Chairman’s message

Normally this edition would be full of information, time, and dates relating to our many summer activities including Meadowlark Week and Fete. Sadly, due to the social distancing policy, they are now cancelled or on hold. Ketton Lotto is also on hold. When that resumes the months will be drawn together. The Centre has been closed to all regular users, clubs and private hire for the duration of this pandemic. However, it is being used as an emergency hub for volunteers to use as a base from which to work. It brings back memories of organised hot water at the Centre during the 1987 hurricane. Looking forward to Covid-free days, we are hoping that Bobstock Live Music and Beer Festival can go ahead on August 29, as well as plans for a ‘Fun Day’ in the Autumn, and possibly a skating rink at the Centre in November or December. Please do look after yourselves and your neighbours. Stay home, save the NHS and keep loving Kedington. Tony Farr lolandtony15 @gmail.com 01440 704179 kedington-community-association.org.uk

‘And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently. And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways the earth began to heal. And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they have been healed.’ Kitty O’Meara

Thank you!

As I write in early April we are in the grip of Coronavirus lockdown. Yet, despite the difficulties, our two shops continue to provide excellent service. Kedington Butchers is closed but Paul, Sharon, Steve and Sue are taking telephone orders and delivering to the doorstep. The Nisa village store is open and owners Dilip and Daxa plus staff Tracey, Heather, Rebecca and Natalie are keeping us fed and watered. A big thank you to all these people who have soldiered on bravely and offered a lifeline, especially for those unable to leave the village. Our gratitude also to Ann Naylor and Stella Wilsher who, under the patronage of the Parish Council, are helping the vulnerable and housebound by doing shopping and collecting prescriptions. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by all of us. Shaun Jarvis

10 Ketton Review Summer 2020 From the Editor

As I write, we are not sure when we shall be able to distribute physical copies of this issue of the Ketton Review, but we have decided to go ahead with an on-line copy, and to be ready to send out copies as soon as restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so. This issue contains a message of thanks from Shaun for the work of volunteers in the village that I’m sure we’d all like to endorse. For the next issue of the Review I’d be pleased to include any other messages of thanks for acts of neighbourliness in the community. Do please also send me your stories of your time in lockdown. I’d like to publish a selection of them. For our younger readers, this is your chance to become a published author! You will see from Dawn’s article about the Library and Kirk’s about RBL, as well as perhaps from your personal experience, that people are turning to on-line meeting places such as Zoom, Houseparty and Skype to keep in touch in lockdown. I too have Housepartied with my family and read bedtime stories to my granddaughter on Skype, as well as our regular Facetime. As Dawn says in her report, the Library Friends are hoping to keep some of their activities going using video conferencing. Do let Dawn know if you’d like to join us. For me, even as a non-user of social media, the use of video links for meetings is nothing new. My first funding application in the 1980s was for hardware to use videoconferencing for university teaching. That application was unsuccessful, but by the turn of the century we were using specialist videoconferencing software for meetings and for teaching. In recent years this not only allowed me to take classes from home – avoiding the drive to Leicester – but also for students to benefit from shared expertise across the world. (We exchanged sessions with McMaster University in Canada.) The national Society to the management of which I contribute meets monthly by Skype, as do its sub-committees, with face-to-face meetings just twice a year. Of course, in the beginning we had the usual communication issues (“can you hear me?”) and sometimes still do; and we can sometimes suffer from dodgy internet connections. In the early days this led to the abandonment of more than one video meeting. However, in general the saving of the time and expense of travel, and mitigating its deleterious environmental impact, is well worth the effort of getting the set-up right. Ketton Review Summer 2020 11 Kedington Parish Covid-19 Volunteers

