To Whom Shall We Go? “To whom shall we go?” These words of Simon Peter in today’s Gospel, and the emotion behind them, are probably what ground me in my faith. We all have our doubts from time to time, emerging when life really gets difficult and we don’t hear the answer to the prayer that we have been pleading for over and over again, when one difficult thing piles on top of another in our family life and in our own Church’s life. But it always boils down to the same thing for me: “To whom shall we go?” Recently I had a conversation with a woman who, by all accounts, is an extremely faith- filled person. She sat in our church and told me how very beautiful it is and how it makes her feel so good when she comes. She then added, “Oh, I no longer go to the , I belong to a non-denominational church.” She went on to say that she admits to Dianne Fox coming to Church during Lent, especially Ash Wednesday and such, and that the beautiful Rites of the Church continue to touch her deeply. I followed with, “You can take the girl out of the Rites but you can’t take the Rites out of the girl?!” I wish that, at that moment, the Spirit had given me the courage to ask her why she doesn’t continue to come to the Catholic Church on a regular basis when she so firmly believes. What is keeping her away? I suppose I took consolation in sensing that in the most difficult times she still heard the voice of Simon Peter asking Jesus, “To whom shall we go?” So, what do I mean when I say that Simon Peter’s words ground me in my faith? The Sacrament of our Lord’s Body and Blood has always been the bottom line for me. I believe in it so deeply and at the same time, I feel like I couldn’t even consider walking away from it without first coming to a true and complete belief and understanding of it. A contradiction, I know, but I think sometimes that that piece of faith, the one that compels me to say, “I believe Lord; help me in my unbelief,” is a true gift from the Holy Spirit and the one that gives me the courage to continue my faith journey when others walk away. I thank my parents, but most especially my father, for my undying courage to call myself a Roman Catholic. But my siblings had the same parents—why has their faith journey been different? I can only thank the Holy Spirit (and I do!) for this. There are times when I wonder if my life could be easier if I just walked away from it all, relying only upon myself. But who am I kidding? Why would it be easier? Because I wouldn’t have to go to Church every Sunday? (Well, in all seriousness, I would have to find a completely different line of work, too, and I can’t even fathom that!) But I believe that my life is easier because of my faith. The faith that allows me to sense the presence of the Lord when I sit in silence and call upon him. The faith that allows me to turn, even ever so stingily with my time, in prayer to ask for blessings upon a friend, family or a situation because it makes me feel less powerless to help them. The faith that allows me to see the good that God has done by creating each of us and giving us this beautiful world. The faith that allows me to know the tears of sadness from our Lord when a tragedy hits—while others are cursing him for “allowing it to happen.” So, "As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD," (Jos 24:15), because in all honesty, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." (Jn 6:68)
