UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS BOSTON Commencement 2007

FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 2007 The University Mace Symbols of authority and power, maces were originally hand weapons for use against armor. Traditionally carried in processions at formal academic events, they evoke the history and ideals of the institutions they represent. The staff of the University of Massachusetts Boston mace is fluted mahogany; its foot is brass. At its top, in a mahogany surround on a blue granite base, stands a bronze disk bearing the university seal, consisting of the arms of Massachusetts encircled by the university's name and its date of founding, 1964. Reflecting the incorporation of Boston State College into the university in 1982, the bronze sides of the seal's base bear the names and dates of that college and its five predecessor institutions, the first of which was founded in 1852.

Academic Costume and Regalia The academic regalia worn by faculty and students at this ceremony represent traditions which come down from the Middle Ages, when European universities were institutions of the church. At that time, robes were a common form of dress, particularly for officials of church and state. The cut of the robe, its adornment, and the colors used comprised a specialized that conveyed the rank and station of the wearer. At the universities, both faculty and students were considered to be part of the church hierarchy and were expected to wear the prescribed gowns. As society moved toward more modern forms of dress, only royalty, clergy, judges, and academics retained the traditional regalia, reserving it only for ceremonial use.

Modern academic regalia retain some of the symbols of the earlier forms of ceremonial dress. The gown tends to be fullest, longest, and heaviest for the doctoral degree. The sleeves for the bachelor's and master's gowns are typically open at the wrist. Cuffs are more common on the doctoral gown, and its sleeves are adorned by three velvet strips, symbolic of the degree. The mantle worn about the shoulders, called the hood, is the remnant of functional headgear worn for warmth in the unheated classrooms of medieval universities. Today its colors refer to the school that granted the degree and the level discipline of the degree (e.g., navy blue for PhD, pink for music).

The usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. However, many universities in this country and many others throughout the world have adopted more colorful robes. In general, this practice has been limited to schools more than one hundred years old. Among the schools represented by colorful robes at commencement ceremonies are Boston College, Boston University, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, New York, Oxford, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Tufts, and Yale Universities, and the Universities of California, Kansas, and Rhode Island.

Honorary Degrees and the For centuries, universities have awarded honorary degrees as ways of recognizing Chancellor's Medal extraordinary achievement and affirming institutional values. Our own university's policy is typical: the recipients of honorary degrees "shall be persons of great accomplishment and high ethical standards who exemplify the ideals of the University of Massachusetts"; recipients may not, however, hold federal or state elective office in Massachusetts. The Chancellor's Medal is a similarly high honor, presented to "distinguished leaders, both in the public and the private sectors, and to outstanding members of our campus community, in recognition of meritorious service to the University and the Commonwealth."

Please Note: This program is for ceremonial purposes. The official list of graduates is maintained by the university registrar. UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS BOSTON Commencement 2007

3 Clementina M. Chery Clementina (Tina) Chery has dedicated her life to ending gun and gang violence in Recipient of the Boston, and to giving victims' survivors a voice. She is president and CEO of the Louis Chancellor's Medal D. Brown Peace Institute, an outreach, training, and resource center founded in memory of her son, who in 1993, at fifteen years of age, was shot and killed near his home in Dorchester. Under her direction, the institute has forged a multilevel agenda of nonviolence, operating as a partner to the City of Boston, the academic community, and grassroots organizations citywide.

The institute provides more than 10,000 people with services every year. Its Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) program offers emotional support and advocacy to families of murder victims. The institute has also developed the Louis D. Brown Peace Curriculum, a nationally recognized initiative that encourages young people to avoid violence and promotes activities that instill values and enrich community members' lives.

Ms. Chery's efforts to stem street violence go well beyond her work with the Peace Institute. Her annual Mothers' Walk for Peace brings together people from across Massachusetts for a 3.6-mile Mother's Day stroll through Dorchester, intended as a reminder of the need for community members to work together to keep their neighborhoods safe. She is also a founding member and past president of the National Coalition for Survivors of Violence Prevention, an organization created to influence national policy-making on violence prevention.

Currently, she is working directly with disadvantaged Boston-area young men, showing how education, healing, and compromise can help them lead productive lives. She is also a full-time student at Springfield College; with a major in human services and a minor in criminal justice, she hopes to place her firsthand experience of street crime within a context of theory and research.

We honor Ms. Chery for her strength of character in the face of personal tragedy, and for her success in turning grief into an instrument of positive social change in the neighborhoods of Boston.

