Secondary Codex Entries Secondary Codex Entries Spacer/Sole Survivor Both of your parents were in the Alliance military. Your childhood was spent on ships and stations as they transferred from posting to posting. Following in your parents' footsteps, you enlisted at the age of eighteen. One of your first missions was an expedition to investigate Akuze, a lush world on the outskirts of Alliance space that had suddenly dropped out of contact. Arriving on the surface, your patrol found the settlement intact, but there were no survivors. At nightfall, the thresher maws struck - mindless abominations of teeth and tentacles that rose from beneath the earth. Constant gunfire couldn't drown out the shrieks of your fellow soldiers as they were dragged down to a gruesome death. Fifty marines died on Akuze. You were the only one to make it back to the landing zone alive. A monument on the planet commemorates the massacre, a grim reminder of the price humanity must pay as they spread throughout the stars. Spacer/War Hero Born into a naval family, you spent your childhood on ships and stations. You moved from posting to posting as your parents were reassigned. You enlisted in the Alliance military yourself on the day you turned eighteen. You were on shore leave at Elysium when the first wave of the Skyllian Blitz struck. A massive coalition force of slavers, crime syndicates, and batarian warlords attacked the human colony, determined to wipe it out. You rallied the civilian inhabitants, leading them in their desperate fight to hold off the invaders. When enemy troops broke through the colony's defenses, you single-handedly held them off and sealed the breach. After hours of brutal fighting, reinforcements finally arrived and the enemy broke ranks and fled. Because of your actions, Elysium was saved, and you are regarded throughout the Alliance as a true hero. Spacer/Ruthless Born into a naval family, you spent your childhood on ships and stations. You moved from posting to posting as your parents were reassigned, and it was only natural you would follow in their footsteps by enlisting in the Alliance military when you came of age. After several years of service, you joined the campaign to rid the Skyllian Verge of batarian slavers and other criminal elements. The final battle came when Alliance forces laid siege to Torfan, a slaver base built miles below the surface of a desolate moon. The superiority of the human fleet was wasted in the assault on the underground bunker, but you led a corps of elite ground troops into the heart of the enemy base. Nearly three-quarters of your own squad perished in the vicious close-quarters fighting...a cost you were willing to pay to make sure not a single slaver made it out of Torfan alive. Colonist/Sole Survivor You were raised on Mindoir on the fringes of the Attican Traverse. When you were sixteen, the colony was raided by slavers. The entire settlement was razed and your friends and family were slaughtered. A passing Alliance patrol rescued you, but all you loved was destroyed. Asari The asari were the first species to discover the Citadel. When the salarians arrived, it was the asari who proposed the establishment of the Citadel Council to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. Since then, the asari have served as the mediators and centrists of the Council. An all-female race, the asari reproduce through a form of parthenogenesis. They can attune their nervous system to that of another individual of any gender, and of any species, to reproduce. This capability has led to unseemly and inaccurate rumors about asari promiscuity. Asari can live for over 1,000 years, passing through three stages of life. In the Maiden stage, they wander restlessly, seeking new knowledge and experience. When the Matron stage begins, they "meld" with interesting partners to produce their offspring. This ends when they reach the Matriarch stage, where they assume the roles of leaders and councilors. Salarians The second species to join the Citadel, the salarians are warm-blooded amphibians with a hyperactive metabolism.

