De Profundis Oscar Wilde (1897) DE PROFUNDIS OSCAR WILDE (1897) INTRODUCTION1 De Profundis (Latin: "from the depths") is a letter written by Oscar Wilde during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol (Berkshire, England), to "Bosie" (Lord Alfred Douglas, son of the Marquess of Queensberry). During its first half Wilde recounts their previous relationship and extravagant lifestyle which eventually led to Wilde's conviction and imprisonment for “gross indecency.” He indicts both Lord Alfred's vanity and his own weakness in acceding to those wishes. In the second half, Wilde charts his spiritual development in prison and identification with Jesus Christ, whom he characterizes as a romantic, individualist artist. Wilde wrote the letter between January and March 1897, close to the end of his imprisonment. Contact had lapsed between Douglas and Wilde and the latter had suffered from his close supervision, physical labor and emotional isolation. Nelson, the new prison governor, thought that writing might be more cathartic than prison labor. He was not allowed to send the long letter which he was allowed to write "for medicinal purposes"; each page was taken away when completed, and only at the end could he read it over and make revisions. Nelson gave the long letter to him on his release on 18 May 1897. Wilde entrusted the manuscript to the journalist Robert Ross (an ex-lover, and rival to "Bosie"). Ross published the letter in 1905, five years after Wilde's death, giving it the title De Profundis from Psalm 130. THE TRIAL In 1891 Wilde began an intimate friendship with Lord Alfred Douglas (Wilde was 41; Douglas, 21), a young, vain aristocrat. As the two grew closer, family and friends on both sides urged Wilde and Douglas to lessen their contact. Lord Alfred's father, the Marquess of Queensberry, often feuded with his son over the topic. Especially after the suicide death of his eldest son, the Viscount Drumlanrig, Queensberry privately accused them of improper acts and threatened to cut off Lord Alfred's allowance. When they refused, he began publicly harassing Wilde. In early 1895 Wilde had reached the height of his fame and success with his plays An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Earnest on stage in London. When 1 Wikipedia contributors. Wilde returned from holidays after the premieres, he found Queensberry's card at his club with the inscription: "For Oscar Wilde, posing somdomite [sic]". Unable to bear further insults and encouraged by Lord Alfred (who wanted to attack his father in every possible way), Wilde sued Queensberry for criminal libel. Wilde withdrew his claim as the defence began but the Judge deemed that Queensberry's accusation was justified. The Crown promptly issued a warrant for his arrest and he was charged with gross indecency with other men under the Labouchere Amendment in April 1895. The trial was the centre of public discussion as details of Wilde's consorts from the working class became known. Wilde refused to admit wrongdoing and the jury were unable to reach a verdict. At the retrial Wilde was sentenced to two years' imprisonment, to be held to hard labour.[3] IMPRISONMENT He was imprisoned in Pentonville, Wandsworth, and Reading Prisons, where the poor food, manual labour, and harsh conditions greatly weakened his health. He quickly began suffering from hunger, insomnia, and disease. He was visited in Pentonville by R.B.S Haldane, a liberal, reforming MP whom he had known before. Haldane championed his case and arranged for access to religious, educational, and historical books. Whilst in Wandsworth Wilde collapsed in the Chapel and burst his right ear drum, an injury that would later contribute to his death. He spent two months recovering in the infirmary. Friends arranged for him to be transferred to Reading Prison, where he was prescribed lighter duties and allowed to spend some time reading but not writing. Depressed, he was unable to complete even these duties, and under Colonel Isaacson, the strict Warden of Reading Prison, Wilde became trapped in a series of harsh punishments for trivial offences. The failure to complete them led to renewed sanction. Wilde, who still loved Lord Alfred, became upset as contact from him became rare, then annoyed when he learned that the latter planned to publish Wilde's letters without permission and dedicate poems to him unasked. He wrote to friends immediately, forbidding the former and refusing the latter. Wilde still maintained his belief that the Queensberrys owed him a debt of honour arising from his bankruptcy trial. Wilde's friends continued pressing for better conditions and, in 1897, Major Nelson, a man of a more progressive mind, replaced Col. Isaacson as Warden. He quickly