Front Cover: Photos from the VCE Outdoor Education hike to Thurra River. Principal’s Page end of term

Thanks to all for a wonderful term three, though we have fin- ished with more students ill than we’ve seen before, I hope everyone is recovering well!

The parent surveys have been released: we had a 66% re- sponse rate: all very positive: with 100% positive support for a range of measures: I’d like to thank all parents and guardi- ans for their support for the school. And to staff, who con- tinue to work so hard and believe in the importance of what they do.

Special note this week to year 11 students Chris Mongta and Adon Watson who presented very well to the District Community Reference Group in regard to the professional level of work they are doing with the shire. They were knowledgeable and able to explain the complex design deci- sions they have made. top right

School days sometimes have good surprises ‘Bondi to Bright- on ‘bike ride visited the school last week -it was a fund rais- ing to support dementia research—our students were won- derfully involved in discussions with riders. pictured

Term four is in our minds now: with VCE exams, ( year 12 students will be coming in over holidays to prepare) planning for year 3-6 major excursion, the play, staff and students consolidating their year’s learning. And planning for building program for next year.

Senior students are currently working on career pathways and we hope to catch up with all secondary level parents in term four to discuss how we can best help students establish and achieve heir goals.

Don’t forget the Art show at The Community Centre this weekend. EVERY DAY COUNTS! Please contact the school if your child is going to be away.

MY FISHING PRIZE

On the holidays in Batemans Bay on Saturday night I won 1st place in a fishing comp. I won a plaque with my name on it and with the prize I got $ 75 dollar voucher.

The prize was for catching a flathead. I caught one that was 64cm. I was in the boat with Dad. I’d just got a little fish before I caught the big flat head. I was watching the rod and the flathead play with the bait. Trying not to grab the rod and risk scaring off the fish. I was patient and I waited for him to take the bait, and he did. And he wasn’t giving up without a fight, I know that. He took off and didn’t stop running. He did three big circles and took off again. I finally tired him out and wound him back in. The weekend before I caught a 53 centimetre flathead not far from where I got this one. I weighed in the 64cm fish to put in the competition. Several months later, I won a trophy.

On the presentation night I had roast pork and roast vegetables, nuggets and chips. My sister and I won a lot of raffle prizes. I had crunchy ice cream with sticky date pudding and I also had chocolate cake. There also was a lucky door prize and my mate’s mum got it. On the table where we were sitting there were connect 4 and colouring in. In the raffle prizes there was a lot of fishing gear, a boy got a lot of prizes.

My best mate won a trophy with a plaque for deep sea fishing. When my name was called out I was as happy as a man who won the lottery.

BY JOSH THE DEEP BLUE SEA I must go down to the beach again, To watch the waves crashing, And when I hear the waves pass, They sound like they are bashing, The rocks the shells the sand and foam, They form one line of fluff, As I watch the sunset, I must go down... I never have enough, I must go down to the house today By Hailey Gardner To get my mother’s hair And all I need is her password So i can find her secret lair Full of books and secret plans My life at the beach And wigs from lots of bears It’s silent and still She got them from an old witch Can you hear the waves With creepy and creaky stairs Crashing against By Nicole the shore By Hailey Gardner Wakeboarding

Across the glistening shine on the luke warm water, The light breeze looking in on me, I am ready to go walking on water at dusk, The suspense is driving me wild, I opened my eyes, I gave the signal, I was up, on my feet, gliding fast.

By Brooke A Comparison Of Electrolytic Concentration And Energy Production.

The Unit 4 Chemistry Class is currently undertaking their final research projects.

Here we see current being produced by an electrochemical cell known as a Daniel Cell. When different concentrations of Copper Sulfate are used, different values of current are produced.

When the voltage is also measured the amount of energy produced can be calculated.

East Table Tennis Competition at Bairnsdale On Thursday September 5th Year 7/8 Cann River students travelled to Bairnsdale to partici- pate in the Secondary School Table Tennis. The Cann River Year 7/8 team consisted of, Abbey de Senna- Clark, Ruby Stork, Gus Crannaford, David Mongta-Porter and Jack Connley. Unfortu- nately the students only had team to play Nagle. The matches were very close with both teams winning 3 each it came down to games won. Nagle won 10 games to 9. The students played well in each match and were unlucky not to win on the day. VCE OE Thurra River Camp The VCE OE class headed to Thurra River campground on Wednesday, September 11th the trip had been reorganised after the initial plan to walk from Wingan Inlet to had to be abandoned be- cause the Wilderness Coast Walk was closed. The students were not too disappointed to exchange a pack hike for a base camp. The weather over the three days was fantastic. We completed several short walks in the area, including Mt Everard approximately 8 km return from where the bus was parked. A walk and rock hop along the coast towards the Light House, the spectacular dunes walk returning via the Thurra River, a walk to the Thurra River entrance and finally on the last day a walk along Bald Hills Track to the Mueller River. The camp enabled students to connect to the theory we had been studying in class things such as the importance of natural environments for biodiversity, recre- ation and intrinsic value and also to analyse some of the management strategies that are used in the park to keep it healthy. We were fortunate to observe lots of plants in flower and a wide range of fauna species including whales, brushtail possum with its baby, two red -bellied black snakes and some hood plover on the beach at Mueller River. Thanks to Nigel Royce who assisted on the camp and the stu- dents: Dechlan Tutty, Anna Crawford, Shanise Mongta-Porter, Adon Watson, Sarskia Suther- land and Chris Mongta. L Spink

VCE Product Design and Technology Unit 2 Collaborative Design Adon and Chris presented their version of the Wifi Bar to the Community Representation Panel on Tuesday night. Their audience were our community leaders and East Gippsland Shire representative, Sueanne Claringbold who will be financing and overseeing the Project. This is an excellent opportunity for them to gain professional experience as Designer / makers contracting to a Government body, whilst at High School, and will be a wonderful addition to their resumes, when they leave school. This is all about creating pathways for our students beyond VCE in the creative industries. Chris and Adon have done a power of work in coming up with 4 different designs at 2 locations, and have presented their designs to the other students at school to identify the most popular option. Their concept is to create a safe youth hangout space that is within range of the free Community Centre Wifi, and is also a benefit to other users such as public transport users, travellers and other locals. Their concept is of an outdoor lounge area that is conducive to social interaction and suitable for individuals and small groups to relax and enjoy the park. It is adjacent to the toilets, easily accessible to the bus stop, and overlooks the playground. It is also well lit, openly public for safety reasons, has been designed so there are no entrapment issues, and animal nesting should not become an issue.