  • The Burden of Queer Love
Press Start Burden of Queer Love The Burden of Queer Love Brianna Dym University of Colorado Boulder Abstract Video games are a unique narrative and interactive experience that allow players to construct their own fantasies through play. The fantastical possibilities a video game could explore are nearly limitless. However, a game’s design often precludes certain imaginative routes, shutting down one fantasy in favour of another. Games close out possibilities through actions as small as character design (gender, race, ability) and restrict imaginative interpretations to serve a narrow audience. Game developers design play that prioritizes hypermasculine narrative experiences, and players that do not align with this identity must condition themselves to play that excludes fantasies or alternate worlds that align with their experiences. This essay explores attempts by game development studio BioWare to create video games that are inclusive of gay, lesbian, and bisexual players by writing queer romantic narrative subplots into their games. While BioWare’s attempts are certainly not malicious, they fail time and time again, game after game, to break free of the hypermasculine and heterocentric culture dominant in the gaming industry. Instead, BioWare appropriates queer experiences and construes them as a burden to the player so as not to displace the fantasies of male, heterosexual gamers. • Certificate for Approving the Dissertation
MIAMI UNIVERSITY The Graduate School Certificate for Approving the Dissertation We hereby approve the Dissertation of Kevin J. Rutherford Candidate for the Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Director (Jason Palmeri) Reader (Michele Simmons) Reader (Heidi McKee) Reader (Kate Ronald) Graduate School Representative (Bo Brinkman) ABSTRACT PACK YOUR THINGS AND GO: BRINGING OBJECTS TO THE FORE IN RHETORIC AND COMPOSITION by Kevin J. Rutherford This dissertation project focuses on object-oriented rhetoric (OOR), a perspective that questions the traditional notions of rhetorical action as solely a human province. The project makes three major, interrelated claims: that OOR provides a unique and productive methodology to examine the inclusion of the non-human in rhetorical study; that to some extent, rhetoric has always been interested in the way nonhuman objects interact with humans; and that these claims have profound implications for our activities as teachers and scholars. Chapter one situates OOR within current scholarship in composition and rhetoric, arguing that it can serve as a useful methodology for the field despite rhetoric’s traditional focus on epistemology and human symbolic action. Chapter two examines rhetorical history to demonstrate that a view of rhetoric that includes nonhuman actors is not new, but has often been marginalized. Chapter three examines two videogames as sites of theory and practice for object-oriented rhetoric, specifically focusing on a sense of metaphor to understand the experience of nonhuman rhetors. Chapter four interrogates the network surrounding a review aggregation website to argue that, while some nonhumans may be unhelpful rhetorical collaborators, OOR can assist us in improving relationships with them.

  • Mass Effect! Action! Drama! War! Romance!
Story: In the year 2148, explorers on Mars discovered the remains of an ancient spacefaring civilization. In the decades that followed, these mysterious artifacts revealed startling new technologies, enabling travel to the furthest stars. The basis for this incredible technology was a force that controlled the very fabric of space and time. They called it the greatest discovery in human history. The civilizations of the galaxy call it... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Intro: Element Zero! You're going to be hearing that term (or eezo) a lot from now on. It'll be used to justify faster-than-light travel, energy shields, even glowy space psychic people. Why? Because you get to spend the next 10 years in the sci-fi adventure setting of Mass Effect! Action! Drama! War! Romance! You will begin your adventure in the year 2181. For the record, the first Mass Effect takes place in 2183, Mass Effect 2 takes place in 2185, and Mass Effect 3 kicks off in 2186. You get a few years to get yourself ready for the impending Reaper (sentient starship) invasion. You might even be able to stop it yourself. Remember, you probably know information (or can learn it by just reading the Jump) that could save a lot of lives if you can get people to believe you. Cerberus' (human supremacist organization headed by the Illusive Man) antics, the Collectors, all of that information could be resolved with less fuss if you can get the word out to the right people. You'll have to survive though. Good luck with that! Go join up with Shepard, take things into your own hands, or use your information to change the galaxy.

My use of transcode, a term introduced by the semiotician A.J. Greimas and carried into the digital realm by Lev Manovich, refers to how cultural elements such as assumptions, biases, priorities emerge within programming code and software. It demonstrates how cultural norms persist across different mediums and posits that, in many ways, the capacity to be flexible defines cultural ideologies. At the software level, programming languages work like performative speech: grammar which produces effects. When cast as speech, coming from a body (or bodies) instead of hardware, information structures can be perceived as acting within regimes of corporeality; when cast as software, information structures demonstrate and advertise the capabilities of hardware. Although often aligned with veracity and stability in its proximity to (computer) science, software is not culturally neutral.

  • Chapter 1- Priority: Dholen (Haestrom's Sun) So Here She Was
WHISPERING SHADOWS- A MASS EFFECT 3 ALTERNATE ENDING - 1 Chapter 1- Priority: Dholen (Haestrom’s Sun) So here she was. Back on the Normandy. She couldn’t say she was surprised, by what she’d seen at Sanctuary. She’d known the Illusive Man had no problem sacrificing other people for his vaguely-stated goals. And she knew that scamming refugees was a traditional way to make money in wartime. Still, Sanctuary had been coldblooded even by those standards. She’d seen people in the Citadel markets, selling everything they had so they could afford to send their families to Sanctuary. And now the whole lot of them were husks. ...The Illusive Man probably thought it proved how serious and committed he was to saving humanity, that he’d go to such extreme, pointless lengths to save it. Shepard chuckled darkly. She had to wonder what he was saving it from. Hackett wanted to talk to her, ASAP, apparently. She splashed water on her face, wishing that would be enough to wash away the sickness-and-ammonia stench of Sanctuary. Not that Hackett would notice: He’d be a hologram with no sense of smell. She leaned on the metal sink, allowing herself a moment to look in the mirror. Not much of the old Shepard left there, she thought. When the Illusive Man had resurrected her as his errand-girl, he’d made her look the same as she had before she died. She’d hated that. It was a lie, that you could work for Cerberus and not change.