Not quite the Spring 2020 we were all looking forward to, but what did spring into action was the team of Kedington Parish Volunteers who immediately took up the challenge of supporting our wonderful residents of Kedington and Calford Green, during this pandemic. A number of volunteers were quickly mustered, with many offering their time to help our team get up and running within 48 hours. A letter was sent to every household in the Parish from the Parish Council (whose ‘umbrella’ the team is working under) offering our support with shopping, prescription collections, or a ‘listening ear’ to anyone who needed one. The team has engaged with many other agencies: Suffolk County Council, Families & Communities Team at Council and the Lifelink Team at West Suffolk Council, who have given us lots of information, and we are now in a position to help residents if they request assistance. Word quickly spread about our team and we were contacted by Christmas Maltings & Clements Practice in Haverhill, requesting our help. Two lead volunteers attended a meeting at the Practice with the Practice Manager, where it transpired the Pharmacy at the Practice could no longer offer delivery of medication to patients, as their drivers were in the process of being retrained to assist other urgent areas of Covid-19. The Practice were also concerned about people visiting them to collect medication in the current pandemic. A way forward was discussed and within a few hours, a system was set up to collect medication from the Pharmacy and deliver it to residents in the Parish. Other GP Surgeries in Haverhill and Clare are also having our volunteers deliver medication to their patients. We are pleased to confirm we are delivering medication twice a week around the Parish. The team have also engaged with Reach Food Bank in Haverhill and have been able to offer our services with regard to delivering food boxes to any of our residents that need them. Everyone is incredibly grateful for the many telephone calls, thanking volunteers for their support and for the work that we are all carrying out. It is a privilege to be able to help so many wonderful people in our Parish, many of whom carry out a lot of ‘unpaid’ work to make it the great place it is today. We know many of you want to be out there with us, but it is our time to help you. On behalf of the team, special thanks to everyone for your support and words of wisdom.

12 Ketton Review Spring 2020 Ketton Review Spring 2020 13 Ketton Review Summer 2020 13 Ketton folk – Linda and Laurence Freel

We moved to Kedington from Romford in 2002. At the time I was working at Hertford Regional College, teaching students with learning difficulties and Linda ran a pottery business, making and selling her own work. In our wisdom we thought it would be expedient to move nearer to my work. In the event we moved even further away, the reason being that during the house hunting process we came upon the Dell as it was then called, we liked the village, the people seemed friendly and there were plenty of local amenities to enjoy. The cottage itself needed a lot of work doing to it; Linda saw the potential, I saw the challenge. Then we both set to work on making it home. I have a background in carpentry, which enabled me to carry out most of the work. Linda, always a keen gardener, did wonders to what was basically a blank canvas. Over the years we have had a few repairs done and a new ridge to the thatch to keep it going until it needed a full rethatch. Around January this year that time duly arrived. The work took six weeks and was carried out by (father and son) Brian and Tom Mizon, based in Horseheath. Their work is exemplary; they were very considerate of our needs, and of our neighbours, and cleared up daily. Their website will clarify, but I believe their business goes back several generations and they have their own fields for growing the thatch. Whilst the work was in progress, passers-by were showing considerable interest in the processes, and Brian in particular was more than happy to explain and answer questions. In short, they were a pleasure to have around and I would recommend then unreservedly. Finally, I know you want to know, Tom is the one who suggests and makes the animals. Ketton Review Summer 2020 17 Night skies

On the 20 March, we passed through the Spring equinox. These means that the nights will now continue to grow shorter and, I hope, warmer. Currently dominating our evening skies is the brilliant planet Venus. High up in the western skies after sunset it is brighter than anything else in the sky apart from the Sun and the Moon. If you have a pair of binoculars or a small telescope now is a good time to look at the planet: you will find that it looks rather like a small gibbous moon. Only Mercury and Venus show phases like this, because they are closer to the Sun than the Earth. If you continue to watch Venus after sunset, you will find the phase will continue to shrink down to a thin crescent. The size of the planet will gradually increase as Venus moves closer to the Earth until it reaches ‘inferior conjunction’ on 3 June when it lies between the Sun and the Earth. It will by then have vanished from our evening skies and will have moved into the morning skies. It quite possible that you have never seen the innermost planet, Mercury. Usually it is rather low down and close to the Sun making it harder to see. However, there is a good opportunity to spot the planet in May. Go out in the early evening on 21 May and locate the planet Venus (it will be a little lower in the sky by then). If you look just below Venus in about the 6 o’cock position you will see the planet Mercury looking like a fainter, somewhat orange coloured star. The outer bright planets – Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn – are all to be found low down in the morning skies. During the summer Mars will be a splendid sight in our night skies, but for now it is languishing low down in Capricorn. However, two of the largest planets in our solar system – Jupiter and Saturn can be found fairly close together in the morning skies. If you look towards the south-east before sunrise you will see the brilliant planet Jupiter. If you look to the left you will see the slightly fainter Saturn. A small telescope will show the rings which are currently rather wide open. A Gibbous Venus sketched by Paul G Abel (Leicester, UK) on 21 May 2018 using an 8-inch (203 mm) Newtonian reflector telescope at 167x magnification. The sketches were produced (left) in white light and (right) with a deep yellow eyepiece filter. Note the planet’s characteristic ‘W’ or ‘Y’-shaped cloud markings and how the illuminated phase appears slightly greater when seen through the