visited Wilde and offered him a book from his personal library, the sympathy bringing Wilde to tears. Soon Wilde requested lists of books, returning to Ancient Greek poets and Christian theology, and studying modern Italian and German, though it was Dante's Inferno that held his attention. Wilde was granted official permission to have writing materials in early 1897, but even then under strict control: he could write to his friends and his solicitor, but only one page at a time. Wilde decided to write a letter to Douglas, and in it discuss the last five years they had spent together, creating an autobiography of sorts. Wilde spent January, February, and March 1897 writing his letter. Textual analysis of the manuscript shows that Nelson probably relaxed the stringent rules, allowing Wilde to see the papers together: three of the sheets are of relatively fair copy, suggesting they were entirely re-written, and most do not end with a full-stop. Wilde requested that he might send the letter to Lord Alfred Douglas or Robert Ross, which the Home Office denied, but he was permitted to take it with him on release .Wilde never revised the work after he left prison. Suffering is one very long moment. We cannot divide it by seasons. We can only record its moods, and chronicle their return. With us time itself does not progress. It revolves. It seems to circle round one centre of pain. The paralysing immobility of a life every circumstance of which is regulated after an unchangeable pattern, so that we eat and drink and lie down and pray, or kneel at least for prayer, according to the inflexible laws of an iron formula: this immobile quality, that makes each dreadful day in the very minutest detail like its brother, seems to communicate itself to those external forces the very essence of whose existence is ceaseless change. Of seed-time or harvest, of the reapers bending over the corn, or the grape gatherers threading through the vines, of the grass in the orchard made white with broken blossoms or strewn with fallen fruit: of these we know nothing and can know nothing. For us there is only one season, the season of sorrow. The very sun and moon seem taken from us. Outside, the day may be blue and gold, but the light that creeps down through the thickly-muffled glass of the small iron-barred window beneath which one sits is grey and niggard. It is always twilight in one’s cell, as it is always twilight in one’s heart. And in the sphere of thought, no less than in the sphere of time, motion is no more. The thing that you personally have long ago forgotten, or can easily forget, is happening to me now, and will happen to me again to-morrow. Remember this, and you will be able to understand a little of why I am writing, and in this manner writing. ***2 Prosperity, pleasure and success, may be rough of grain and common in fibre, but sorrow is the most sensitive of all created things. There is nothing that stirs in the whole world of thought to which sorrow does not vibrate in terrible and exquisite pulsation. The thin beaten-out leaf of tremulous gold that chronicles the direction of forces the eye cannot see is in comparison coarse. It is a wound that bleeds when any hand but that of love touches it, and even then must bleed again, though not in pain. Where there is sorrow there is holy ground. Some day people will realise what that means. They will know nothing of life till they do,—and natures like his can realise it. When I was brought down from my prison to the Court of Bankruptcy, between two policemen,—waited in the long dreary corridor that, before the whole crowd, whom an action so sweet and simple hushed into silence, he might gravely raise his hat to me, as, handcuffed and with bowed head, I passed him by. Men have gone to heaven for smaller things than that. It was in this spirit, and with this mode of love, that the saints knelt down to wash the feet of the poor, or stooped to kiss the leper on the cheek. I have never said one single word to him about what he did. I do not know to the present moment whether he is aware that I was even conscious of his action. It is not a thing for which one can render formal thanks in formal words. I store it in the treasure-house of my heart. I keep it there as a secret debt that I am glad to think I can never possibly repay. It is embalmed and kept sweet by the myrrh and cassia of many tears. When wisdom has been profitless to me, philosophy barren, and the proverbs and phrases of those who have sought to give me consolation as dust and ashes in my mouth, the memory of that little, lovely, silent act of love has unsealed for me all the wells of pity: made the desert blossom like a rose, and brought me out of the 2 *** indicates the omission of text.

