ABOUT GEVA THEATRE CENTER

Geva Theatre Center is your not-for-profit theatre company dedicated to creating and producing professional theatre productions, programs and services of a national standard. As Rochester’s flagship professional theatre, Geva is the most attended regional theatre in State, and one of the 25 most subscribed in the country, serving up to 160,000 patrons annually, including 20,000 students. Founded in 1972 by William Selden and Cynthia Mason Selden, Geva was originally housed in the Rochester Business Institute building on South Clinton Avenue. In 1982, Geva purchased and converted its current space – formerly a NYS Arsenal designed by noted Rochester architect Andrew J Warner and built in 1868 – and opened its new home at the Richard Pine Theatre in March 1985. Geva operates two venues – the 516-seat Elaine P. Wilson Stage and the 180-seat Ron & Donna Fielding Stage. As one of the country’s leading theatre companies and a member of the national League of Resident Theatres, Geva produces a varied contemporary repertoire from musicals to world premieres celebrating the rich tapestry of our diverse community. We draw upon the talents of some of the country’s top actors, directors, designers and writers who are shaping the American Theatre scene. Geva’s education programs serve 20,000 students annually through student matinees, in-school workshops, theatre tours, career day, the acclaimed Summer Academy training program, and opportunities such as the Stage Door Project, which pairs a local school with a production in the Geva season giving students an exclusive look into the entire process of producing a show. Geva has presented approximately 360 play readings and workshops since its inception. Geva’s New Play Development Programming offers new and established writers a nurturing environment from which to take their work to the next level. Programs such as the Festival of New Theatre, Plays in Progress, and Regional and Young Writers Showcases offer writers to have their plays workshopped and performed before an audience in a reading setting. Nearly 70 Geva-developed plays have had subsequent productions around the country. Geva’s nationally- recognized and innovative “Hornets’ Nest” series of play readings uses theatre to facilitate community discussions on contemporary topics. An active member of the Rochester community, Geva offers a multitude of opportunities for our audience and community members to engage with live theatre and the country’s best artists. Since the breadth of Geva’s programming cannot be sustained on ticket sales alone, this contribution to the region’s cultural, social and economic vitality is recognized by grants and charitable contributions from federal, state and local government agencies, national and local foundations, and businesses and individuals from throughout the region. A land acknowledgement creates a more accurate picture of the history of the lands and water- ways we call home and pays respect to the Indigenous People who have stewarded them from time immemorial. At Geva, we offer this statement as part of our anti-racist values and to help us all unlearn and relearn the history that has brought us here to the land we call the United States. With this understanding, we can envision a new path forward, led by the principles of equity and justice. American society as it exists today owes its identity and vitality to generations from around the world who contributed their hopes, dreams and resources to making the history that led to this moment. Some were stolen and enslaved here against their will, some were drawn to leave their distant homes in search of a better life, and some have stewarded this land for more generations than can be counted. Acknowledging the hardships and atrocities that many peoples have suf- fered on American soil is critical to building mutual respect and connection across all barriers of heritage and difference. By honoring this truth, we begin this effort to acknowledge what has been purposefully buried. There are 567 federally recognized Indian Nations (variously called tribes, nations, bands, pueb- los, communities and Native villages) in the United States. Additionally, there are tribes located throughout the United States who are recognized by their respective state governments.

Geva’s Acknowledgment We are gathered in the ancestral and unceded territory of the O-non-dowa-gah, (pronounced: oh-n’own-dough-wahgah) or “the people of the Great Hill.” In English, they are known as Sen- eca people, “the keeper of the western door.” Together, with the Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, and Tuscarora, the Seneca make up the sovereign Haudenosaunee (ho-dee-no-SHO- nee) Confederacy. We pay respects to their elders, past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of violence, displacement, genocide and migration that bring us together here today. And please join us in uncovering such truths at any and all public events. 5 MESSAGEMESSAGE FROM FROM GEVA'S GEVA'S EXECUTIVEEXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP LEADERSHIP