18 Ketton Review Summer 2020 Finally, you may have heard rumours that we were due to have a bright naked eye comet visible in June. Comet C/2019 Y4 ATLAS had been showing promise – it has continued to rise in brightness and had it continues to do so, there is no doubt that it would have been easily visible to the unaided eye in the May evening skies. Alas, recent amateur observations have shown that the comet has disintegrated – for anyone who follows comets this is not at all unusual. Comets are essentially lumps of ice. If the core is made more of ice and loose rock then the Sun’s influence tends to pull them apart as they come closer to the Sun. Comet Atlas not withstanding, there is still plenty to see in the early summer skies! Paul G Abel

Ketton Review Summer 2020 19 Ketton Early Birds needs your help!

Established in 1969 and previously known as Kedington Playgroup, Ketton Early Birds expanded into pre-school and out of school care in April 2008. Our most recent Ofsted inspection in December 2018 awarded the setting an ‘outstanding’ report in which it commented ‘children show high levels of independence’ and their behaviour is described as ‘exemplary’. It was also noted that the children are ‘highly motivated’ and ‘making excellent progress’. Many people are not aware that Ketton Early Birds is a charity run by a committee of volunteers. We have some members who have volunteered for a number of years, making a significant and valued contribution, stepping down at the AGM this year. It is vital that we recruit some new members for the setting to continue to run. What is the role of the committee? The committee members are the trustees of Ketton Early Birds and together they are responsible for ensuring the overall management and smooth-running of the setting. This can mean anything from organising a fundraising event to negotiating with the landlord over the terms of a lease. Why should you get involved? The committee includes parents, carers and family members of children that attend the setting plus members of the local community. Being part of a committee can be satisfying and rewarding. It’s a great addition to your CV and you will personally benefit from this experience by putting something positive back into the community. We also have cake at every meeting! What is involved? We generally meet once a term and hold a fundraising event once a term. There are lots of ways you can contribute to the committee and you can choose to give as much or as little time as you can spare. The good thing is you don’t need any experience to make a difference. Becoming a member includes: Regularly attending committee meetings and contributing to the decision-making process on items such as staffing and fees; Assisting with organising and running fundraising events. Assisting with annual tasks such as reviewing the setting policies, taking part in staff; observations and researching the summer trip; Undertaking Ofsted suitability checks as required.

20 Ketton Review Summer 2020 There are some regular jobs too: Chairperson: Organises and chairs the committee meetings and AGM; Sets the agenda for the meetings together with the Setting Manager; Produces and presents an annual report at the AGM; Acts as the ‘nominated person’ for Ofsted purposes; Provides any necessary support to the Setting Manager and other committee members. Treasurer: Presents accounts to the members at the AGM; Periodically reviews the bank account, updating the list of signatories as necessary; Supports the Accounts Administrator in reviewing and returning financial reports as necessary. Secretary: Takes minutes during meetings, types up and sends to committee members in a timely manner; Submits the annual accounts to HMRC and the Charities Commission; Regularly checks the committee post in the setting office and responds when required. If you would like more information about getting involved please give me a call or drop me an email. I’d love to hear from you. Carly Loveday (Committee Chair) 07931 212202 [email protected]

