W Y T One thing in common with successful online students is that they communicate with their teacher. The ability tock/thinkstock and willingness to communicate with your teachers is paramount to your success! Your teachers are real people and truly want to see you succeed. Ximagination, iS Ximagination,

With that said, it is important that you communicate with your teacher(s) regularly. Because you are not in a face‐to‐face , your teacher will not be able to "sense" that you are having problems by the look on your face. It is important that you keep your teacher "in the loop" if you have questions or concerns. In each of your courses, click the link “Teacher Introduction & Contact Information” page to access your teacher's contact information.

Teachers are dedicated to answering your questions usually within 24-48 hours.

B S O Dedicate some time now to learn how you can succeed in your online course. Success takes effort and de‐ termination. Regardless of where or what you are learning, succeeding is a priority. What are some attrib‐ utes and skills that are needed for you to succeed? Besides effort and determination, you must:  Possess a positive attitude—This means that you believe in yourself and know that you have the capacity to learn.  Have self-motivation—Be willing to put forth your best effort each and every day.  Know when to get help— Your teachers are available to help you and they are a great source of information. Always remem‐ ber that there is no such thing as a “dumb” question. moodboard, moodboard/thinkstock  Be disciplined—Learning takes time and concentration. There are going to be times when you would rather be doing something else instead of doing your . If you want to succeed, you need to devote the time to your education. Pro athletes do not become a overnight phenomena. It takes years of practice and attention to every detail to hone their talents so that they can attain their aspirations of being a professional athlete.  Learn the Netiquette rules— Just like in your face‐to‐face classroom there are some basic rules that you must follow in your online classroom:  Be aware — watch what you write/say and how you write/say it. Use of profanity is strictly prohibit‐ ed. Consider the tone of your message and be respectful; use words like please and thank you. Jokes, sarcasm, excessive use of emoji's and acronyms can easily be misunderstood especially in online com‐ munications. No name calling or posting of offensive pictures or comments (cyberbullying).  Dress for success— wear appropriate attire during live synchronous sessions, remember your im‐ age is being transmitted to your teacher and classmates. For example, no pajamas.  The written word— do not type in all caps, it is considered shouting and is dificult to read. Use proper punctuation, spelling and grammar. Use the chat for course topics, not as a personal chat dur‐ ing live synchronous sessions. Mostly read and think before you respond to posts/chats.

C OMMUNICATION METHODS

Your teachers are not only subject matter experts in their chosen ields, but are generally very knowledgeable on the use of computers and our online learning environment. Think of your teachers as your irst point of contact when you need help with your coursework or have problems navigating your courses.

Contact your teacher when you do not understand:

 the instructions for an assignment, or have a question about when, where, or how to submit an assignment  a concept in your reading  a question on an exam Of course, you should feel free to contact your teacher with any question. If he/she cannot answer it, they will give you the information you need to contact the appropriate person(s) or department. Your teacher is dedicated to answering your questions within 48 hours of the time you contact them.

Emailing Your Teacher Calling Your Teacher If you are letting your teacher know Your teacher will provide you with

C OMMUNICATION METHODS

Using Instant Messaging A primary method to contact your teacher is through the Google Hangouts Instant Messaging system.  Check for messages every day you have class. You do not want to miss an important communication!  Leave messages for others when they are ofline so they can get back with you when they login. Review the Google Hangout Instructions at: https://content.dodea.edu/VS/HS/orientation/docs/google_hangout_instructions.pdf https://content.dodea.edu/VS/HS/summer/orientation/google_hangouts_demo.

Recording Your Voice At times, you will be asked to record your voice for an assignment or to ask your teacher a question. In order to do this, you will need to have a microphone. Sometimes you may rec‐ ord directly into Schoology, other times you may need to use recording software. The rec‐ ommended software for both Windows and Macintosh operating systems is Audacity. Au‐ IconAudacity Headset dacity should be installed on your school computer. Watch the Audacity Demonstration to learn how to download the program for home use: https://content.dodea.edu/VS/HS/orientation/interactives/technology_audio/index.html

Synchronous Sessions Adobe Connect Your teacher may use an Adobe Connect web‐ site, communication tool that provides a syn- chronous (same time) learning environ‐ ment. This tool provides a way to talk to and meet with your teachers as if you are really in the same room! In fact, if your computer has a microphone and speakers, you can talk to your teacher and classmates just as you would on the telephone. You can use Adobe Connect at school or at home.

