in The Week • Thursday 31st July 2014 19 New DVD chronicles life in Somerset A new DVD about the history and heritage of Somerset tells the story of Keynsham's involvement in the Pitchfork Rebellion in 1685. Written and narrated by Glastonbury based historian Henry Buckton, the film is the first in a series planned for production under the banner 'Discovering Somerset.' Volume 1 tells the story of the Duke of Monmouth's failed attempt to seize the throne from his uncle King James II. Having amassed an army of some 9000, mostly agricultural workers in Somerset and Dorset (hence the 'Pitchfork Rebellion') he was heading for Bristol where he planned to swell his army with more sympathisers. The troops reached the strategic crossing point of the River Avon, at the White Hart Inn - now the Lock Keeper - on 25th June 1685. But here they were attacked and dispersed by the King's cavalry. Keynsham proved to be the high water mark of Monmouth's Rebellion which was finally quashed when the remaining troops were slaughtered on the Somerset Levels. The DVD also includes other local points of interest including the Stanton Drew stone circles, Cheddar Gorge and Chew Lakes. Industries cover everything from mining to brewing at Butcombe as well as the tourist attractions of Bath, Clevedon and Weston-super-Mare. Discovering Somerset Vol.1 is produced by local company 1st Take and can be ordered by calling 01454 321614.

in The Week • Thursday 31st July 2014 29 COMMUNITY PUB OF THE YEAR 2014

LKeeperaunched by local MP of Chris Skidmore, tradition the Kingswood Community Pub of the Year Award seeks to celebrate the important role pubs play. This week we visit the Lock Keeper on Keynsham Road. Although the pub is right on the edge of Keynsham, it does in fact fall within South Gloucestershire and is part of the Kingswood constituency

For the last 10 years, the landmark Lock Keeper pub on the Keynsham Road has been managed by Samir Hadzigrahic and his wife Azenora. Samir at the bar Samir, who ran a hotel in Oxford before taking over the reins at the Lock Keeper, strives for the very best of everything at his And that undoubtedly pays off, with the pub consistently pub. “I expect 150 % from all the staff,” he says. winning awards. It is part of Young’s, which has pubs across the South West, London, the South East and Home Counties. Currently the Lock Keeper holds the Team of the Year; last year it won Young’s Customer Service Pub of the Year Award. Being on the border of two counties, the Lock Keeper, which can trace its history back hundreds of years (and was originally called the White Hart) draws customers from a wide area. Right by the river, it has a large beer garden and raised deck, is family and dog friendly and has a great reputation for food. The stylish conservatory is very popular with diners and there are also lovely snug rooms in which to relax. The emphasis at the Lock Keeper is on the best of British and locally sourced and seasonal food, with daily chef’s specials. The pub’s popularity is evident from the sheer number of customers who come each week. Sundays at the pub are incredibly busy when Samir says the kitchen can be dealing with 250 tickets, with up to three meals on each ticket. The pub also has a wide range of cask and bottled beers and a large selection of wines. Community orientated, the Lock Keeper holds an annual charity festival, quirkily named Lock Stock. This year it takes place on 17th August and is in aid of Mencap. A great family day out is promised, with live music, a barbecue, bouncy castle, face painting and raffles. The pub also has its very own petanque pitch and plays host to the Brunel League.

Next week we look at another pub on the shortlist