THANK YOU Through the last seven months, all of us have been battered and bruised by this global pandemic and devastating national events. Almost all of us have either been directly affected or know some- one who has been directly affected. To get through it we have relied upon friends and family for solace, encouragement and connectivity. What would we do if not for these lifelines? For Geva, you are our lifeline. Our relationship with you means everything to us, and as we try to navigate through these challenging and changing times we want to express our deepest gratitude to you for staying with us; for showing up. It’s not easy right now for anyone to make a commit- ment – who knows what the future will bring? – so by taking this leap into our reimagined season you’ve given us the confidence to keep the creative fires burning as we plan for an eventual return to in-person productions. A non-profit arts institution has a legal obligation to provide a public service. The pandemic shut- down has prohibited us from inviting audiences into our facility, but we have been of service to Rochesterians by having our lobby rest rooms available during peaceful protests, in coordination with the protest organizers. We believe in peaceful protests, and our stock-in-trade is empathy. We have also worked with the County Board of Elections to utilize Geva as a polling place on November 3rd. The theatre is a place of unity, and we are trying to do our civic part to make our community more equitable for all. No doubt that there will be more changes and challenges in the months ahead. The uncertainty of how the pandemic will continue to affect public health, and our financial viability, can be overwhelm- ing. Knowing that you are still with us, we will continue to work hard every day to make theatrical magic in whatever shape possible. If you’d like to make a donation to Geva, please click here. If you’d like to make a comment or ask us a question, you can use our community conversation email address: [email protected]

Thank You and Take Care,

Mark Cuddy Christopher Mannelli Artistic Director Executive Director

6 2020-2021 Season Thank You This year, we’ve seen just how much Geva Theatre Center means to Rochester, and how much Rochester means to all of us.

Geva volunteers gave over 15,000 hours of their time during the 2019-2020 season.

Around 3,100 households donated their ticket values after we shut down in March.

More than 350 people made their first gift to Geva in the past year.

Geva is so much more than a show or a season. It’s all of us, together. The future of live theatre, made with and for our vibrant Rochester community, is beautiful and bright.

We can’t thank you enough for being part of our Geva family.

“What’s that? ‘Ah.’ Like you got me all figured out now? You solved the big mystery of how someone like me can even exist in the same universe as fancy Mr. Farraday? You might have had a disparaging thought once you read the word, “escort.” Yet, playwright Chisa Hutchinson is quick to assure, “I know, I know, but this ain’t that, not an [Law and Order] SVU cameo, you know?” But do we know? Or, are we quick to put Sugar into a familiar stereotypical box of indifference? In all of her work, Hutchinson strives to open and unpack weighty matters: social injustice, racial discord, systemic oppression, medi- cal ethics, and more. If you are squeamish Playwright Chisa Hutchinson or concerned about how much challenging material you can handle during these class sessions—have no fear. Hutchinson is adept at dealing with difficult topics without harsh accusations. “Despite dealing with the heavy subject matter, the plays are actually still pretty funny. I hope.” In the style of surreal satire, Hutchinson proffers both socio-political grit and guffaw. She acts as a “Virgil” persona, guiding us through the minefield of our preconceived notions, assumptions, or initial presumptions of a person’s value or worth. In Scene Three, of The Bleeding Class, Dr. Wesley Pennington dissuades Sugar from leaving, stating, “You’re too valuable.”

SUGAR: I am? DR. PENNINGTON: I... think you could be, yes. SUGAR: I could be valuable? I could be valuable, but liiiiike what, the jury’s still out?

