11 two years of varsity baseball; and HJ848 12 WHEREAS, Johnny Oates signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles and, during an 11-year major 13 league career, played with the Orioles, , , , and 14 ; and 15 WHEREAS, while with the Dodgers, Johnny Oates played in two (1977 and 1978); and 16 WHEREAS, Johnny Oates experienced his greatest success in baseball as a major league manager, 17 leading the Baltimore Orioles for four seasons and earning the 1993 Manager of the 18 Year award from magazine; and 19 WHEREAS, from 1995 to 2001, Johnny Oates managed the Texas Rangers, leading them to the only 20 three division titles in team history in 1996, 1998, and 1999 and earning the 1996 American League 21 Manager of the Year award from both the BWAA and Sporting News; and 22 WHEREAS, inducted into the Halls of Fame of the , Jackson County North 23 Carolina, Roanoke-Salem Baseball, Virginia Sports, and Texas Rangers, Johnny Oates retired on May 4, 24 2001, with a career managerial record of 797-746; and

0:51 25 WHEREAS, a member of the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame, Johnny Oates was honored in 26 2001 by having his number 15 retired, the first and only baseball number ever retired at Virginia Tech; 27 and

3/25/10 28 WHEREAS, a talented and versatile athlete, a popular and successful , and a dedicated and 29 loving family man, Johnny Oates is missed by his close-knit family, by his countless friends in the 30 community, and by baseball fans across the country; now, therefore, be it 31 RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby 32 note with great sadness the loss of an outstanding Virginian, Johnny Lane Oates; and, be it 33 RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution 34 for presentation to the family of Johnny Lane Oates as an expression of the great respect in which his 35 memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