Robert K. Kraft Robert Kraft, founder of the Kraft Group and since 1994 owner of the National Doctor of Laws Football League's (NFL's) New England Patriots, is one of the region's most prominent entrepreneurs. Over the past three decades, the Kraft family has been one of New England's most philanthropic, donating millions of dollars in support of charities and civic affairs. Few owners in the history of U.S. professional sports have experienced the level of success enjoyed by the Kraft family.

A Brookline native, Kraft attended local public schools before enrolling in Columbia University on an academic scholarship. After graduating from Columbia, he received a fellowship to attend Harvard Business School, where he earned a master's in business administration.

He began his business career with the Rand-Whitney Group of Worcester, a company he later acquired. In 1972, he founded International Forest Products, a trader of paper commodities that today does business in eighty-two countries. Together, Rand-Whitney and International Forest Products comprise one of the largest privately owned paper and packaging companies in the United States. They are also the core of the Kraft Group, founded in 1998 as a holding company for the family's business interests, which include Rand-Whitney Containerboard, the New England Revolution soccer team, and a portfolio of some thirty private equity investments.

The New England Patriots are viewed by many as a model NFL franchise, and Kraft is one of the league's most influential and respected owners. After taking ownership of the team, he immediately provided the financial resources needed to field a squad that could contend for a championship, restoring interest in the team throughout New England. In his twelve years as owner, the Patriots have won three Super Bowls, four conference championships, and six division championships-a record of success that led Forbes magazine to name the Patriots "The Best Team in Sports" in 2005.

We honor Robert Kraft for the magnanimity and generosity he has shown in support of civic causes throughout New England, and for his many contributions to the region's economic vitality and sense of identity.

4 Deval Patrick Deval Patrick was elected governor of Massachusetts in November of 2006. The first Recipient of the African-American to hold the state's highest office, he brings to the post a range of Chancellor's Medal leadership experience in government and the private sector. He has built his political career on a message of hope, community, and hard work, and as governor he has vowed to foster transparency and inclusion in public life to increase civic engagement the foundation, he believes, of shared progress in areas such as education, health care, and economic development.

Arriving in the Commonwealth from Chicago at the age of fourteen, he attended Milton Academy on a scholarship, then enrolled at Harvard, the first in his family to attend college. He graduated from Harvard with honors in 1978, then spent a year working on a UN-sponsored youth training project in the Darfur region of Sudan before returning to Boston to attend Harvard Law School.

After law school, he served as a law clerk and later took a position with the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. He joined the Boston law firm Hill & Barlow in 1986 and was named partner in 1990. In 1994, as President Clinton's Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, the top civil rights post in the nation, he devoted his energies to the prosecution of hate crimes, employment discrimination, enforcement of fair-lending laws, and other issues.

He has served on the boards of many corporations and charitable organizations, on the Federal Election Reform Commission under Presidents Carter and Ford, and as vice chair of the Massachusetts Judicial Nominating Council by appointment of Governor Weld. In 1997, a federal district court appointed him as the first chair of Texaco's Equality and Fairness Task Force, which examined and reformed Texaco's employment culture and produced a model for an equitable workplace.

We honor Deval Patrick for his commitment over many years to equality of opportunity and improved political access for all people, and for making those and similar ideals the principles by which he leads the Commonwealth as governor.

Henri A. Termeer Henri Termeer is president, CEO, and chairman of Genzyme Corporation, a Doctor of Science biotechnology company with headquarters in Cambridge. Under his guidance, his firm has done pioneering work worldwide in the development and delivery of diagnostic techniques and medical treatments. Genzyme manufactures and markets a range of innovative health care products and services in nearly ninety countries and across a broad spectrum of medical disciplines.

In addition to his many contributions to the biotechnology industry and health care field, Termeer is active in humanitarian assistance, policy issues, and improving access to medical treatment. He is a member of the board of directors of Project Hope, an international health education program that partners with Genzyme to provide life-saving treatment at no cost to patients in developing countries. He also serves on the boards of a number of medical organizations in Boston and elsewhere, is deputy chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston's board of directors, and is chairman emeritus of the New England Healthcare Institute, an applied-research health policy firm he helped to found.

He has actively promoted educational causes in the Boston area at all levels. In 2005, he was recognized by the Action Center for Educational Services and Scholarships for his commitment to providing educational opportunities to Boston's youth. The following year, Cambridge School Volunteers-which recruits and trains tutors and mentors for Cambridge's public schools-honored him for his role in securing Genzyme's support for its educational initiatives.