    33 The Poetry That Dare Not Speak Its Name: Modernist Aesthetic in the Case of Lord Alfred Douglas and Marie Carmichael Stopes Christina Hauck Kansas State University An improbable friendship sprang up in 1938 when one “Mrs Carmi- chael,” representing herself as a young mother, wrote Lord Alfred Douglas to show him a sonnet and ask his advice about publishing it. Little realizing that he was entering into correspondence with the notorious birth control advocate, Marie Carmichael Stopes, the staunchly Catholic Douglas wrote back kindly, calling Mrs. Carmichael a “pleasant poet” and lamenting his own difficulties publishing (Hall 282). If Douglas didn’t understand quite whom he was writing to, Stopes herself, rabidly homophobic and anti-Catholic, must have: Douglas’s claim to fame lay less in his poetry, whose quality critics debated fiercely when they bothered to read it at all, but in his having been a central actor in the events leading up to Oscar Wilde’s trial and imprisonment.1 By the time the correspondence had be- gun, Douglas had long converted to Catholicism and was admitting only to limited homosexual activities over a limited period, with Wilde or any- one else; Stopes apparently believed him.2 After several months, Stopes revealed her “true” identity. Douglas, understandably, was nervous. In a letter to George Bernard Shaw, he writes: I am fated to make friends with my enemies. For the last three months I have been corresponding with a lady who wrote about my poetry and poetry in general. She expressed great admira- tion for me as a poet.

Obtaining and studying any one of his three operas should be important for establishing him as more than a popular-music composer. Levant's opera Carnival, from the 20th Century Fox movie Charlie Chan at the Opera, is especially worthy of consideration. Through careful analysis of this work, much can be learned about the style and interests of Oscar Levant. While comparisons to other composers and their works may be too extensive for this specific paper, some comparisons to Levant's own popular tunes of the same time period as Carnival may reveal remarkable similarities and/or differences. Along with an analysis of the score, observation of the opera as it is presented in the movie will provide information about the basis for its content and reveal its incorporation into the movie's plot. In addition, seeing the movie will give aural information, such as the types of instruments used. The interest in this topic stems from Oscar Levant's own books­ A Smattering of Ignorance, The Unimportance of Being Oscar, and The Memoirs of an Amnesiac. He refers to this opera in A Smattering of Ignorance. but his references to his musical acquaintances in The Memoirs of an Amnesiac may supply additional facts to help in understanding his musical style.     Dixon 1 The late 19 th century was an exceptional time for literature in both Europe and the Americas. Arguably, some of the greatest minds in the history of Western literature actively published during this period. Twain, Melville, Dickens, Verne, Wilde and many others were widely circulated among both literary factions and laypersons. Through their fiction, their collective reach was enormous. For most of these writers, their fictive works have eclipsed their personal lives. Until recently, historians have focused only on these writers’ contributions to literature, rather than their intriguing personal histories as a whole. With the emergence of new types of historical inquiry, the study of literary figures has begun a paradigm shift toward examining the impact of their entire lives, rather than simply their works. In following that trend, this study will shine a unique light on not only the works, but also the life of one of the 19 th century’s most controversial authors: Oscar Wilde. Wilde saw himself as a brilliant Aesthetic artist, proclaiming during his 1882 American book tour, “I have nothing to declare but my genius.” 1 Early in his career the Victorian public viewed Wilde as an eccentric Aesthete whose plays delighted but often left the public feeling somewhat left out. Later, as Wilde’s now infamous trial approached, the public formed new ideas about homosexuality and began to develop tropes out of the mannerisms and dress of the Aesthetic movement to which Wilde belonged. H. Smith, but there is no doubt that this did not happen. The letter sent to Wilde by the publisher strongly indicates that W. H. Smith contemplated removing the July issue of Lippincott’s Magazine, but does not go so far as to say that the bookstore did. This letter is the only evidence, however, that this is not absolute. The refusal to sell is mere speculation. The fact that none of Wilde’s contemporaries mentioned the incident of The Picture of Dorian Gray that supposedly happened, while the boycott of George Moore’s Esther Waters, which was much less topical than this one, was widely reported and discussed, provides further evidence that Wilde’s work was not rejected. Given that the censorship of literary works by private enterprises was still topical in the 1890s, it is unbelievable that the rejection of Wilde’s novel would not have been covered by any newspaper. It makes no sense, except to think that such a thing did not exist at all. It is also clear that this was not the case in the 1895 Wilde trial. Wilde’s lawyer argued that the piece was not a social evil because it was sold uninterruptedly, and the other side, which would have liked to take advantage of it in any way, never once touched on the boycott.

