Team Letter From the Team Vicar, Rev’d Elizabeth Moore-Bick As per usual I will be attending a number of school leavers’ services in a few weeks’ time. I always find them poignant occasions, but this year there will be something even more poignant about them, as this year I too am a leaver! May of you will know that I have accepted a place at the University of Sussex to do their one year PGCE course (the teacher training qualification), starting in September. I will be training to teach secondary school pupils (11-18 year olds) with my specialist subject as Classics, which is what my first degree was in. It looks like a very flexible course and I’m hoping that I might be able to teach a little RS too. Once we have had a few weeks’ settling in time, much of the year is spent in our placement school, so it will be a real question of ‘learning on the job’ – something I’m very much looking forward to. Any time of transition is a strange one. I’m currently winding up certain things here and starting to look ahead and organise what’s needed for the new venture. There’s also an odd mixture of feelings – excitement, sadness, thankfulness, apprehension. There are days when I’m very glad it is a transition period and doubtless it won’t be too long before I’m settled in and feeling comfortable with a new rhythm and routine, but the change still has to be lived through. I guess it is just a question of ‘head down and get on with it!’ People’s reactions to my next step have been mixed, though mostly encouraging. A few long established teachers have asked me if I’m feeling quite right in the head, but getting further into the world of education is something I’ve felt I’ve wanted to do for some time now. There’s no doubt either that this has been shaped further and deepened by my time both working with the schools in our deanery and now as part time chaplain at Salisbury Cathedral School. Do I fully know what I’m undertaking? No, of course not, but which of us ever really does when it comes to the big adventures of life, and they are the best ones to engage with. All I know is that I’m following my heart and that is one of our best guides in life. I recently went on pilgrimage to Chartres and one of the pieces of advice we were given there was ‘pass by what you do not love.’ I found that incredibly

4 liberating, hearing it as an encouragement to find our heart’s passion and then pursue it with all that we have. It hasn’t always been easy for me here in the Clarendon Team. Some of you have known my struggles; thank you for your kindness, hospitality and compassion which has sustained me. I have appreciated many conversations, kind gestures, acts of worship and events that we have shared, but it really is time for me to go and I look forward to the next chapter with hope. The process for another stipendiary (paid) minister joining the team is already well underway and I do pray that you will be really blessed by someone godly, prayerful and visionary coming to join you. As I look ahead with excitement, I hope that you too can look ahead with hope and in peace. Julian of Norwich is one of my favourite spiritual writers, so I leave you with her words: “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.” With very best wishes, Elizabeth

Pitton Primary School Our new reception class pupils have been visiting the school this month, to meet Miss Pearce and their new classmates, whilst our Year 5’s have all been out visiting secondary schools in the local area and our Year 6’s are preparing for their move to new schools in September – we will miss them. The Year 5 girls had a wonderful time at Godolphin School learning how to play lacrosse. It was so popular that we have ‘spent’ some of our Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers on a lacrosse set so that we can build it into our PE curriculum. The older Juniors also took part in an athletic competition and a swimming gala – both against tough competition. Sarum Class are looking at natural disasters this term and had a fascinating talk from Stuart Mariner and Sarah Sankey all about Pitton flooding. They are also in final rehearsals for their Salisbury Playhouse show ‘Matilda Madness’. Most of the Juniors also went to the Playhouse to watch Romeo & Juliet, as a follow-on from our Shakespeare week in April. We will be saying goodbye to Mrs Gill Edwards at the end of this term with a special Leaving Assembly and Tea Party. Gill has worked at Pitton Primary School for the last 27 years, starting in the old building and then moving to the new building in 2002. The assembly is on 20th July at 2.30pm and is open to everyone, so if you are interested in attending then please just come along – see the advert elsewhere in the Dun Valley News.