A native of the Netherlands, he studied economics at Rotterdam's Erasmus University and earned an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia. He holds fellowships at the Royal College of Physicians and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and in 2003 he received the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Humanitarian Award from the March of Dimes and the Cor Vitae Award from the American Heart Association.

We honor Henri Termeer for his visionary leadership of a dynamic and world-renowned medical technology firm, and for his commitment to improving health education and access to medical treatment both in the Commonwealth and abroad.

51 Sawubona! (I See You!)

A Song of Welcome Expressions of welcome from around the world are the lyrics of this song. The by David Patterson Zulu say Sawubona and the Wompanoag, who speak Massachusetts, say Aho. Professor of Music Failte is the Gaelic, Bienvenidos Spanish, Chao Mung Vietnamese, and Merhaba Arabic. Brookhim haba-eem, Hebrew, means "blessed are the coming." The Turkish Hash geldinez translates as "may you find comfort." A beautiful natural expression of Welcome comes from American Sign Language: an extended arm with open hand drawn toward the heart.

Sawubona was composed to celebrate the inauguration of Michael F. Collins, MD, as seventh chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston.

52 Honoring Our Graduates

Today all of us come together to celebrate the academic accomplishments of new alumni of UMass Boston. Today's pageantry acknowledges the efforts of each individual graduate, and each one of them will appreciate your help in making Commencement 2008 an enjoyable and memorable event. Please review this page to make yourself aware of important infor mation you will need, and ways you can contribute to the success of the day. We thank you for your cooperation.

· As the Graduates Enter and Leave ••• Please remain at your seats and avoid blocking the aisles. The main cere mony begins with an academic procession, signaled by a musical fanfare, and ends when graduates have marched out of the seating area on the Campus Center lawn. The three main aisles must remain free so that those in the procession can march in and out without delay.

Cell Phones and Other Intrusions The graduates request your undivided attention during today's ceremonies. Please turn off any potentially noisy electronic devices, such as cell phones, pagers, radios, and electronic games, and keep conversation to a minimum while the ceremonies are in progress. This coUrtesy will allow everyone in attendance to hear today's speakers.

Individual College Ceremonies Graduating students will be recognized individually at ceremonies for UMass Boston colleges that will be held after the main ceremony at various locations on campus. Please note that both graduate and undergraduate degree recipients, and their guests, are invited to attend the ceremonies for the colleges that house their academic programs. The locations of the ceremonies are given below and on the map provided on other side of this page. The ceremonies will begin at 1:00pm, to allow guests time to get something to eat and find their ceremony locations. To reach your ceremony, please follow the signs marked with the name of your graduate's college.

Photographs At the individual ceremonies, professionals will be photographing each student as the student crosses the stage. Your graduate will receive information by mail from the photographers about purchasing his or her photographs (no one will be obliged to do this). If you wish to take photographs yourself, please do so from your seat, so as not to block anyone's view. You will also be able to take photographs after the ceremonies.

To UMass Boston

We beheld, UMass Boston, a torch in your hand, Saw a crown on your brow, heard your voice of command That we follow the lead of your bold guiding light Toward knowledge and wisdom and fervor for right ... Toward knowledge and wisdom and fervor for right.

How that glow has burned bright through the passage of years As our dreams dispelled doubts and our hopes assuaged fears, As our eyes watched that gleam with conviction and trust, And we learned to place faith in the good and the just ... And we learned to place faith in the good and the just.

May that torch never dim as life beckons us forth May it shine like a jewel of fathomless worth. Like tall ships setting sail may we steer evermore By that beacon of beauty and truth on the shore ... By that beacon of beauty and truth on the shore.

The UMass Boston alma mater is to be sung to the melody of "The Meeting of the Waters," from a song by Thomas Moore (1779-1852) based on an old Irish air. The same melody was used for the alma mater of the State Teachers College at Boston, a predecessor of Boston State College, which became part of UMass Boston in 1982. The lyrics were adapted from those of a State Teachers College at Boston class song by a committee of the university's Faculty Council; the musical arrangement is by Professor Mary Oleskiewicz. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY,

Committed to access to excellence in teaching, research, and service, and distinguished by its diverse student population, the University of Massachusetts Boston offers the academic resources of a comprehensive university and the learning environment of a small private college. Nearly 30 university institutes and centers pursue research and public service in such areas as public policy; gerontology; media; labor; women in politics; African American, Latino, and Asian American issues; and environmental concerns.
