6 Broad Objective For the LHRC to be able to forge its way in the realization of its mission, it has a broad objective of creating legal and human rights awareness and empowerment among the general public and, in particular, the underprivileged sections of the society through legal and civic education, advocacy, research, follow up of human rights abuses and provision of legal aid.

Target Group (s) By its nature, LHRC programmes and services are wider in scope to benefit the public including the right holders, duty bearers, vulnerable groups, and victims of human rights violation, lawmakers, civil society organizations and the public. Through direct program interventions such as paralegal training, Village legal Workers Training and Human Rights monitors, LHRC has a good link with communities at the grassroots level which ensures that its work has an impact at the national level and community level.

LHRC’s Key Stakeholders Apart from directing its efforts to the public, Legal and Human Rights Centre collaborates with a diverse number of stakeholders who serve as boundary partners in trying to accomplish its mission and programmes in Tanzania. These include government ministries, departments, and agencies. Others are development partners, United Nations Agencies, Civil Society Organizations; Faith-based organizations, academia, research, and training institutions. Another important group include the media houses, networks, paralegals, human rights monitors, trade unions and the private sector.

Identity & Values Since its establishment LHRC has been governed by key values which include Integrity, Accountability, Professionalism, Transparency, Equality, Diversity, Voluntarism and Volunteerism. These values and stance enable the LHRC to engage authentically, assertively, and courageously with both government and partners of every ilk. They enable a vigorous and creative engagement with the LHRC’s constituencies to educate, influence, challenge, and share; and enable them to be assertive of their rights.

7 OUR PRODUCTS In the course of its work over years, LHRC has developed several products to facilitate its interventions and implementation of its programs.

1. Tanzania Human Rights Report - Annually produced report to depict human rights situation in Tanzania. The report has been published for 18 years since 2002 2. Tanzania Human Rights and Business Report - Annually produced report to depict the situation of human rights and business in Tanzania. The report has been published for 9 years since 2012 3. Mlinzi wa Haki Newsletter - A newsletter on human rights developments and LHRC work produced in quarterly basis 4. Haki Kiganjani – is an automated digital system for reporting human rights violations in the country, member of the public can send in the incidences through SMS, Mobile App and web portal. 5. Haki TV - Online TV which seeks to promote human rights awareness among Tanzanians 6. Majimaji Awards - Awards prepared and presented by LHRC to outstanding human rights activist in Tanzania. The award was launched in 2005 and Is Issued after every 5 years. 7. Katiba Database – an Online resource hub for constitutional related materials and constitutionalism in Tanzania.

LHRC’S STRATEGIC DIRECTION The overall goal of LHRC work is to contribute to an improved state of human rights in Tanzania. We hope to do this through five interrelated strategic objectives, four of which address human rights issues in the general population, and one that addresses LHRC’s continued effectiveness to execute its mandate.

The LHRC interventions in the period of 2019-2024 focus on the three major thematic areas that are; ++ Civil and Political Rights ++ Socio-economic and environmental Rights ++ Collective Rights including Rights of Women, Children, and Persons with Disabilities

WHAT IS LHRC DOING TO CELEBRATE ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY? The Legal and Human Rights Centre (LHRC) is pleased to host a series of events to mark 25 years of operation and success since its establishment on September 26, 1995. The event aims to commemorate and recognize the efforts by different state and non-state actors in promoting and safeguarding human rights in Tanzania, celebrate human rights defenders and champions. Through this event LHRC will evaluate its implementation over the past two decades and look forward to its continuing programs and approaches in upholding the collective and individual rights of the people in Tanzania.

9 Specific objectives ++ To celebrate the milestones achieved in human rights development in Tanzania ++ To enhance awareness and understanding of the role of LHRC in promoting Human Rights in Tanzania ++ To strengthen partnership and create synergies with stakeholders including government, development partners and other non-state actors

To commemorate its 25th year of operation, LHRC has prepared a series of events involving members of the public, development partners and government officials. Activities aim to showcase impact of our work and sharing milestones made so far.

The commemoration is accompanied with the following major activities:

Exhibitions: LHRC has strategically coordinated its directorates to showcase activities undertaken under each directorate. LHRC has invited its community partners i.e. paralegals, human rights monitors, and human rights clubs to showcase the impact they are making in their constituencies. Invited Guest will be able to learn more about our work and achievements so far.

Campaign: In September 26, 2019 LHRC launched media campaign to help breakdown the objectives of the commemoration to the targeted audience. The campaign has been running for a year disseminating content of all expected events through both traditional and digital media.

Testimonials from beneficiaries: LHRC has documented stories from her beneficiaries over the past two decades. The aim is to showcase the work that LHRC has been doing and how it has impacted people’s life socially, economically, and even politically. LHRC through its various programs and interventions including the provision of legal aid has been able to help the most marginalized people in various communities to access justice systems and seek remedies for their rights which had been infringed. These stories will help to motivate other community members to fight for their rights.

Panel Discussions: LHRC has invited its founders, former directors and beneficiaries to participate in a panel discussion. The focus of the panel will be to review the success and challenges in safeguarding the state of human rights in Tanzania and the role of both state and non-state

10 actors. Outcomes of the discussion will be used by LHRC to further refine and implement its strategies in the promotion and protection of human rights in the country.

The Celebration: This day brings together various actors both state and non-state to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Legal and Human Rights Centre. The celebration is recognising and appreciating people who have contributed to the establishment of the organization and those who have worked with LHRC to further the human rights cause in Tanzania.

LHRC KEY MILESTONES 1. Enhanced access to justice in Tanzania through legal aid provision. 2. Increased response to human rights violations through research and documentation. 3. Enhanced awareness on human rights and rule of law through mass education programs. 4. Improved legal and policy framework through advocacy and strategic litigation/public interest case. 5. Increased legal empowerment and social accountability. 6. Increased corporate accountability and access to remedy. 7. Increased protection and promotion of rights of vulnerable groups 8. Fostered accountability among duty bearers. 9. Contributed to the establishment of justice administration institutions. 10. Coordinated constitutional making process and campaigns for the people centred constitution making process. 11. Improved democratic processes in Tanzania through civic education and observation of election processes. 12. Production of the Tanzania Human Rights Report and Human Rights and Business. 13. Contributed to the ratification and domestication of international and regional instruments .
