  • Lancashire (Blackburn)
LANCASHIRE Lancashire is a large county in north-west of England, bordered by the sea to the west. The counties of Cumberland and Westmorland lie to the north, the West Riding of Yorkshire to the east, and Cheshire to the south. In the nineteenth century the county was transformed. It began as a mainly agricultural region but became an area with many large urban regions and a variety of industrial occupations. This transformation led to frequent changes in the administrative structure, both in the county-at- large and in the towns and cities. Because of the complex and changing structure, the information about weights and scales is presented here in six sections. The sections correspond geographically to the six ancient hundreds of the county, as shown in the map above. (The hundred of Lonsdale was divided naturally into two parts, North and South ‘of the Sands’, but it was administered as one unit.) It must be stressed that, although the administration of the county was based on these geographical areas, the individual hundreds did not have independent jurisdiction. 1 The hundred of BLACKBURN in Lancashire The hundred of Blackburn lies in the east of the county of Lancashire and is bordered partly by the West Riding of Yorkshire. In 1826 the county received two sets of standards for use in the Higher and Lower Divisions of the hundred. The same divisions continued after 1846, when the police force began to take over the inspection of weights and measures. An additional division, Bacup and Rawtenstall, was formed in 1861. There was a further reorganisation in 1878, after which there were four divisions: Higher, Lower, Haslingden, and Rossendale.

GCSE examinations continue until Wednesday 22nd June; Y5 pupils join us for taster sessions; we have Coffee Mornings for prospective parents and carers; Y9 and Y10 core exam week; Y11 Prom; Awards Evening at the Town Hall for students in Years 7 to 10. In July we look forward to meeting our incoming Y7 pupils and fami- lies on Y6 Welcome Day and Y6 Welcome Evening; SLT Futures Conference; Sports Day and Rossendale Ath- letics (let’s hope for good weather!); our Summer Show and finally Commendation Assemblies. There are so many opportunities to celebrate the successes of our young people and to promote the high standards we expect of everyone. Over the May half term, many teaching colleagues are giving their time to provide revision sessions for Y11 students in the GCSE subjects whose examinations are still to come, and I would like to thank staff for their fantastic commitment, not only in the forthcoming holiday but before and after school and at lunchtimes. Our students are offered a huge amount of high quality examination support and need to use this as the basis for their own independent revision over the coming weeks. Can I remind everyone that all students must arrive at every lesson and at tutor time with the correct equipment, and that students must maintain the highest standards of appearance – full school uniform worn correctly, including skirts of the appropriate length.

  • Lancashire: a Chronology of Flash Flooding
LANCASHIRE: A CHRONOLOGY OF FLASH FLOODING Introduction The past focus on the history of flooding has been mainly with respect to flooding from the overflow of rivers and with respect to the peak level that these floods have achieved. The Chronology of British Hydrological Events provides a reasonably comprehensive record of such events throughout Great Britain. Over the last 60 years the river gauging network provides a detailed record of the occurrence of river flows and peak levels and flows are summaried in HiflowsUK. However there has been recent recognition that much flooding of property occurs from surface water flooding, often far from rivers. Locally intense rainfall causes severe flooding of property and land as water concentrates and finds pathways along roads and depressions in the landscape. In addition, intense rainfall can also cause rapid rise in level and discharge in rivers causing a danger to the public even though the associated peak level is not critical. In extreme cases rapid rise in river level may be manifested as a ‘wall of water’ with near instantaneous rise in level of a metre or more. Such events are usually convective and may be accompanied by destructive hail or cause severe erosion of hillsides and agricultural land. There have been no previous compilations of historical records of such ‘flash floods’or even of more recent occurrences. It is therefore difficult to judge whether a recent event is unusual or even unique in terms of the level reached at a particular location or more broadly of regional severity. This chronology of flash floods is provided in order to enable comparisons to be made between recent and historical floods, to judge rarity and from a practical point of view to assess the adequacy of urban drainage networks.

The Rossendale 60’s Festival 7th, 8th and 9th September 2018 www.rossendale60sfest.wordpress.com The Rossendale 60’s Festival – The Story So far The Rossendale 60’s Festival is now in its 6th year and has established itself as the premier valley-wide event in Rossendale. Its current Chair Barry Hyde founded the Festival in 2013 as an initiative that would provide a theme that both businesses and the community would buy into. It was seen as a Festival that supported a number of individual events that adopted the 60’s theme but the interpretation was left to each event organising group. The first year did attract a number of groups and businesses, and was seen to have great potential going forward. Pete Sweetmore Joined Barry in 2014 to provide further capacity to discuss and engage with businesses and community groups with a view to developing further events and express the opportunities for all to benefit. The Festival Organising Group now a constituted group of members that coordinates and promotes the Festival and has succeeded in developing the Festival to where it is now. The organisers have always seen the Rossendale 60’s Festival as distinctive in a number of ways. • It has always encouraged the Rossendale community and businesses to get involved and engage with the festival and benefit from all of the opportunities presented to them as a consequence of the success of the Festival • From its conception, the Festival has always been envisaged as a Valley Wide event, encompassing all that is synonymous with the 60’s era • Putting
