Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East 580 Sainte-Croix, Suite 050 Saint-Laurent, QC H4L 3X5 December 3, 2020 Hon. Stephen Lecce Minister of Education 5th Floor, 438 University Ave. Toronto, ON M5G 2K8 Also sent by email to [email protected] Dear Hon. Stephen Lecce, I am writing to you as Vice President of the Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME, www.cjpme.org), a national non-profit organization concerned with issues of justice, development and peace in the Middle East. I’m deeply concerned with how you have handled an educational video blog, produced by a student and included in a tenth-grade civics course, which features a Palestinian point of view. I am aware that you have banned school boards from showing this video, which you have described as “anti-Israel and antisemitic.” This is an inaccurate description of the video’s content, and an unacceptable way to treat Palestinian perspectives in the classroom. I have reviewed the video blog in question, and while it does reflect a specifically Palestinian point of view, I did not find there to be any unacceptable or racist content. Instead, in the video the student discusses the “current occupation of the Palestinian land by the Zionists,” who are said to have “violated the human rights of the Palestinians.” This is not controversial: • Zionism is the political ideology of the state of Israel. Merriam-Webster, for example, defines Zionism as “an international movement originally for the establishment of a Jewish national or religious community in Palestine and later for the support of modern Israel.” A political movement launched in the 19th century, Zionism eventually led to the emigration of hundreds of thousands of (mostly European) Jews to Palestine through the mid-20th century.

  • January 11, 2021 the Honourable Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario The
January 11, 2021 The Honourable Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario The Honourable Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education To the Honourable Doug Ford and the Honourable Stephen Lecce, On Wednesday, January 6, 2021, the Halton District School Board unanimously approved the following resolution: Be it resolved that the Board of Trustees direct the Chair to write a letter asking the Minister of Education and Premier of Ontario to expedite facilitating high speed internet connectivity to increase equitable access in rural and remote areas. The Regional Municipality of Halton is close to 1000 km2 in area and large swaths of the region are rural. Many families in these areas (North Burlington and rural Milton and Halton Hills) have little access to reliable high-speed internet service, or when it is available, it is cost prohibitive to acquire and maintain. This has produced a growing and concerning inequity in access to education across the Halton District School Board. Many students have been unable to access synchronous virtual learning as mandated by the Ministry of Education. Band-aid solutions of cellular access hubs are expensive for the board to acquire and distribute, and require 5-7 days in lead-time to process and distribute to our families. Cellular signals are not always available or strong enough in areas of Halton for a hub to be a viable solution for all families in need. Due to the delayed closure announcement of in-person learning until after the holidays had begun, the hub acquisition process could not begin until January 4. With the January 2, 2021 letter from the Minister confirming a January 11, 2021 return to class date as well as the noted processing delay, it was logical for the board not to pursue this avenue when hubs would not arrive until after elementary students had returned to in-person learning.

  • “It Would Be Easier for Me Professionally — for Us As a Group — If We Were Able to Speak Freely.”
Queen’s Park Today – Daily Report November 18, 2020 Quotation of the day “It would be easier for me professionally — for us as a group — if we were able to speak freely.” A member of the province's public health measures table tells the Globe it's crucial that Ontarians are shown clear criteria for future lockdowns. Today at Queen’s Park Written by Sabrina Nanji On the schedule The house reconvenes at 9 a.m. The NDP will put forward an Opposition Day motion calling on the Ford government to condemn "the extreme and hateful invective" of Charles McVety and to block any efforts (such as the government's own legislation) to give the Canada Christian College university status. However, NDP Leader Andrea Horwath won't be in the house to debate her motion. The NDP had asked for unanimous consent to swap out her motion for another date since Horwath has a foot surgery scheduled at the same time — but the government shot it down. Later on, PC MPP Deepak Anand will move second reading of his private member's bill aimed at preventing "gas and dash" deaths by requiring customers to pre-pay before filling up at the gas pump. That's Bill 231, Protecting Ontarians by Enhancing Gas Station Safety to Prevent Gas and Dash Act. The government could also call any of the following bills for morning and afternoon debate: ● Bill 229, Protect, Support and Recover from COVID-19 Act (the omnibus budget measures bill); and ● Bill 213, Better for People, Smarter for Business Act (the red-tape reduction legislation that also gives McVety's Canada Christian College expanded degree-granting powers).
