Lying on the northeast corner of ’s Iberian Mediterranean coast, Barcelona is known as the “Head and Hearth of .” It is known as widely for its fantastic foodie scene and wine bars as it is for its vaunted museum collections and the legendary architecture of Antoni Gaudí. The city is a marvel for the senses and is energetic, enigmatic and completely enthralling.

Over 1.6 million people live within Barcelona’s city limits, a number which inflates to almost 5 million when considering the greater metro area. Before leaving, be sure to walk along the iconic Las Ramblas pedestrian thoroughfare until you reach the fabled Gothic Quarter with its ancient labyrinthine streets tucking away tapas joints and dance clubs around every corner. Other must-see areas include Sagrada Família (where Gaudí’s renowned unfinished church lies), the old markets of El Clot, the artsy El Raval district, the splendorous Parc de Montjuïc and the beachside La Barceloneta neighborhood.

The Cotton House stands imposingly on the site of the former headquarters of the Cotton Textile Foundation “Fundación Textil Algodonera”, an emblematic 19th-century building in the neoclassical style which is a landmark in the city of Barcelona. Built on the orders of a family of the Catalan bourgeoisie when the textile industry was at its height, it was sold in the middle of the 20th Century to the Cotton Producers Guild which established its headquarters there with the aim of housing the highest possible number of cotton producing bodies and services: the idea was to create a genuine Cotton House.

12 THE CONCIERGE COTTON HOUSE HOTEL 13 Location EIXAMPLE DISTRICT

The Cotton House is located in the heart of Barcelona, in the Eixample district: a perfect grid of wide streets that form blocks with chamfers on each corner, facilitating circulation and visibility.

Like the buildings in this original district, the Cotton House has an interior patio garden. The Eixample was planned at the end of the 19th century and today it is one of the best districts in Barcelona thanks to its planning simplicity and the quantity of services and amenities it offers. It was the district chosen by rich Catalan industrial bourgeoisie to build their stately homes in the Modernist style, which is why it is the area of Barcelona with the highest concentration of buildings in this style. Of particular note are La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, both the work of Gaudí, Barcelona’s most universal architect (they are a 10-minute walk from the hotel). Not forgetting the Sagrada Familia, a 20-minute walk away.

WHAT IS THE STRANGEST REQUEST EVER RECEIVED FROM A GUEST?

I’d say that, so far, what we’ve learned is that some requests may seem strange but nothing is impossible! We’ve definitely have had a few memorable ones though. For instance, we had a woman Q&A staying with us last year who asked us where she could buy a crochet wedding veil for her daughter, who was getting married a few months WITH YOUR CONCIERGE TEAM later. We received the request on a Saturday evening, and shops in Barcelona are closed on Sunday. Needless to say, we thought we were in a bit of a pickle. However, we ended up contacting a brilliant seamstress who lived just outside of town, and we sent her the exact AS A HOTEL CONCIERGE, WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL? design and pattern the guest was looking for. A good option is to walk down Erique Granados, a long like when they were first initially designed. pedestrian street that pertains to the Eixample, where locals like to enjoy a few drinks after work or dinner in the evening.

30 THE CONCIERGE COTTON HOUSE HOTEL 31 5. Shop your way around a food market: If you are a lover of Spanish gastronomy, this is a must activity for you, and there’s quite a few markets to choose from. Walk over to to discover the oldest and most popular market in the town. If you’re not into crowds, move over to the Santa Caterina Market and admire it’s colourful ceramic roof. If you like to visit the not-so-popular areas when travelling, head over to Mercat de Sant Antoni. Whichever your choose, don’t forget to ask the shopkeepers for their favourite products, they might even offer some for you to try!

6. Immerse yourself in the Gothic District. The Gothic Quarter is one of the best known districts of Barcelona. It contains remains of the Roman Barcino, and also the main medieval buildings of the city, such as the Gothic Cathedral, Santa Maria del Pi or Plaça Reial.

7. Walk around El Born: The secret to Barcelona is to walk around the city, and the Born area is a great place to start. One of the oldest areas, it’s charm resides in its cobblestone streets, narrow alleyways and lively ambiance.

8. Most restaurants have local fishermen bringing in their catches of the day, and the dishes offered are unlike anywhere else. Take a stroll on the boardwalk surrounding the coast, and end your promenade on a terrace overlooking the sea whilst enjoying truly Mediterrenean cuisine.

The stunning region can be found only an hour and a half away from the city, and has several coastal and interior quaint little villages and towns. You’ll find hidden beaches, rocky coastlines, lovely restaurants overlooking the sea and independent and local boutiques of all kinds.