22 Ketton Review Summer 2020 Kedington Gardening Club

We were sadly not able to complete our planned programme this spring due to the COVID-19 emergency. Our intention is to resume at the beginning of September. We hope to see all our friends and members then – safe, well and eager to resume our programme. Whilst it is not normally a hardship for our members to spend more time in their gardens, I am sure we all wish it could be in better circumstances. The best wishes of the Club go to all our previous speakers and visiting hosts at this difficult time for them, both personally and professionally. Before we were so rudely interrupted however, we did manage two of our planned talks. In February we had a talk from Tom Cole, An Evergreen For all Occasions. Tom was able to provide many interesting ideas of how evergreens may be used, singly and in combinations, to add interest throughout the year. In March, Lucy Hollis and Flis Plent brought their varied experience to discuss planting designs and combinations with the group. This included examples of commissions they had carried out for clients (using both before and after pictures), along with pictures of their own gardens. These had a real theatrical effect, which provided real food for thought for many of the members of the group. Our meetings are normally held in the RBL hall on the first Tuesday of the month. The topics of the upcoming talks are advertised on notices around the village. Any non-members can attend one of our meetings for £1.50 if they think that they would like to find out more about any of the topics. It’s worth remembering that you do not have to be an expert gardener, or even much of a gardener at all, to come to our talks and admire the pictures. We would like all our members to be inspired by what they see but it’s not compulsory and there is no quiz afterwards – only homemade cake. Janice White

Ketton Review Summer 2020 23 24 Ketton Review Summer 2020 1st Kedington Cubs – coping with our extra time at home A round-up of your incredible efforts so far One day you will all be scouts or look back on your cub scouting days and think, I did my best in a tough situation, I made the most of my time at home in 2020 and didn’t moan I was bored, I always looked to be useful and be a part of the team that is my family and help make things work and run smoothly at home. Sir Robert Baden Powell said about the duties of Scout (that’s all Cubs, Beavers and Scouts, plus Explorers and Leaders,) – we are all living by the Scout Law: A Scout’s honour is to be trusted. A Scout is loyal. A Scout’s duty is to be useful and to help others. A Scout is a friend to all and a brother/sister to every other Scout. A Scout is kind and courteous. A Scout is a friend to animals. A Scout listens to his parents, sixer/lodge leader or Patrol Leader or Cub Scout leader. Most important a Cub always smiles and whistles, making the best out of any bad situation! Leaving any situation better than he/she found it. And overleaf is the proof! You have posted your fantastic pictures, your clever videos and creations, colourful drawings, tasty cooking, Zumba, arduous gardening, tough Joe Wicks work-outs, scrumptious afternoon tea, cake making, beautiful art paintings, clever model making, knot tying, lovely campfire songs, super camp bed making, and tents your sleeping adventures, showing us all what an amazing bunch of CUBs you really are. Be proud 1st Kedington; we shall all emerge from this time as different people but maybe in a good way, so much achieved by you all and so much yet to do. Remember this time and draw upon it in the future to keep you strong in hard situations through your life. A huge ‘well done’ to Mum and Dad, relatives, step-parents and carers who have encouraged and supported you to complete your tasks and badges – it’s teamwork and that’s our thing at 1st Kedington; it’s all about the team. Enjoy the summary of your work on the next two pages, and look forward to next week to see new challenges there will be to do – we could not be more proud. Akela & Team Sharon Eames

32 Ketton Review Summer 2020 Lockdown rhubarb soda bread

Ingredients Stick of rhubarb – about 100gm Thumb of ginger (optional) 2 heaped teaspoons of soft brown sugar Juice of half a lemon (or 2 teaspoons bottled lemon juice) 300ml semi skimmed milk 300g self raising flour plus extra to shape the dough and dust 1 rounded teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