To learn more about Adobe Connect go to the following link: Adobe Connect Entry Screen https://content.dodea.edu/VS/HS/orientation/interactives/adobeconnect/index.html If you have the opportunity to meet with your teacher and other classmates in an Adobe Connect session, we encourage you to try it!

Schoology Course Mate iS Designer491,

Schoology Learning Management System (LMS) DoDEA Virtual High School (DVHS ) courses are delivered via the Schoology Learning Management System (LMS). You can think of an LMS as the virtual classroom; it is the space where you ind the information for your course, including content, assignments, resources, quizzes and exams, and online discussions. School‐ ogy not only delivers content and assessments to you, but it is a tool for you to use to turn in your work to teachers. Teachers have many ways to provide feedback on assignments and tests, in addition to discussion boards and communication tools. After logging into Schoology, you can locate your courses from the Courses navigation bar. The image above depicts a typical course Materials page. Links to Teacher Contact Information, Course Information and Grad- ing Polices, and some helpful resources can be found on this page. Course content and materials, along with assignments , quizzes, and discussions, are located in the Classroom folder. Discussions A discussion board is a tool which allows you, your classmates, and your teacher to conduct an online discussion. Your class can read all the messages, both old and new at any time. Discussion board assignments are usually graded. You will “post” your relections/ answers to a question prompt or topic. A discussion is made up of the following:

 Forums ‐ folders containing messages on a particular subject iStock/thinkstock  Threads ‐ a thread is a series of messages about the same topic  Messages ‐ each message is an individual contribution to a con‐ versation (like a single e‐mail). Discussions allow you to think more critically about concepts. Addi‐ Marina Zlochin, tionally, through open discussion with classmates you further solidify your understanding by seeing infor‐ mation presented in a different way. Discussions are usually graded assignments. In many discussion assign‐ ments, you will read and respond to other students' answers. This provides an opportunity for relection. Discussion Etiquette Free of profanity, derogatory comments, or making inappropriate comments or bad language. It is ok to disagree, and often a great way to learn, but no personal attacks. No bullying. No bullying! Be nice, positive and respectful – particularly when in response to a classmate’s post. Posts should be in academic writing (proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalization). No IM language ‐ avoid slang. Choose to learn about your peers. You can really get to know each other through discussions. Be willing to learn, share ideas, and change!

How is a Discussion Post done? Discussion assignments will be availa‐ ble within Schoology inside the course folders. Click a discussion link to open the instructions and to read the ques‐ tion prompt. A text editor is available for typing responses. Choose “Reply” when responding to posts from class‐ mates.

Under the Grades link, a list of assignments, quizzes, tests (completed and uncompleted) are shown. Complet‐ ed and graded assignments/tests will include the Grade, Maximum Points, and possibly instruc‐ tor Feedback /Comments in the right column. Clicking the name of an assignment jumps you to that assignment in the Classroom folder. There you can locate additional feedback that may have been added directly in the assignment submission documents and/or in the right side panel of the assignment submission page. Jess Yu. What is a Rubric? A rubric provides guidelines that the teacher will use to score various

assignments. It describes where and how you earn points. Rubrics are most often used for projects, papers, or presentations, and may be provided along with assignment information on a lesson page or as an attachment. You should refer back to a rubric often as you complete an assignment to be certain that

you are satisfying all of the requirements at the highest level. Slobodkin, iStock/thinks Slobodkin, Why is a rubric used to evaluate your students work? It is always a good idea to read a rubric thoroughly before an assignment is started for a couple of reasons: 1. You will have a clearer understanding of how to complete the assignment; 2. You will know how to get the best grade possible!

How do you interpret a rubric? When reading a rubric for the first time, it’s always a good idea to look at the column with the highest score or points to know immediately how to earn the highest score. 1. If the work meets the expectations in the highest number column, then the highest score is obtained! 2. If work doesn’t quite meet the highest expectations (yet), go to the next number down and see if the qualities listed there more closely reflect your work. If they do, and the work hasn’t been turned in yet, make

the needed changes to meet the highest score.