16 2020-2021 Season WHO'S WHO

Yes, the jury is still out as Dr. Pennington, other characters, and we—the audience— wrestle with the quandary of Sugar’s worth. Does she hold value as a human? Or is her worth connected only to the potential service she can provide? Her value becomes mon- etized by those who seek to take advantage of her. In this context, Sugar brings to mind Mrs. Henrietta Lacks and countless others who have been exploited for medical gain. When asked if Henrietta Lacks came to mind while writing The Bleeding Class, Hutchinson responded, “Yes,” throughout the process. Mrs. Lacks was a young mother of five who went to Baltimore’s John Hopkins Hospital complaining of vaginal bleeding in 1951. Unbeknownst to her, a sample of her cells re- trieved during a biopsy was sent to prominent cancer and virus researcher, Dr. George Gey. He discovered that her cells were unlike any he had ever seen. Her cells were unique because they did not die during testing; they doubled every 20 to 24 hours. And Henrietta Lacks’ cells—now called the HeLa line—are used to this day. Because of her, doctors can study the effects of toxins, drugs, hormones, and viruses on cancer cells’ growth without experimenting on humans. All this, yet, no one shared these findings with Mrs. Lacks or her family until 1975, more than two decades after Mrs. Lacks’ death. U.S. history is rife with painful examples of Black Americans being used as “guinea pigs” in medical experiments. In addition to Henrietta Lacks, Chisa Hutchinson cites three other ex- amples relevant to The Bleeding Class, including Sara “Saartje” Baartman, whom promoters nicknamed the “Hottentot Venus” as well as the enslaved women, Lucy, Anarcha, Betsey, and those forgotten women who were forced to endure the tortures of J. Marion Sims, the “father of modern gynecology.” And we must remember the notorious Tuskegee Syphilis Study, in which approximately 600 Black men were intentionally infected with Syphilis and left untreated by the U.S. Public Health Service so it could study the progression of the disease. It takes no great leap of imagination to understand The Bleeding Class’ salient relevance. Even as our current president shows a willingness to expose even his closest associates and the general public at large, this play hits incredibly close to home. All one has to do is look at the frenzied race to find a reliable coronavirus vaccine. However, Hutchinson did not write this play during the pandemic—she came up with the idea last year: “I was thinking, ‘Oh, what a crazy idea if there were a virus ravaging the world with everyone in their own space, fearful of one another.’ And then I started writing it. [I thought] what if the people who saved us…were Black and Brown people? And we’d explore their humanity while they work the case of the mysterious virus. That was the idea behind it. And then it be- came a whole other thing, once it actually started happening in real life.”

www.GevaTheatre.org 17 Ahead of the game, Hutchinson’s subject matter is not only on point; it is before the point, and at times leaves audiences with an eerie sense of what’s to come. With this gift, she embod- ies the role of artist as seer, predicting our future, whether we like it or not. She also has a sharp-edged ear for dialogue and creates characters who, like Sugar, have an impish sense of humor and a willingness to boldly speak truth to power. Said Hutchinson: “I very much gravitate towards loud, outspoken sort of emotionally flat- footed people. I love people who you know exactly where you stand with them at all times because they just cannot hide who they are. They’re always true to themselves, no matter what the situation is, you know, and they will always tell the truth of themselves to you. And I really, I admire people like that who just have nothing to hide. [While working on the play,] I thought, What a gift to have someone like Sugar be involved in this process. Someone so generous with herself already, like not just physically, because she’s a [prostitute], but generous with [all of] herself in that she’s really has no secrets. She’s very open. And having someone like that volunteer herself...I think it just felt right that it needed to be heard somewhere in my career.” Sugar’s motivation to be a part of the medical experiment stems from a place of altruism, a belief that she has something to contribute to the world. It’s the philosophy of Ubuntu, which, as described by Mpho Tutu van Furth, “[In] very broad terms is an ethic of interdependence. It’s an ethic that recognizes that everything that I do has an effect on you and your well-being. And everything that you do has an effect on me and my well-being. Although we are different people, we are essentially interconnected. And that is a truth that is not limited to Africa or South Africa. It’s a truth that is universal.” If one recognizes and embodies Ubuntu’s truth, like Sugar, there is a generous willingness to acknowledge that we are all connected, and to act on that connection. What will you learn— about Sugar, or maybe even yourself—in The Bleeding Class(room)?