Method 1. Roughly chop the rhubarb into small chunks and mix with the brown sugar. 2. Mix the lemon juice with the milk and leave to curdle for a few minutes. 3. Mix the flour and bicorbanate of soda in a bowl and stir in the rhubarb. Grate in the ginger (if using). 4. Make a well in the mixture and gradually pour in the milk and lemon. Mix with a wooden spoon to form a sticky dough. If it gets too dry add more liquid, if too wet add more flour. 5. Tip the dough on a floured worktop, shape lightly into an oblong (or the shape of your tin). To achieve a light and fluffy soda bread, resist overworking! 6. Lightly flour a 1lb loaf tin and pop in the dough. (It doesn’t have to fit exactly.) Score a 1cm deep split along the centre of the dough and dust the top with a little more flour. 6. Cook in a preheated oven 180C for around 40 mins, until the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped and feels light. 7. Remove from the tin and allow to cool on a wire rack. Eat warm with butter and/or jam, or wrap in clingfilm when completely cool to keep fresh. TIP Use up any old plain yoghurt with, or instead of, the milk. Vivi Brar

Ketton Review Summer 2020 35 Our new Rector

The Right Revd Martin Seeley, the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, is delighted to announce that the next Rector of the Stourhead Benefice will be The Revd Christopher Giles. Christopher is presently Assistant Curate Saint Augustine’s Church Thorpe Bay in the Diocese of Chelmsford. ‘Father Chris’, his wife Laura, their sons Logan and Jacob plus the family dog, Buddy, will move to the Rectory in Kedington once the current restrictions for house moves are lifted. He will almost certainly be licensed in his new role via video link as soon as they have moved. A service of welcome and celebration will be arranged sometime in the future. Jill Davis From Fr Chris Giles – Rector designate – the Stourhead benefice Dear friends As I write, we as a family haven’t moved yet to Kedington. We were due to move on 31 March, as like you, we are self-isolating at home in Thorpe Bay, Southend on Sea. Our removal company have temporary closed, as is the case with so many businesses recently, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, so we are not certain at this time when this will go ahead. I am due to be installed and inducted as the new Rector of the Stourhead Benefice on 29 April. The service, at this point I imagine, will be postponed. We are very excited about our move to Kedington. We have visited a few times, including a visit to Kedington Primary School, where our youngest son Jacob will attend in year six once we arrive. In September our eldest son Logan goes off to university in Cambridge to study animation and illustration. On 5 March I was given a tour of the benefice, visiting each of the parish churches, then back to Kedington to visit the British Legion and the Community Centre. I was given a warm welcome by all and we look forward on our arrival to continue exploring this wonderful place. I have personally always lived by the sea, so it will be very different for me adjusting to life in the country, whereas my wife Laura (a second-year midwife student) grew up

36 Ketton Review Summer 2020 in a very small village, Moreton, near Ongar, Essex. She has missed country life ever since she moved away some twenty years ago. All her childhood memories come flooding back as we make each visit here. We have started some jobs to the Rectory. Laura has been busy decorating the front room and I have erected a garden shed. We want to send a big thank you to those who have been gardening for us. Laura as a gardener has big plans for the garden and making this house ‘home’ for us. Please, if you see us out and about, (if we are allowed by then) introduce yourself. Equally, if you go by the house and we are busying ourselves in the garden, we would love to meet you. If you can attend my induction service (whenever this may be) we would be very honoured to have you there. With all good wishes and every blessing Fr Chris

38 Ketton Review Summer 2020 Kedington Royal British Legion

As you are aware at this moment in time we are in lockdown and like everyone else our lives are on hold, events that have been planned for months if not years have been postponed or cancelled and (at the time of writing) we have no idea when we can get back to some form of normality. We are attempting to hold a ‘virtual’ event online and streamed direct to social media to commemorate victory in Europe day Friday 8 May, details of which will be added to various online platforms. Whilst we are disappointed that the planned street party and evening event is not happening, we feel that we should at the very least have some kind of commemoration for the 75th anniversary of this important event in the Commonwealth’s history. We are at this time making sure that we are contacting our Branch Members just to make sure that all is well, and whether there is anything we can help with. This, is in addition to the fantastic work the Parish Council and the team of volunteers are doing, should ensure that no one falls through the net in our community. If you need to contact the Legion you can call Kirk (07951 312355) or Steve (07762 772281) and we will do our upmost to help you. Also, if you simply want to chat, we are here for you, so please do not hesitate to call us. It is at times like this when you are really reminded of what a fantastic country we all live in, and especially how good it Is to live in a village like Kedington where everyone is pulling together to get through this crisis. I can’t think of a place I would rather be in! Not much else to say except to stay safe and healthy and that we look forward to seeing you all again soon. Thank you from myself and the Kedington & District Branch team. Kirk Pearson Chairman