DVHS Attendance Policy Because of the compressed nature of summer school, absences are highly discour‐ aged. Each missed day is the equivalent of missing 3 days during a regular semes‐ ter. If an absence does occur, the student is responsible for making up all missed work. This needs to be done as soon as possible to avoid late work penalties and to avoid getting behind in the course.

Please contact your instructor immediately if you believe you need more time to complete an assignment or if you need to discuss a plan for making up missed work. In the event of a planned absence, students must inform the instructor in advance.

Late Policy Please refer to the Course Information and Grading Policies page under your course(s) Materials page for speci‐ ic information about late work. There are no extensions in summer school for inishing the course. DVHS Logo

A CADEMIC INTEGRITY

What does the DVHS Academic Integrity Policy Cover? The DoDEA accreditation agency, Cognia, requires the DVHS to have assurances that academic integrity exists within our courses. DVHS students are expected to do their own work and to have integrity. Work submitted to any course should be the individual’s best effort rather than someone else’s work. DoDEA Virtual High School operates under the expectation that all students will hold to academic standards that are both ethical and honest; thus, any sort of academic dishonesty is VIPDesignUSA, iStock/thinkstock.com prohibited. Though this list is not all‐inclusive, plagiarism, cheating, copying the work of another student, using a translator in a foreign language course, or copying answers from the internet are all examples of academic dishonesty. Using technology for illicit purposes, or any unauthorized communication between students for the purpose of gaining advantage for coursework or during an examination, is strictly prohibited. You are encouraged to work with your peers through the use of interactive technologies such as instant messaging, discussion boards, blogs, and wikis as needed; however, all assignments submitted to your instructor should be your original work.

Violating Academic Integrity Any violation of the DoDEA Virtual High School’s policy of Academic Integrity can result in severe consequences. Any cheating or copying can result in an administrative referral and a possible grade reduction to include a zero for the assignment.

P LAGIARISM

Using Translation Software in World Language Courses Using translation software that converts English words to a target language and/or from a target language to English to answer questions during a test or to complete an assign‐ ment in a World Language course is considered a form of plagiarism, and it is cheating.

This technology is not perfect, meaning that some signii‐ tpressureUA, iStock/thinkstock.com cant mistranslations will almost always occur. Most often teachers can recognize the use of such pro‐grams because of the characteristic "feel" of computer translations and the typical errors that occur. Frequently two students from op‐ posite sides of the country will submit identical pieces, which is a dead giveaway for the teacher.

Misuse of Copy & Paste One of the most common errors made when using tech‐ nology is the gross misuse of "copy and paste". This can include text and images. ALL wording for assignments

MUST be your own work. The teacher may search databases to identify cases of "copy and paste" from web sites. Teachers may use an originality checking software such as Turnitin. As easily as it may be to ind information and copy it, it is just as easy for the teacher to locate the source. Simply chang‐ tpressureUA, iStock/thinkstock.com ing a word here or there using the thesaurus does not hide the overall pilfering of content from an external source.

You should make a point to use your own words. Anytime an image is used from the internet, you must cite the source with at minimum, the author, the title, the date retrieved and the inclusion of the web address.

Implications Should students have a question about any of these topics, have them ask their teacher before turning in something that they may be uncertain about. nimon_t, iStock/thinkstock.com

R ESEARCH & CITATION RESOURCES

DoDEA Virtual High School Library Many times you will need to include the work of other people in your papers or projects. There is nothing wrong with this

practice as long as proper credit is given to the original au‐ MackinVia Logo thor or creator.

You can use the online library to do research to ind information on various topics. The DoDEA Virtual High School (DVHS) eLibrary collection includes iction and non‐iction eBook titles and curriculum reference materi‐ als selected speciically to support DVHS curriculum and instruction.

Citation Resources There are a number of places for you to go for information about citing sources (giving credit to someone whose work you used) but your school media center person is the best and clos‐ est source.

You need to tell who wrote or created what you are using, who did it originally, and when and where it was published. The best rule of thumb is that if you are in doubt about whether or not to cite a source, cite it. And, in case you were not aware, there are commercially available “plagiarism‐ighting” tools on‐line that make it easy to check for plagiarize information.