  • Mass Effect: Andromeda V1.16 By: Ovid Different Galaxy, Same
Mass Effect: Andromeda v1.16 By: Ovid Different Galaxy, Same Problems Hello Jumper, welcome to Mass Effect! Specifically, the Heleus Cluster located within the Andromeda Galaxy. I hope you are ready to fight to survive. The place looked great for a colonization effort by the species of the Milky Way 600 years ago. But between then and now, things have changed. Mysterious structures have popped up on the selected colonization candidates, and now those planets are barely inhabitable at best. In addition, there’s this nasty stuff preventing convenient space travel called the Scourge, which is best characterized as space fog that will screw up anything that gets too close to it. Ships, planets, etc. Good news though! You aren’t going in empty handed. Have 1000 Choice Points, and make them count. (In the interests of not breaking immersion, there is additional information on the setting and perks/items/drawbacks at the end of the document.) The year is 2819 CE. The Arks are scheduled to arrive now, and they are expecting the Nexus, which showed up a year earlier, to be set up and waiting for them. But, the conditions have changed over the last 634 years. But enough of that! What Race are you? Roll 1d7. ...Congratulations, that’s your lucky number! All joking aside, pick your race for free. Human: Back in the Milky Way, Humanity was the latest race to join the Citadel Council after a staggeringly short waiting period. You know a human will continue to push the boundaries of what can and can’t be done, so it makes sense that the Andromeda Initiative was originally founded by a human.

The unnamed space station he used as his base was orbiting a red giant-class M star. The semispherical edge of the burning sun filled the entire lower half of the viewing window, its brightness dominating but not completely obscuring the field of stars behind it. The star was in the last stages of its six-billion-year life span. As the grand final act culminating its exis- tence, it would collapse in upon itself, creating a black hole to swallow the entire system. The planets and moons it had spawned in its birth would be de- voured in the inescapable gravitational pull of the dark, gaping maw left behind by its death. The scene encapsulated everything the Illusive Man believed about the galaxy: it was beautiful, glorious and deadly. Life could spring up in the least likely of places in the most unimaginable of forms, only to be snuffed out in a blink of the cosmic eye. He wasn’t about to let that happen to humanity. “Viewing window off,” he said, and the wall Karp_9780345520722_5p_all_r1.qxp 6/1/10 11:14 AM Page 2 2 Drew Karpyshyn became opaque, leaving him alone in a large, dimly lit room. “Lights on,” he said, and illumination spilled from the ceiling.

  • Rhetoric of Mass Effect 2 Submitted by Rebekah
Thesis Hidden Options and Player Pushback: Rhetoric of Mass Effect 2 Submitted by Rebekah Robson-May Department of English In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2011 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Sarah Jane Sloane Carrie Lamanna Jennifer Cross Copyright by Rebekah Robson-May, 2011 All Rights Reserved Abstract Hidden Options and Player Pushback: Rhetoric of Mass Effect 2 This thesis is an exploration of gender construction within the digital gaming subculture of the United States in the early 21st century. Using the 2010 game Mass Effect 2 as an organizing theme and central focus, the thesis examines how gender is constructed within this single-player role-playing game; how marketing materials reveal expectations about audience for this game and two other single-player role- playing games released in 2010 (Fable III and Final Fantasy XIII); and how online communities related to games, particularly to Mass Effect 2, both reinforce normative assumptions and attitudes about gender for players of digital games and characters within the games, and how they offer opportunities for the subversion and disruption of these normative models. Theories from Judith Butler and from Candace West and Don Zimmerman provide the primary basis for exploring gender construction. To examine the effects of digital games on literacy and learning, James Paul Gee’s work is used extensively. Additional discussion utilizes online fan and gamer posts. Insights about games, their marketing, and the broader community are drawn from a number of perspectives, in- cluding autoethnography, visual rhetoric, the principles of interpreting visual art, and a study of theatrical costume design.
