Implementation Status and Key Decisions
The project remains relevant to the Gansu Huaxia Cultural Heritage Initiative of 2013 and the World Bank Group-China Country Partnership Strategy. It is making progress and is on track to conserve cultural and natural heritage, enhance tourism services, and improve community services in selected project sites in Gansu Province. The Gansu Provincial Government and participating project Counties and Districts have consistently shown strong commitment to the project throughout implementation and have given high priority to activities in support of reaching the Project’s Development Objective. After project restructuring in June 2020, project progress has been further accelerated and major barriers have been Public Disclosure Authorized removed. With the launching of additional activities, the project’s impact is expected to be enhanced. On the ground achievements to-date include 5 management plans adopted and fully funded by county budgets, 97 tourism-related small businesses supported by new community organizations, an increase in the spending by tourists in project sites of 2074 RMB/tourist, 3,820,000 visitors to project-supported tourist sites, and 29,366 people in project areas with improved access to community services – all exceeding the planned results for 2020.
