Dear Parents/Carers,

If your child has made a ceramic masterpiece, you can look forward to being able to display this in your home after the Art Show this week.

To ensure it’s safe travel home please send in a small box (eg. Shoebox) on Monday. [This includes students in Year 1, 3, 4 and 5]

Thank you, The CAPA Committee

Thank you to our fabulous parents who hung our mural on Tuesday. Thank you to Paul Angus, Kate Myles, Jacki Fortune, Damon Dreke, Graham Jepson, Richard Hindchliffe and Alan Gregory for all their hard work hanging the mural, it was a mammoth undertaking and greatly appreciated. There are a few more bits and pieces be glued on before Friday’s Opening and Dedication, so the end is finally in site. It looks incredible!

Day at the Farm by K1C

On Thursday Kindergarten went on an excursion to the farm. We got on the bus and it took a long time to get there.

When we got there we met the farmers and we saw the baby animals. Then we learnt about different types of cows. We learnt how to milk a cow and her name was Custard. We also talked about all the dairy products made from milk and we found out that girl cows have horns.

After that, we had a tractor ride and it was very bumpy. Then we got to look at a duckling and a shy rabbit and we stroked them. They felt soft.

After lunch we watched the farmers cracking their whips and Finlay had a go. Then we watched the working dogs round up the sheep and they did a good job. We saw a farmer shearing a goat and we bought some wool back to school.

We got on the bus to come back to school. We were all feeling tired but happy. We loved our farm excursion.

BIRCHGROVE MUSIC CAMP Last week, 69 children travelled to the Baden-Powell Scout Centre in Pennant Hills for our 4th annual Music Camp – and what an extraordinary two days of music it was. Members of Intermediate and Senior Strings, the Training Band and the Concert Band spent many hours in tutorials and rehearsals working on new pieces of music but also participated in lots of fun outdoor adventure activities, involving water balloons, trapezes and hiding in the dark. The camp ended with a terrific concert for families, with all four ensembles performing new pieces learnt at camp. It is genuinely amazing how high the standard of our musicians is – the audience was blown away! A lot of work goes into Band Camp. It would not have been possible without the generous support of our principal and the hours put in by Mr Dodds and Ms Sarina who accompanied us on the camp. But special thanks must go to the tireless Energizer Bunny that is Mr Cormack, who is so valuable that he should have his own World Heritage listing. Thank you also to all the families who moved equipment to and from the camp and special thanks to Nick Rowley, Rose Russell, Simone Love, Graham Jepson, Louise Thompson, Sam Brampton and Kate Myles for their help. Your child can start to learn a musical instrument from Year 1 onwards. The Music Recruitment night on November 6 is the time to come along and find out more about our exceptional Birchgrove music programme. Jacki Fortune

CAMP REPORT

Last week I was fortunate enough to be part of Birchgrove School's annual Music Camp (String ensembles and Training and Concert Bands) who went on a two day trip to Baden Powell Scout Centre in Pennant Hills. We did at least four hours of practice every day, but our work was well rewarded in that we were able to jump off high platforms to catch a trapeze, build our own cannons and fire water balloons at each other. Also, we were given the best camp food you could eat (including delicious desserts).

All of the parents, tutors, teachers and conductors were great at making it both a learning and enjoyable experience. They were in control at all time and made sure safety was always put before every activity.

Already I am looking forward to next year's Music Camp.

Ali Brand, 5/6C
