INTRODUCTION Papers of John C. Schuder, an officer of the Columbia, Missouri, Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation and member of the Anti-War Moratorium Committee. The Schuder Papers consist of correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs, and miscellaneous material.

DONOR INFORMATION The John C. Schuder Papers were donated to the by John C. Schuder on February 17, 1993 (Accession No. 5262).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH John Claude Schuder was born on March 1, 1922, in Olney, Illinois. He received a B.S. from the University of Illinois in 1943, an M.S. from Purdue University in 1951, and a Ph.D. from Purdue University in Electrical Engineering in 1954. He worked as a Junior Engineering Research Laboratory Assistant for Westinghouse Corporation from 1943 to 1944, and was a radio operator on merchant ships from 1944 to 1946. He was self-employed from 1946 to 1949. Schuder was an Instructor in Electrical Engineering at Purdue University from 1949 to 1954, and Associate Professor from 1954 to 1956. He taught Physics at Doane College from 1956 to 1957. Schuder was a Fellow of Surgical Research from 1957 to 1959 and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering in Surgical Research from 1959 to 1960 at the Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In 1960 Schuder joined the faculty at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in Columbia as an Associate Professor of Biophysics in Surgery. He was promoted to Professor in 1964. His research specialties involved the application of physical science to problems of medi- cine, artificial internal organ research, biophysics, and biomedical engineering. Schuder became involved in the Fellowship of Reconciliation and the Anti-War Moratorium Committee during 1964. He had a personal conviction that war was contrary to moral and ethical views.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The John C. Schuder Papers consist of correspondence, speeches, newspaper clippings, photographs, and other ephemera accumulated during Schuder's tenure as an officer of the Columbia, Missouri, Chapter of the Fellowship of Reconciliation and member of the Anti-War Moratorium Committee. The papers are arranged into six series: Schuder Speeches, Newspaper Clippings and Magazine Articles, Organizations, Miscellaneous Papers, Political Campaigns, and Photographs. The Schuder Speeches series is comprised of speeches from October 1965 to May 1967 arranged chronologically. Included are speeches Schuder made to the Students for a Democratic Society, and the Columbia Chapter Ministerial Alliance, Missouri School of Religion. from 1964 through 1975. Most newspaper articles are from local papers, particularly the Columbia Tribune and the University of Missouri-Columbia student newspaper, the Maneater. They primarily reflect local events, but articles of national importance are also included. The magazine articles date from 1966 through 1972. Articles are from Newsweek, Time, Saturday Review, and other periodicals. The series is arranged chronologically. The Organizations series consists of records relating to a variety of organizations concerned with the Vietnam conflict. The Vote to End the Draft folder contains correspondence, press releases and newsletters related to local and national efforts to end the draft. Also included in the Vote to End the Draft folder are letters from Richard H. Ichord, Congressman from the 8th District of Missouri; Thomas F. Eagleton, U.S. Senator from Missouri; Stuart Symington, U.S. Senator from Missouri; L. Mendel Rivers, Chairman, Committee on Armed Services and U.S. Representative from South Carolina; and Mark O. Hatfield, U.S. Senator from Oregon. The Vietnam War Moratorium Committee folders contain papers relating to the March on Washington in the Fall of 1969 and a conflict with KOMU-TV 8, correspondence, newsletters, and miscellaneous materials. The Missouri Peace Study Institute folder contains the by-laws and mission statement of the organization. The institute was a group established in Mid-Missouri during the 1960s and dedicated to furthering everlasting peace. The New Mobilization Committee to End the War folders contain newsletters, handbills, and miscellaneous items related to the committee's mission to bring a peaceful resolution to the war in Vietnam. The Students for a Democratic Society folder contains miscellaneous correspondence related to the group’s activities to bring an end to the war in Vietnam. The Student Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam folder contains correspondence and newsletters. The Pact folder contains news releases concerning Barry Bassin, Russ Goddard and Gene Keyes who resisted the draft and were subsequently prosecuted. The Fort Hood Three folder contains flyers pertaining to PFC James Johnson, Pvt. Dennis Mora, and Pvt. David Samas, three American solders who were court martialed and sentenced to prison terms for refusing active service in Vietnam. SANE was a national committee for a sane nuclear policy, and its folder contains newsletters and flyers. The Fellowship of Reconciliation was a group of clergy and laymen concerned about Vietnam and its folder contains newsletters and meeting notices. The Business Executives Move for Vietnam Peace folder contains brochures and newsletters. The American Friends Service Committee folder contains newsletters and flyers. The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom folder contains flyers. These records are not complete and do not give a good picture of the day-to-day activities of these organizations. The Miscellaneous series contains newsletters, sermons, and other material. The Columbia Free Press folder contains three issues of this newsletter--May 10, 1966, May 26, 1966, and April 1967. This was a publication dedicated to issues of importance to University of Missouri-Columbia students. The Columbia Peace Newsletter folder contains three newsletters dated December 1967, March 1968, and May 1968. The purpose of this newsletter was to share with concerned Columbians information and views on peace and world order. The Repeal the Draft folder contains flyers and two newsletters from 1970. The Maurice Glynn Burke folder contains miscellaneous materials related to a minister at the First Christian Church in Columbia, Missouri during the 1960s. He gave sermons and wrote materials related to the war in Vietnam. Materials are arranged chronologically within the folders. The Political Campaigns series is arranged alphabetically by politician’s name and consists of press releases, correspondence, position statements, other campaign literature, and C3915 Schuder, John C. endorsements. Politicians included are: Kenneth McQuitty, a candidate for the 8th Missouri District of the United States Congress in 1966; H. Clyde Wilson, a candidate for the Missouri Senate in 1970; Eugene McCarthy, a Senator from Minnesota and presidential candidate in 1968; and George McGovern, a Senator from South Dakota and candidate for president in 1972. The Photographs series is arranged according to location where possible. The majority of photographs depict events associated with peaceful protests against the war in Vietnam which occurred on the University of Missouri-Columbia campus or in Washington, DC.
