  • Bishop Martin Marty September 19Th Is the Anniversary of the Death of Bishop Martin Marty
Bishop Martin Marty September 19th is the anniversary of the death of Bishop Martin Marty. Aloys Marty was born in the town of Schwyz, Canton Schwyz, Switzerland, on January 13, 1834. He began his higher studies in Fribourg with the Jesuits. As a student he learned of the work of the Jesuit priest, Father Pierre De Smet, promoter of the Jesuit missions in the Rocky Mountains of North America. Father De Smet's missionary work aroused in the young Marty a desire to work among the Indians. In 1848, after the expulsion of the Jesuits in Europe, Aloys Marty continued his course of studies with the Benedictines at Einsiedeln. He professed his vows as a monk of the Abbey of Maria Einsiedeln on May 20, 1855, receiving the name Martin. He was ordained to the priesthood on September 14, 1856. After ordination, he was first assigned as a teacher in the Gymnasium at Einsiedeln. Later, he was transferred to teach- ing moral theology. In September of 1860, he was sent to the United States to assist at the newly founded monastery of St. Meinrad in Indiana. In 1865 he was appointed prior of St. Meinrad. When the foundation was raised to the status of an abbey on September 30, 1870, Pope Pius IX ap- pointed Father Martin Marty the first abbot. It was during Abbot Martin's abbacy that our monastery was founded by St. Meinrad Abbey on March 15, 1878. On August 12, 1879, Abbot Martin Marty was appointed Vicar Apostolic of the Dakota Territory and was consecrated bishop on February 1, 1880.

Because of its huge extent, diversity of wetland habitats and still largely traditional land use patterns, the mire landscape of Rothenthurm is probably unique in pre-Alpine Europe. Apart from their function as a habitat for relic species from glacial times, the mires of Rothenthurm serve as one of the last staging grounds for waders and other migratory birds flying south over the Alps. 127 1000 m Quaternary deposits D (mainly peatlands) Maximum and late Wiirm moraines Moraine ridges: Early Wiirm moraines - - Ziirich stade Lower freshwater molasse Fig. 3.1.3. • Brother Norbert Zwyssig October 2Nd Is the Anniversary of the Death of Brother Norbert Zwyssig
Brother Norbert Zwyssig October 2nd is the anniversary of the death of Brother Norbert Zwyssig. Joseph Zwyssig was born in Gersau, Canton Schwyz, Switzerland, on June 25, 1895. After two years of primary school under the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Joseph went to work at the age of 13 in a silk fac- tory in his home-town. A year later, the attraction of monastic life began to draw him. Too young to apply for admittance as a monk, he went to Einsiedeln abbey at age 14 to work until he should be old enough to enter. There, while working in the abbey kitchen, he became acquainted with Brother Meinrad Eugster, a diabetic monk who came regularly to receive his dietary meals in the kitchen. Brother Meinrad is now being proposed for canonization. Reaching his mid-teens, and impressed by the Bene- dictine life at Einsiedeln, Joseph Zwyssig asked to be admitted as a candidate. The superiors suggested that he consider joining the community at Subiaco. Three men from Gersau, Switzerland, had already come to Subiaco via Einsiedeln; namely: Brother Gabriel Riegert, Father John Nigg, and Brother Andrew Zwyssig, the uncle of Joseph Zwyssig. At the age of 16, Joseph decided to join them. He came to the United States, arriving at Subiaco on November 11, 1911, or "eleven-eleven-eleven" as he liked to say it. Still too young to take religious vows, Joseph spent three years as a candidate and one year as a novice. He was still underage for profession and it was necessary for him to obtain a dispensation in order to make his vows.

My analysis of regional inequality rests on a heuristic model featuring an initial growth impulse in one or several core regions and subsequent diffusion. As a consequence of the existence of multiple core regions Swiss regional inequality has been comparatively low at higher geographical levels. Spatial diffusion of economic growth has occurred across different parts of the country and within different labor market regions at the same time. This resulted in a bell- shape evolution of regional inequality at the micro regional level and convergence at higher geographical levels. In early and in late stages of the development process, productivity differentials were the main drivers of inequality, whereas economic structure was determinant between 1888 and 1941.
