Prsentation de l'diteurFirst in Cassandra Clares internationally bestselling Infernal Devices trilogy about the Shadowhunters.Love is the most dangerous magic of all... First in the bestselling prequel series to The Mortal Instruments, set in Victorian London. SHARMELY Ph. D Research Scholar, P.G & Research, Department of English, V.O. Chidambaram College, Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India ABSTRACT Fantasy is a genre where heroes can show off their skills and earn respect through feats such as defeating dragons, reaching their destinations unscathed while being hunted by armies, and solving prophecies that tell how the enemy can be defeated. The heroine stands between several roles, that of a special person who has the power to defeat dark forces and as a fighter who trusts only herself. Modern heroines are warriors who fight on their own. Cassandra Clare, a famous fantasy writer worked for several years as an entertainment journalist for the Hollywood Reporter before turning her attention to fiction. This article attempts to explore the heroine’s journey of the protagonist Tessa Gray in Cassandra Clare’s The Infernal Devices . KEYWORDS: Chosen One, Fantasy, Heroic Journey, Monomyth, Shadowhunters, Steampunk Novel, The Infernal Devices, Young Adult INTRODUCTION The heroic character has become one of the most important elements, as supernatural and futuristic elements allow exploration of all kinds of traits and decisions that create the idealized state which heroes represent. The several tasks presented throughout the hero’s journey transform the characters into heroes. Heroine’s journeys are also common in fantasy, produced mainly in fairytales rather than in the longer epics.

This article studies the postmodern strategies depicted in Cassandra Clare’s The Infernal Defices: Clockwork Angel in Brian McHale’s perspective which emphasize his idea of postmodernist fiction based on ontological dominant while the modernist is epistemological dominant. How the ontological is constructed in the novel become the aims to reveal in this article. Through Hrusovski’s three dimensional semiotics concept that is developed by McHale, this article starts the analysis of ontological landscape from words, worlds and construction of the novel. The result is that heterocosmos are built in intertextualzones based on pre-Victorian, Victorian and post-Victorian poems which become the epigraph in every chapter of the novel using interpolation and superimposition strategies.Beyond the ontological landscape, this novel shows the spirit of American mysticism and feminism. Keywords: postmodernist fiction, ontological dominant, world mythologies INTRODUCTION Talking about the postmodernism is mostly talking about the different perspectives of the people toward it.

  • Clockwork PRINCESS CASSANDRA CLARE the INFERNAL DEVICES
Clockwork PRINCESS CASSANDRA CLARE THE INFERNAL DEVICES BOOK THREE READING GROUP GUIDE About This Book Great things are afoot at the London Institute. Tessa and Jem are preparing for their wedding. Charlotte and Henry are expecting a baby. Cecily Herondale and Gideon Lightwood have joined the Institute’s ranks. Jessamine is coming home. And no longer believing himself to be cursed, Will can finally open his heart to love. But despite the causes for celebration, everyone is weighed down by a sense of pervasive gloom. Mortmain is still out there somewhere, biding his time before he strikes again, Consul Wayland is undermining Charlotte’s leadership, and Tessa knows that her happiness with Jem comes with a price—Will’s heart. When Mortmain’s clockwork automatons attack the Institute, leaving behind injury and confusion and death, the Shadowhunters must fight for everything they’ve ever believed in or held dear. Tessa and her friends must find Mortmain and stop him, or risk losing Jem, the Institute, their lives…and even the world as they know it. Discussion Questions 1. Cassandra Clare begins the book with a stanza from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s poem “In Memoriam A.H.H.” What is this poem about? In what ways does the overarching message of this poem fit with the events and themes of lockworkC Princess? 2. When Jem and Will first meet as boys of twelve, Jem tells Will not to “be ordinary like that. Don’t say you’re sorry.” Is either boy ordinary? What is it about their circumstances that allow them to connect with each other? Does their relationship change over the years? 3.

  • Intertextuality in Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter Chronicles Marta
FACULTAD de FILOSOFÍA Y LETRAS DEPARTAMENTO de FILOLOGÍA INGLESA Grado en Estudios Ingleses TRABAJO DE FIN DE GRADO “All the Stories Are True”: Intertextuality in Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter Chronicles Marta San Román Villar Tutor: Carlos Herrero Quirós 2017/2018 2 ABSTRACT The postmodern dictum that all texts are in fact inter-texts inevitably developing from preexisting references seems to be particularly apt to describe the modus operandi of contemporary popular writers who have built entire fictional worlds on previous works of literature. Such is the case of Judith Lewis, better known by her pen name Cassandra Clare. A close look at the novels she has published so far will unveil a complex network of intertextual connections that range from textual references to plot and character parallelisms. Her Shadowhunter Chronicles comprise a world in which Milton’s demons are destroyed by Dickensian characters and Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “Annabel Lee” tells a tragic but real love story that ultimately leads to a series of murders and necromancy. The present graduation project traces this meshwork of allusions and intertextual ties in Clare’s best-selling young adult fiction.

Set just before the events of #1 New York Times bestseller Clockwork Angel, Book 1 of The Infernal Devices. It was past midnight, and London was as quiet as she ever was; the sound of carriages never stopped completely, nor the cries and calls of the dwellers in the city, nor the lively chatter of the mudlarks at the side of the Thames, picking through the detritus the river coughed up for any items of value. Will Herondale and James Carstairs sat on the edge of the Victoria Embankment, their legs dangling down over the side; the water swirled by calmly beneath them, dark cobalt as it slid downstream toward Waterloo Bridge. Will yawned and stretched his arms back. A short sword, unsheathed, gleamed in his lap. “You know, James, I’ve started to believe this Leviathan demon doesn’t exist. Or if it does, it’s long swum out to sea by now.” “Well, it won’t be the first time we’ve sat up all night for nothing, nor the last, I’d wager,” said Jem agreeably. His dragon-headed cane was balanced across his shoulders, his arms draped over either end. His bright hair shone as the moon dodged in and out between clouds. “Are you still pursuing that investigation? The dead girls in the East End?” “It has led me to some quite interesting places,” said Will. “I won sixty pounds off Ragnor Fell at faro the other night. When you join me again—” “I do not much like those clubs. Fleecing mundanes, setting them at games they cannot possible win, mocking and drugging even Downworlders—it all leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

  • Cassandra Clare the Infernal Devices
Clockwork ANGEL CASSANDRA CLARE THE INFERNAL DEVICES BOOK ONE READING GROUP GUIDE About This Book The year is 1878. When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, something terrifying is waiting for her in London’s Downworld, where vampires, warlocks, and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa’s power for his own. Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the secretive, demon-slaying Shadowhunters—including Will and Jem, the mysterious boys she finds herself torn between. Soon they find themselves up against the Pandemonium Club, a secret organization of vampires, demons, warlocks, and humans. Equipped with a magical army of unstoppable clockwork demons, the Club is out to annihilate the Shadowhunters and rule the British Empire, and Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. Discussion Questions 1. What is the Pandemonium Club? The Shadowhunters think the Club has more power than it actually does. Why do they have that impression? What has been done to manipulate the Club’s image? 2. Tessa gradually uncovers information about herself and her powers, but she still knows very little about why she was “created.” Why is it important to her and to the Shadowhunters to find out? How does Tessa’s view of herself change over the course of the story? 3.