40 Ketton Review Summer 2020 Haverhill and District Twin Towns Association

Like so many other organisations, all our events and meetings have now been put on hold. We have had to cancel our French Evening at the beginning of May and our trip to Ehringshausen at the end of May. Our next event was planned for July and our friends from Pont St Esprit were due to come to visit us at the beginning of August but it is anyone’s guess now if these events will take place. Let’s hope that by the next edition of the Review we may have something positive to report. Beryl Wilkens (Secretary to the Association)

The sun was warm but the wind was chill, You know how it is with an April day. When the sun is out and the wind is still, You’re one month on in the middle of May. Ketton Review Summer 2020 41 Flora and Dorothy – the stranger in the bed… …and the face at the window. Yes, we have another hen. Flora was depressed without a companion and coupled with her annual moult was a sad chicken, tapping her beak on a tin bucket at the hut door at bedtime to summon a companion. Before searching for another hen, I wanted to see how best to house her in the same hut as Flora, but not be attacked as previous hens. I measured an area near a nest box and estimated the height of wire needed to prevent either hen flying over, voicing my ideas, (well they do say talking to oneself is the first sign of madness, and having read previous chapters you may well say ‘this is not the first with her’). When I turned, Flora was beside me looking up and listening, seemingly joining in the discussion, hopefully approving my plans. As it turned out it was too much upheaval for what I hoped would be a short-term tenancy for the newcomer. With luck Flora would welcome her, but, although lonely, she was always suspicious of a new arrival, and I must say if I came home one day and found a stranger busying herself in my house I would be most indignant. Finding a hen was not easy. Previously Carol at Jaybeth Sanctuary had found me two, who, now sadly gone, were delightful, so I contacted her. Co-incidentally she had just taken in a brown hen. It was meant to be. Eric was promptly despatched with cat basket to inspect and decide if the hen was suitable. Had I gone I would probably have brought home at least one dog and several cats! It was exciting for me waiting for the new arrival (Flora was oblivious), wondering what she would be like and would Flora like her. Eric carried the basket, which appeared to be filled with a heap of brown feathers, into the adjoining hut and opened it. An enormous healthy brown hen stepped out and began foraging in the straw before wallowing in a glorious dust bath after which she tucked into a hearty meal, chattering non-stop in her joy and approval of the accommodation and facilities. This reminded me of when we go to a hotel for a holiday and immediately investigate the facilities. Perhaps there’s bit of chicken in all of us! We closed the door on her for the night. Next morning, she was keenly waiting to come through to Flora’s hut. I fixed a wire screen in the doorway. Through it the hens sized each other up, drawling all the time and in full view of each other