Brownies and Guides Another busy month for both units, making the most of being able to get outside! The Guides have learnt how to put up tents, completed their agility badge, continued to work on Patrol resources, cooked (obviously!) and prepared for Pitton Carnival. They also spent a night ‘on the beach’ at the back of Pitton Village Hall for their annual sleepover. What used to be a field was turned into a Hawaiian beach with sand, mocktails, limbos and surfing amongst other things! The Brownies meanwhile have learnt how to be spies in preparation for their Spy Kids holiday in early July, played games and worked on the Brownie promise. Hopefully everyone who came to either the worm charming or the BINGO enjoyed themselves! The girls really looked forward to these events as could hopefully be seen by the enthusiastic way everyone was looked after! We finish July with a trip to Cookafest in Exeter to watch 2 of our Brownies compete in a cooking competition, followed by parties to celebrate the end of term. If anyone is interested in joining our adult teams for either Brownies (Tuesday evening) or Guides (Monday evening) then please do contact Nicki on 712451 or [email protected].

Pitton Pre-School We have 20 children leaving us for ‘big school’ in the summer, with over half moving to Pitton Primary School and the rest going to St Andrews, Greentrees, West Tytherley and Chafyn Grove. We have been helping all of our leavers develop their independence and confidence before they take this next exciting step. We wish them all the best for the future. We have been really busy this month! We cooked bananas around a campfire, laid and followed trails around the village, built dens, enjoyed Rugby Tots and held our annual Sports Day. We are all looking forward to bringing our bikes to pre-school in July and practising our bike-riding on the field. There are still a few spaces available for September, but we are filling up fast. If you are interested in your child joining us (anytime from their second birthday) then please contact Carrie on 07785 933966 to arrange a visit. 9

Did you know? By the time you read this, China may have more English speaking people than any other country in the world. It is predicted that 65% of today’s A-level students will do jobs that do not currently exist. 1 in 5 employees have been in their present job for less than a year, and 1 in 2 less than five years. There are 1.3 billion active Facebook users. There are 5.9 billion searches on Google every day. The number of text messages sent each day is double the earth’s total population. The number of internet attached devices in 1984 was 1,000. In 1992 it was 1,000,000. In 2008 it was 1,000,000,000. In 2014 it was 10,000,000,000. WHIST DRIVES - PITTON VILLAGE HALL 3rd Wednesday in the month at 7.30 pm Next one on 15th July 29

Early summer lunch menu In the Canaries I was sitting outside the cliff-top bar-restaurant reading the menu, wondering what on earth a shearwater hamburger tasted like, when I realised that the bar was actually called the ‘Shearwater’. And for good reason, because there on the cliffs below were examples of the species ‘Cory’s shearwater’ breeding. They visit their burrows at night to minimise the risk of large gulls taking the eggs or young. In late summer and autumn, most birds migrate into the Atlantic as far north as the south-western coasts of Great Britain and Ireland, and they return to the islands of the Azores, Madeira and the Canaries in February. Cory's shearwater is identifiable by its size; it is large, about 50cm in length and with a 120cm wingspan. It has brownish-grey upperparts, white underparts and a yellowish bill. It feeds on fish, molluscs and offal, and can dive deep (15m or more) in search of prey. The bird flies with long glides, and always with wings bowed and angled slightly back, unlike the stiff, straight-winged flight of the similarly sized great shearwater. The Cory’s shearwater is a close relative of the Manx shearwater, more common around the coasts of Britain. The Manx shearwater typically flies within 10m of the sea surface, and also nests in burrows on small islands which it visits only at night. Its nesting colonies are all in the north Atlantic, the most important being on islands off Wales, Scotland and Ireland with a total of more than 300,000 pairs. Three-quarters of the British and Irish birds breed on just three islands: Skomer, Skokholm and Rum. The Manx shearwater is smaller than the Cory’s at 35cm long with a 80cm wingspan. It has the typically ‘shearing’ flight of the genus, dipping from side to side on stiff wings with few wingbeats, the wingtips almost touching the water. It readily follows fishing boats, where it indulges in noisy squabbles. This shearwater is mainly silent at sea, even when birds are gathered off the breeding colonies. It calls on its nocturnal visits to the nesting burrows in flight, on the ground and in the burrows, although moonlight reduces the amount of calling. The sounds largely consist of a raucous series of croons, howls and screams, typically in groups of 4–5 syllables which become weaker and throatier. On dark evenings you can imagine groups of witches eerily calling you to the edge of the cliff, the sounds are so haunting. I didn’t choose the hamburger - I went for omelette and salad. 30
