Sadleir, Trollope 3; Tinker 2168. Provenance: Henry G. Burke, noted collector from Baltimore (bookplate). Trollope’s Third Novel in Cloth First edition, first issue, in original cloth of Trollope’s third novel. The first issue is distinguished by the absence of any mention of Trollope’s previous works on the title-page. Sadleir notes bindings of both half cloth and boards and full cloth, as here, with no priority given. Extremely scarce in the original cloth; only 500 copies were printed of this tale set of the Royalist Vandean uprising following the execution of Louis XVI. Trollope, who had no direct knowledge of the Vendée region, relied on Walter Scott’s translation of The Memoires of the Marquise de la Rochejaquelin. The novel sold poorly and a portion of the original print run was remaindered and bound in one volume. La Vendée was the last of Trollope’s early failures, following his two Irish-themed novels, before he would find his muse in provincial England. sold [312530]

Sadleir-Parrish Copy First edition in publisher’s cloth of a novel almost always found rebound or heavily restored, with remarkable provenance from the collections of Trollope bibliographer Michael Sadleir and collector Morris Parrish. Sadleir comments on the novel’s rarity in cloth: “Barchester Towers had the same printing number and publisher as The Warden. But it was a three-volume books, sold at 31. 6d., and reached a public larger than that of the coteries. In consequence it was more frequently borrowed from the libraries and less frequently bought outright; also it was more thoroughly and destructively read.” $10,000 [312531]

In recounting the dinner — where he also met Thackeray and John Everett Millais — Trollope describes Taylor thus: “Charles Taylor (Sir) — than whom in latter life I have loved no man better.” sold
