28 HITS September 21, 1992 MCA Inter-Office Memorandum

Date SEPT. 21, 1992

To MARK GORLICK

From BRUCE TENENBAUM

Subject MEMORANDUM ADVERTISING

Copies MCA NATIONAL FIELD STAFF

It has come to my attention that record companies are overdoing this "OPEN LETTER TO RADIO" and the "INTER-OFFICE MEMO" advertising ploy far too much.

Do you think there's a programmer out there who sees one of these open memos from one national person to another and thinks "Wow, let me read this and see what kind of insider informa- tion I can pick up" only to be surprised by a not so subtle push on that company's latest records?

Please make sure that we never use this goofy type of advertising. There must be better ways to tell everybody that:

B013BY BROWNS "Humpin Around" is #1 and platinum! His Album is 1.3 million and he's on Saturday Night Live Sept. 26.

ELTON JOHNS album is platinum and his highest charter in 15 years! He's been on the AC Top 10 for 3 months and his tour is one the hottest in the country!

PATTY SMYTH has her highest charting record ever! It's gold and she's on Letterman Sept. 25! The single's been #1 AC for 4 weeks!

THE RHYTHM SYNDICATE Debuts at 40* this week and we're seeing Top 10 phones in Denver, Tampa, Knoxville and 12 other cities!

SASS JORDAN is on over 65 stations and her album has passed 125,000.

THE RAMONES are back, climbing up the alternative chart and selling records and tour dates!

MARY J. BLIGE is the hottest new artist on the street and one of this week's most added! She's already sold 700,000 records with 150,000 in 10 days and 47,000 on Monday alone! She's #6 on the national album sales chart! I couldn't make up numbers like this even if this was one of those "open memo" adds!

I'm sure everybody will appreciate that our advertising is much more creative than that old worn out concept. Let me know your thoughts. HITSBOUND

VP Creative. PolyGram

Insie Publishing Group U.S.,

by Roy Trakin y Publishing Busts A Move

PolyGram Music Publishing Group U.S.' CEO/President Australian expatriate Colin Cornish, and his colleague, VP Creative

Mike Sandoval, have one thing in common. They both started in the mailroom at amusic publishing company and worked their way to the top. Comish has been with PolyGram Publishing Company since 1988, based in Australia, before coming to America in January of this year. He had been with Chappell Music, PolyGram's former publishing company, since 1968, when it was first sold to Phillips. He rose to Managing Director at the pubbery and stayed there through rts 1984 sale from PolyGram to aconsortium headed by Freddie

Bienstock, then left in 1988 when it was sold to Warners.

Veteran publishing executive Mike Sandoval had been at Warner Chappell for close to 20 years, then was tapped by

Cornish to join PolyGram Music as VP Creative last April. "No one else would hire him, so Idid," jokes Colin.

"Twenty years in the wilderness at Chappell deserves better."

The company has risen to the third-largest music publishing company in the world behind Wamer-Chappell and EMI Music, with a catalogue which ranges from such chestnuts as "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Flying Down To Rio" up to the latest hits from U2, Billy

Ray Cyrus, Pearl Jam, Sir Mix-A-Lot, the Beastie Boys, k.d. lang, Body Count and Bon Jovi. After unloading Chappell in 1984, PolyGram re-entered the publishing business in the U.K. in 1986 wrth the acquisition of the Dick James catalogue — which included several early

Beatles tracks, as well as the Hollies, the Troggs and a number of other '60s bands — the Welk Music Group and Island Music. Two years later, Comish was tapped to launch PolyGram's publishing company in Australia from his home base in Sydney. Since then, he has overseen an aggressive acquisition policy designed to build up PolyGram Music Publishing's presence around the world.