42 Ketton Review Summer 2020 strangely picking at straw in their respective huts. I’d love to know what that was all about. Then Flora lost interest and went about her business for the rest of the day leaving the as yet unnamed hen drawling sadly in her lonely room. The third day I opened the wire. All went well, apart from Flora giving the odd peck to show she was boss, whilst our new lady continuously drawled sadly. Was she homesick? I had no idea of her previous life, but she had obviously been loved. However, to cut a long story short, things improved, although it took some time before Flora allowed Bess, as she became for a while, to sleep anywhere near her. And quite right too: nobody wants a stranger in their bed – or do they? Poor Bess endured quite a lot of pecking at this time, eventually settling with her head hanging low to protect her face, looking such a sorry sight. But I was delighted when opening the nest boxes a few days later to find both crammed together into one which Flora had never used. It is said that possession is nine tenths of the law, and she needed to maintain her ownership. How there came to be three eggs in that nest one morning I will never know. As for a name – the poor newcomer was for a while Bess, but it did not suit her – I tried different names each day. My sister would enquire ‘who is she today?’ She became Miss Brown, Hilda, Polly, Molly until finally Dorothy fitted her persona, for she reminded me of the nursery rhyme: ‘To bed to bed says sleepy head, let’s stay a while said slow, put on the pot says greedy Dot let’s sup before we go.’ This hen never goes to bed without tucking into a hearty supper, whilst Flora waits on the perch. (Dot is of course a shortened version of Dorothy, which I preferred – apologies to all the Dot’s out there.) She is really is perfect and is like Ruby, my late hen, reincarnated as she looks exactly like her and automatically does the same things, as if she had been here for the four to five years Flora has. She walked across the yard to the garden for the first time with no problem as if she’d done it all her life. (I did have a bag of bread in my hand; she goes crazy for it.) She’s very keen to get in the house and Flora encourages her. I found the pair of them happily sitting on the kitchen mat by the sink. Unfortunately, it was Eric who spotted Dorothy strolling around on the carpet in the conservatory. Need I say more? If she sees me in there she taps the glass with her beak to get my attention. She can be destructive, as I discovered after finding a bale of straw, which had been in the run for three years, completely dismantled, strewn everywhere and two happy hens enjoying the fruits of their labour. (See the photo.) As we self-isolate, Flora can sympathise for she spent four months in quarantine during the dreadful bird flu epidemic when thousands of poultry were culled. It saved her, and I pray you will all come through this too. Maggy Chapman

44 Ketton Review Summer 2020 Matt Hancock MP writes

There is no getting away from the fact that living in the time of coronavirus has been the most challenging episode in our nation’s history for the past 75 years. There is no one who has been spared its effects. Some of us have lost loved ones or watched family members struggle to combat the virus. And the consequences of the devastating reach of the virus extend to people who have lost their businesses, people who have lost their jobs and those who are finding isolation difficult, either in practical terms or in terms of their mental health and well-being. And although I could go on and name a myriad other ways in which coronavirus has been devastating for us as a society, there are some reasons to be optimistic – blue patches in a sky of grey. One of the best examples is how communities have come together to support those in need. West Suffolk Council has a dedicated service, Home But Not Alone, which matches volunteers to those who need a helping hand. This kind of community spirit is replicated time and again through our churches and voluntary organisations, often organised via local social media. This is a pandemic and there are very few places in the world that are not fighting coronavirus, but the solutions to the problems people have are being dealt with on a local level. I’ve seen so much of the friends and neighbours who are delivering food to elderly and vulnerable residents, walking their dogs, collecting their prescriptions or just having a chat over the phone if they are lonely. We’ve seen local pubs and restaurants that now offer takeaway or meal delivery services, and other businesses which have quickly had to offer services to the community in a different way which follows social distancing rules. It is heartening to see the kindness of the human spirit when we help those around us. When this health crisis comes to an end, we will be most likely operating on a more local level again – at least for a while, as globalism is under pressure and we are reminded of the value of the local. This has been an incredibly challenging time for all of us, and it is not over yet. But in addition to the sadness and heartache that coronavirus has brought to all of us, there are some good things, as well. And during these difficult days we must concentrate on the good things – the kindness and generosity of those around us and the most wonderful people looking after our health and well being when we are ill. I cannot think of two better things to focus on during these dark days.

Ketton Review Summer 2020 47 Recycling for Charity – KCA

Glass Many of you will have used the two bottle banks at Kedington Community Centre to recycle your glass bottles and jars. Please keep doing so as it raises much needed money for the Centre. NB If the banks are full please do not leave your bottles around the banks as this impedes collection – bring them back later. Thank you.

Printer Cartridges Another way you can help to improve the Centre and Great Meadow is by recycling your empty inkjet printer cartridges. We receive a donation for each one sent in. You can either deposit them in a special box at the Community Centre or use one of our Freepost envelopes. Every little helps!

Clothes and Shoe Banks

We have two banks for recycling old clothes and shoes. These are situated beside the bottle banks. We receive an income from donations made so please do support us by using them to dispose of your unwanted items. Don’t just throw them away in your wheelie bin.

Mobile Phones We now collect old mobile phones. Please bring mobile phones and printer cartridges down to the Centre and place in the box provided in the kitchen area.

Thank you for your support Centre Caretaking Team
