The Year That Was Transition Transition Projects Annual Report Projects Fiscal year 2016-2017

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR‘S MESSAGE

Dear Friend, Increasing by 10% between 2015 and 2017, Portland’s homeless population is now not only larger, but includes more people who are older, disabled, and experiencing homelessness for longer. Clearly, we have a long way to go in addressing our area’s crisis around homelessness and the lack of affordable housing. Nevertheless, in recent years Portland and Multnomah County have made impressive strides. By bringing renewed energy and historic investments to bear, our community succeeded in helping more people than ever before end their homelessness and regain housing. Transition Projects is proud to have played a key role in this effort. By the close of the 2016-17 fiscal year, Transition Projects was providing more support to more people than at any time in the agency’s nearly 50-year history. With your help, we significantly expanded our services, focusing particular attention on assisting veterans, engaging people living on the streets, and offering low barrier, “come as you are” shelter options to men, women and couples with nowhere else to turn. As a result of these efforts, we successfully: • Led Portland’s drive to effectively end veteran homelessness • Helped achieve a 12% reduction in unsheltered homelessness in our community by adding hundreds of new shelter beds • Placed nearly 1,100 people into housing (a 34% increase over the previous year) • Provided shelter to nearly 4,200 people (an 88% increase over the previous year) • Helped ensure passage of Portland’s first-ever affordable housing bond measure But as hard as our team worked during 2016-17, we know that none of these accomplishments would have been possible without the generosity and encouragement of friends like you. Whether you volunteered, donated clothing, or wrote a check, you helped make a critical difference in the lives of those struggling to escape the streets. On behalf of our team and those we serve each day, thank you!