The company recently opened a brand-new American home office on the A&M lot in Los Angeles to go along with other

U.S. divisions in New York (headed by VP Creative John Titta) and Nashville (manned by GM Doug Howard) and a smaller Canadian branch in Toronto (where manager John Redman holds forth). There, such valued PolyGram Music employees as Creative Director John Baldi, Director of Film & TV Paula Erickson and Film & TV Manager Danny Benair try to keep the key to the CD closet from HITS' resident song-plugger (and disc schnorrer) Roy "Joy Boy" Trakin. >>>>>>>

This Epic mover is a sure-fire H-I-T, with audiences anxious to hear more from the guy who is best known for his supporting role with Mariah Carey on "I'll Be There." Both radio and retail are reporting early action on Trey's debut single. Brian Anthony, PD at WKKV in Milwaukee, sez: "It's a great adult record. It really brings out his vocal talents. It's got our phones jumpin'!" Earl Boston, PD/MD at WHYZ in Greenville/Spartanburg, SC, echoes the support: "Ever since 'I'll Be There,' our phones have lit up asking, 'Who's singing with Mariah?' Now you know!" On the retail tip, we get word of Trey's way from Wayne McLeod, of Crazy Rhythm in Montclair, NJ: "It's got a good buzz — it's a strong single, out-of-the-box!" Hank Caldwell, Sr. VP of the Black Music Division of , is firmly com- mitted to Trey: "I think Trey Lorenz is probably one of the most prolific artists I've seen enter our business in quite a HOT NEW RELEA few years. What actually emerged was an amal- gam of aspects of her artistic output, from "Small Blue Thing" to DNA to seeing Peter Gabriel in concert (polyr- hythmic textures galore) to exploring all of these ideas with truly seasoned players. The following are my highlights of last week's MN Video Music Awards: RHCP's An- thony Kiedis' tormenting of Cindy Crawford as the supermodel tried to produce aback- FRIEND stage spot; Courtney Love breastfeeding her infant baby in the cool outdoor L.A. night; Tom Freston peeking into GN'R's dressing room while the band was onstage and asking, "Is there any beer in here?"; Karen Glauber looking like she walked out of an Ann TO ALL Taylor catalog (wh000ssshhh! ); Andrew Dice Clay convincing Axl that he should intro- duce GN'R but having little luck with John Cannelli; and lastly, Matt Sorum and Duff McKagan's near fisticuffs with Nirvana bassist Chris Novoselic... I'm happy to report, in this sluggish touring market, KISS' ticket sales are still ahot commodity... Besides hanging out with Capt. Norm, my exhausting overnighter to WW 'I's NAB riverboat in New Orleans was made even more worthwhile by an enjoyable bonding experience with Atlantic's Danny Buch, plus my second prepubescent rock incarnation in one week, Bud Prager's Monti Bros. Perhaps Nintendo would sponsor aLittle Willie/Monti Bros. tour?... A 100° fever kept me away from the "Singles" premiere and party, but everyone agreed that the eve was ahoot. Heard the event was highlighted by Ministry's Al Jourgenson punching Riki Rachtman. Cameron, Ipromise to see "Singles" this week... Marla McNally, thanks for your nice note regarding my one-sentence mention on the Electric Boys. Guess you missed the hour Idid with them on my radio show... Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament and Ihad along talk about Mother Love Bone before the band's mesmerizing performance at Lollapalooza in Phoenix. Now that Ihave ab- sorbed the various opinions and perspectives on the album's re-release, Ioffer only this: Andy deserves it... I'm finally home for acouple of weeks, so Ican get to listening to cassettes by Xtra Large, Cathedral, Spread Eagle, Bad Company, Mudhoney and Flotsam & Jetsam... Tom Con- solo has signed anew lineup, Badge, featuring Michael Doman of Broken Homes, and members of Circle of Soul and Dogs D'Amour... There isn't avalid excuse why any radio station shouldn't be playing Screaming Trees' "Nearly Lost You," Bad 4 Good's "Nineteen," or Mary's Danish's "Leave It Alone." Get eclectic, album PDs! That's the future of FM radio... The buzz may be on for Rage Against The Machine, but I've never heard more musically adept, lyrically angry rock/rap than Maverick's Proper Grounds. The shit is By LONN M. FRIEND awesome... Thanks for the pie, Linnea. It was deelish. Mother Love Bone — To And), Friend out... with love.
