clinic, and still finds time to travel with Dr. Johnson around the world for his teaching assignments. Their oldest son, (Michael) is interested in filmmaking and computers. Christopher the middle son sells arthroscopy equipment in Canada, is married to Maria, and they have a wonderful son Ryely. The youngest (Paul), the “great white hope”, an MD, has finished doing a Residency in Family and Sports Medicine in Edmonton. Sue and Paul have 2 adorable daughters, Sarah, and Julia. Needless to say, together they all share a strong interest in sports. Dr. Johnson feels he had a turning point in life when I tumbled off my bicycle during a ride in Florida, severely fracturing my hip. During 12 weeks of recovery he learned to smell the roses. It was then that he developed an interest in computers, digital photography (to photograph the roses), wine, travel and later, golf. They now spend the winter in Florida where he is able to bike, run and paddle in warm weather. In the summer they spend time at their summer home in the Gatineau Hills of . Dr. Johnson had served as President of the Arthroscopy Association of North America in 1995, and continue to be involved in the association. In addition, he has helped to develop the AANA and the Carleton Sports Medicine Clinic web sites. His publications include numerous articles and several CD-ROMs relating to knee surgery both in periodicals and textbooks. Dr. Johnson is quite proud of his latest sports medicine textbook, “Practical Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy”, published by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins. He haspresented papers nationally, and internationally on more than 200 occasions. He was the author and editor of a monthly newsletter “Practical Arthroscopy” that was distributed to arthroscopic surgeons around the world. He provided content for five separate orthopaedic web sites on the Internet, and was a reviewer for the Journal of Arthroscopy, a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. Life is grand and gets better every day. Dr. Johnson’s mission at this stage in his life is to continue to involved in arthroscopic education and to continue to show the way by giving back whenever possible.

The Office of Continuing Professional Development supports the CMA Policy Summary on Physicians and the Pharmaceutical Industry. Among other standards, it is now accepted practice to acknowledge potential conflicts of interest in CME activities. The Office requires that all speakers disclose pertinent relationships they have with commercial organizations. A conflict of interest may exist if a speaker is affiliated with, or has a financial interest in commercial organizations that may have a direct or indirect interest in the subject matter of his/her presentation. A “financial interest” may include but is not limited to, being a shareholder in the organization, or having research or honoraria paid by the organization. An “affiliation” may be holding a position on an advisory committee or some other role of benefit to an organization. The intent of disclosure is not to prevent a speaker with potential conflicts of interest from making a presentation but simply to make these known to the audience. With full disclosure of the pertinent relationships, participants may make their own conclusions about potential bias in presentations. *List complete as of May 6, 2016
