CARBY ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN COMPARATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL 1, NO. 1 (2003): 19–34. Los Angeles, California, is a city that has a very complex symbolic relation to the rest of the US. For me, the story of the Belmont Learning Center vividly dramatizes the betrayal of minority dreams by the boosterism, corruption, ineptitude, and potential for environmental disaster that characterizes the political culture of the city. Planned more than a decade ago at a projected cost of $200 million, it will be, if completed, the most expensive public high school ever built in the US.1 Construction of the Belmont Learning Center proceeded despite warnings issued by the State Division of Oil and Gas about the dangers of the site, an abandoned oil field. The black officials of the school board were desperate to solve the overcrowding and generally dire conditions in which so many young black, Latino, and poor students do not get educated in the Los Angeles Unified School District. But potentially explosive methane gas and toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, known to cause neurological damage, seeped into the school structure for which there appeared to be no remediation. Finally, after spending $170 million, the School Board voted in January 2000 to abandon the project.2 However, Superintendent Roy Romer revived the project, and, with $175 million spent so far, completion could add yet another $100 million to the costs. Oil-well logs have revealed an earthquake fault underneath already existing buildings on the campus; any seismic activity would cause a rush of the gases with devastating consequences.3 More than a metaphor for the city, this unfolding tragic narrative actually embodies the multi-layered political, social, economic, racialized and environmental complexity of Los Angeles from its fissures and abandoned oil fields below ground to the concrete highways soaring through, around and above its neighborhoods.

As members of the generation who would be running the country by the year 2000, what did they think they would become? Inspired by World in Action founder Tim Hewat’s passionate interest in both the Jesuit saying “Give me the child until he is seven and I will show you the man” and the rigid class system of 1960s Britain, Seven Up set out to discover whether or not the children’s lives were pre-determined by their backgrounds. The result was ground-breaking television – the very first example of a program recording real people living real lives – and the follow-up films have won an array of awards. Director Michael Apted, who has since moved to Hollywood to direct films including Gorky Park , The Coal Miner’s Daughter , The World Is Not Enough and Gorillas in the Mist , has returned every seven years to chart the children’s progress through life.

Winters INTRODUCTION Finding the right keys for ninth graders with reading problems can open the door to remediation. Lack of experiences with the world and shallow personal interests often cause the poor reader to push aside appropriate reading materials. In addition, if they are poor readers, they are often handed material that does not spark interest in people their age. The reading level may be appropriate, but the interest level may be too low. As a result, they do not practice reading nor do they experience the enjoyment which reading can bring. One of the major tasks in front of today's urban high school teacher is to provide reading instruction beginning at the independent level of the student, to encourage the expansion of the world of experiences for their students, as well as to increase the skill levels. The goal of this unit is to increase the world of the students' experience, their interest in reading and, therefore, the number of books read by the students each year. A secondary goal is to identify ways to allow for specific reading instruction, decoding words, building vocabulary recognition and comprehension, finding meanings and inferences, and increasing speed. Teaching reading to teenagers is difficult. Most people assume that everyone knows how to read by the time that they reach high school.

Apted began his career as a researcher at Granada Television, and within a few years, became established as a television director and investigative reporter on the news series "World in Action," and subsequently began directing episodes of Britain's long-running series "Coronation Street." Apted’s award-winning career includes a Grammy, Directors Guild Award and British Academy Awards. Apted has been nominated two additional times for the Directors Guild of America award: for the PBS production of Harold Pinter's The Collection, starring Sir Laurence Olivier, Alan Bates and Malcolm MacDowell, and for Coal Miner’s Daughter. Apted also received the International Documentary Associations’ highest honor, the IDA Career Achievement Award. Two of his television series won British Academy awards: The Lovers for Best Comedy Series, and Folly Foot for Best Children's Series. Apted himself won Best Dramatic Director for Another Sunday and Sweet F.A. His other sixty-plus television credits include works by such leading English writers as Colin Welland, Jack Rosenthal and Arthur Hopcraft. In 1972, Apted made his directorial feature film debut with the tense war era drama Triple Echo. Next, Apted's great love for rock and roll made him a natural to direct 1975's acclaimed Stardust, a journey into the dark underside of the music world. The Squeeze, a thriller with Stacy Keach followed in 1977, and two years later, Apted again teamed up with producer Puttnam to direct Dustin Hoffman and Vanessa Redgrave in Agatha.

Christiana Lobo M.Phil Research Scholar, Urumu Dhanalakshmi College- Trichy 19. Abstract: Mostly uses animal symbolism to give us insight into character’s personalities. He uses several different animal images to define moments in Easy’s character arc. The first is the jay perched on the fence, which tantalizes the neighbor’s vicious dog. He sees himself in the bird; he has all the means to fly-to achieve the independence and joy to which he aspires-but finds himself both paralyzed and mesmerized by the thrills of crime, mystery, and danger. While he waits in the interrogation room at the police station, he finds himself drawn to the dead mouse in the corner. At first, he sees himself as the mouse, cornered by the catlike Miller and Mason. When Easy regains his sense of pride and thirst for justice, he imagines that he mouse is Mason, whom he ‘crushes so that his whole suit is soiled and shapeless in the corner; his eyes come out of his head’. He again puts himself in relation to an animal in his dream about the catfish. The catfish, which is larger-than-life, represents the big dreams he has of being a homeowner and a professional success. He has hooked the catfish just as he has taken the first steps in getting what he wants. Yet the catfish eludes him, just as his dream of financial security does as well, until the end of the novel.