Elliptical Thinking: Planetary Patterns of Thought in De Profundis Amelia Hall Cornell University In an 1881 letter asking a friend to meet his mother, Oscar Wilde writes: ‘all brilliant people should cross each other’s cycles, like some of the nicest planets’.1 In comparing the people in his social circle to celestial bodies in orbit, Wilde sets forth an idea that will soon become literalized in images within and surrounding his works. An illustration in Salomé (1894) renders Wilde the actual ‘(wo)man in the moon’, through placing his distinguishing physiognomy – slightly drooping eyes and thick full lips – on a white circle [fig. 1], while many cartoons satirizing Wilde’s American lecture tour put his head at the centre of a plant that seems to be more sun than flower. An 1881 Punch cartoon by Edward Sambourne, ‘O.W.’, features Wilde’s head as the only visible centre of a sunflower, with crisp triangular petals extending outward so rigidly that they appear to emanate from his body [fig. 2]. Actually he depicted his thoughts against Victorian morality in one of his prominent works; An Ideal Husband (1895). An Ideal Husband is Wilde’s third play which revolves around blackmail and political corruption and touches on the themes of public and private honor. It is one of the most serious of Wilde’s social comedies and it contains very strong political overtones, ironically and cynically examining the contemporary political landscape.

CHANDRAVADIYA Assistant Teacher, Shri Arablush Primary School, Lalpur Dist. Jamnagar Gujarat (India) Abstract: Oscar Wilde is a greatest Anglo Irish play writer. He was born on 16th October, 1854, in Dublin into a protestant Anglo Irish family. He left Ireland in 1878 and spent some time in London, Paris and United States where he traveled with intent to deliver his lecture. He was not only greatest play writer but also he contributed on fiction, child literature, fairy tale and poem such various literary fields. His marvelous dramas are Salome (1891), An Ideal Husband (1895), A Woman of No Importance (1893), Importance of Being Earnest (1898) and Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892): he presented very smart way like that satire, comic, tragedy, fashion and realism. He was fabulous master of drawing the realistic sketch of the character. He unmasked the social evils and weakness of the society. Keywords: Being earnest, Society, Upper class 1.     CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Man is born to be a social being who cannot live alone and need someone else to help them as well as they need partner to live their life. Marriage is one of the men’s efforts not to live alone. Man and woman who decide to make a commitment in a marriage bounding have a responsibility not only towards their selves but also their partner because they no longer two independent people but they become one who complete and dependent to each other. “Marriage is a bound of loyal vow between husband and wife in which there is a responsibility from the two” (Kertamuda, 2009: 13). Marriage has a good impact towards men’s health; it can make them live longer (Gottman, 2001: 5). It can be said so because there is someone who takes care of them and Campbell (in Duvall, 1984: 4) adds that marriage makes them to live positively. Long last marriage and harmonic family are all spouses dream and no one wants their marriage ends in divorce, but it is not easy to bring it into reality because husband and wife have the difference characteristics, point of view in viewing something, past experience, emotion level, and background which can arise some marital conflicts that will lead to the unhealthy marriage and the worst is it can be ended in divorce if it happens in a long time without any means to fix it up. That is why the spouses need value of marriage to avoid the marital problems because its functions are as the binding of marriage and strengthener when their marriage is weakening by the problems.
